REDDING – The Shasta County Sheriff’s office and the local police, such as Redding PD, have been using a program called “Shasta’s Most Wanted” to corral some of the criminals who have been convicted or accepted a plea, and yet failed to show up for their sentencing. This program was launched last year, and involves distributing mugshots of those who are due to serve their sentence. A $250 reward is offered to people who can provide a tip on locating the wanted man or woman, who are sometimes even captured at their home. People with tips on anyone on the Most Wanted list can call SHASCOM at 530-245-6540, or the Secret Witness of Shasta County at 530-243-2319, or via their website at www.scsecretwitness.com/tip/htm.

The success rate has typically been about 70 percent captured, some on the same day or within a couple of days of the media release of the names and photos. The capture of the landmark 100th Most Wanted Criminal was not so easy however.

Happier times – Mike McCarley in a Facebook image

40-year-old Michael Edward McCarley appeared on the Most Wanted list in September of 2013. He had been charged with burglary and convicted, yet failed to appear for sentencing. After five months, he was finally located in Redding near the intersection of Hamilton Street and Freebridge Street. He was re-booked and will face sentencing once again, and face additional charges for failure to appear.

McCarley had a difficult year in 2012. It was reported that he had been struggling with drug addiction and seeking rehab assistance. He apparently began a program and had some success, however. He even posted a Facebook message in May saying “I havent done any drugs for thirty days people Im starting to get fat again. lol.”

His struggles, however, continued and by the end of July he was arrested for robbery, theft and brandishing a knife. He had stolen merchandise from Sportsman’s Warehouse on Hilltop Drive, and when someone tried to stop him, he then pulled a knife. He fled, but witnesses followed, and he was detained by deputies from Lassen County who happened to be at Logan’s Roadhouse restaurant. A comment on the story on KRCR by his ex-wife detailed his struggles to get help for his substance abuse issues.

Pennsylvania meth dealer goes nuts in Santa Rosa

A man who has been in plenty of trouble in his home in Limerick, Montgomery County Pennsylvania for being involved in a methamphetamine distribution ring apparently got high and went nuts on the freeway in Santa Rosa.

At about 8:20 this morning, Sonoma County Sheriff’s Detectives were traveling along the Old Redwood Highway just past the Mendocino Avenue onramp to the 101, when they noticed several cars stopped on the freeway. According to a Sheriff’s press release, they saw a man there who appeared to be trying to get into at least 3 cars among those that had stopped when they saw him walking on the freeway. Detective Sergeant Michael Raasch and Detective Ryan Russell immediately left their car, jumping the six foot fence to intervene. Meanwhile, Detective Sean Jones drove the car around to get onto the freeway.

The man they were after, 37-year-old Troy David Dudas, appeared to be “extremely high” on drugs, and they attempted to apprehend him. After a struggle, they managed to handcuff him. More police units arrived on the scene, and Dudas became more violent, frothing at the mouth and speaking gibberish. They placed him in the maximum restraints available, and summoned an ambulance. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation prior to booking.

Cars line up at Starbucks on the right, the freeway where Dudas entered is on the left.

Cars line up at Starbucks on the right, the freeway where Dudas entered is on the left.

As the detectives pieced together the incident, they learned that he started near the Starbucks just adjacent to the west side of the Freeway, at Hopper and Cleveland. He had been walking through traffic, at one point jumping on the hood of a car, before climbing over the fence onto the freeway. It was then that he began stopping cars and trying to get in.

In 2012, Dudas had been arrested in Pennsylvania for his involvement with a huge meth trafficking ring. He had pleaded guilty to charges of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine, dealing in unlawful proceeds , and conspiracy. He was said to be one of the main suppliers bringing meth from Philadelphia to Montgomery County, and was due to be sentenced to at least 5 to 7 years prison time. Reports from May 2013 said he was in jail, still waiting on his final sentencing. It is not clear at this time how he ended up in California, and whether he was released on bail pending sentence, or if he was out on probation.

The Sheriff’s office continues their investigation, and is seeking to contact three victims of his attempted carjacking. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Deputy Tom Howard at 707-565-2650.

West Sacramento Bee Hive Rustler Convicted

$

There were no honeyed words in the verdict handed down by a Yolo County jury February 27 convicting Viktor Zhdamirov, 51, of West Sacramento for stealing bee hives worth $65,000.

Back on September 11, 2012, employees at a Tauzer Apiaries, a Woodland commercial beekeeping facility, discovered two separate bee hive stockpiles had been ransacked with parts of approximately 80 hives removed. With more than 40 years experience as beekeepers, the Tauzer employees were quickly able to discover the thefts. When a queen is removed from a hive, the bees remaining in that hive act in a predictable and recognizable manner.

Yolo County Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Raven stated “The stolen hives were distinctively marked inside and out so that Tauzer and his employees did their own hunting and investigating into the theft.” They found dozens of hive lids strewn along Jefferson Boulevard in a rural area south of West Sacramento near Clarksburg. Empty buckets of green paint were mixed in with the chaotic collection of hive lids scattered by the side of the road. After further investigation, the Tauzer employees found the stolen hives among hives owned by Zhdamirov at his own beekeeping facility near the Sacramento River.

The stolen hives were partially painted green. But Tauzer employees recognized their company brand on them despite attempts to paint and putty them over, reported Raven. However, even though Tauzer recovered the stolen hives, severe damage was done.

Yolo Sheriff Deputy Don Harmon contacted Zhdamirov, who admitted he’d stolen the Tauzer bee hives, and tried to cover up the theft. Zhdamirov was convicted of a felony for receiving stolen goods and faces up to three years imprisonment. Also he will be required to reimburse the $65,000 in damage to Tauzer’s hives.

Convicted for an unlawful sexual relationship with a minor, Troy Hensley, 38, who had, in addition to his coaching duties, mingled with young people as a supervisor at a popular Dixon eatery, was sentenced on February 26 to four years of felony probation and a year in the county jail.

Hensley pleaded no contest to one felony count of digital penetration and two felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. His trial and sentencing took place in Yolo county because Hensley was arrested in Davis.

Prior to sentencing in Yolo Superior Judge David Rosenberg’s courtroom, victims delivered impact statements. In addition to the minor, who was later identified as now 19-year-old Katie Jacobs, her mother, father, and stepfather rose to tell their stories while holding back tears, according to a Woodland Daily Democrat account. Jacobs gave an interview to CBS Sacramento regarding the ordeal.

Hensley began the relationship with Jacobs in September 2011. Hensley was, at the time, both a coach and supervisor at Bud’s Pub and Grill in downtown Dixon, according to the Woodland Daily Democrat. At that time, Jacobs was 17. In her victim impact statement, she said Hensley made threats that he would kill her, her family, and his family if she told anyone about the relationship.

“I felt completely trapped, there was no way out of this relationship,” Jacobs said in court. “He took my innocence away.”

Hensley’s wife stated in court that Hensley is “a very good father; he is involved in everything they do.”

After all concerned had their say, Judge David Rosenberg announced the sentence saying, “This is not a simple case. This is not a simple sentence.” Along with serving his probation and jail time, Hensley is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. Also, he will not be allowed to coach during his probation. He will have to pay an as yet unspecified amount of restitution to Jacobs and her family.

Santa Barbara - One of Santa Barbara’s leading tourist attractions is The Double Dolphin, a 50-foot catamaran renowned for whale watching excursions, dinner cruises, and coastal party adventures.  The vessel is surely one of the most recognizable boats in the region, which may qualify the events of March 3rd for a prominent ranking in the annual “what was he thinking?” competition.

It was on that date that officers of the Santa Barbara Harbor patrol responded to an emergency call reporting The Double Dolphin making its way—apparently without the benefit of anyone at the helm—into the harbor’s main channel and approaching the open ocean.

Harbor Patrol officers, according to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Riley Harwood, were promptly on board, where they discovered Phillip Everett Conway, 21.  Harbor Patrol Officer Karl Halamicek made contact with Conway, who admitted to having untied the boat from its dockside moorings and to having vandalized property on board.  Among the items that had apparently been tampered with were lifejackets, lifeboats, and assorted pieces of equipment and personal property.  Halamicek commented that “the boat was pretty much in disarray,” and that pursuant to subsequent inspection by the boat’s owner damages were in the range of $1,000 to $3,000.

As The Double Dolphin was recovered and motored back to its safe mooring, Conway was taken into custody and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where he was booked on charges of felony grand theft of a vessel and felony vandalism, with his bail set at $500,000.

A 33-year-old Costa Mesa man has been arrested for allegedly selling pot-laced brownies to minors, according to Costa Mesa police.

Officers launched an investigation two months ago when several high school students got sick after eating the brownies. Some of those students were arrested, and police began searching for the person who distributed the baked goods.

They learned the brownies were being sold by a drug dealer named “Clever,” who had a business card with that name which he would pass out to students. Investigators ultimately learned that “Clever” was Isaac Greer, an admitted gang member, according to reports.

Detectives tracked down Greer and found 50 pounds of marijuana, boxes of brownie mix, scales and business cards in his car and hotel room.

Greer was booked into the Orange County jail on charges of marijuana sales and transportation, sales of a controlled substance to a minor, child endangerment, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Carpinteria - Okay, we all know the traffic sucks.  We know that U.S. 101 passing through southern Santa Barbara County is in desperate need of widening and maintenance.  We also know that possession of a driver’s license is no guarantee of even a minimal IQ score.

But what we don’t know is just how unpredictable some of our fellow IQ-challenged motorists on the road can be.  That reality was made manifest just after the noon hour of March 4th when, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Jonathan Gutierrez, a conflict between drivers in moving vehicles broke out pursuant to a tailgating episode in southbound lanes running through the community of Montecito.

As a pickup truck driven by Ryan Luna, 25, pulled up behind another pickup truck driven by Joseph Antonucci, 56, and Antonucci failed to change lanes to allow Luna to pass, Luna eventually pulled alongside the older man and engaged him in a verbal exchange.

According to Gutierrez, “what began as verbal banter between the two escalated as the vehicles neared Santa Claus Lane” to the point that Luna “threw a super-sized soda into the passenger window of the other truck”.  Antonucci was struck in the face by the flying soda cup, with its contents splashing throughout his truck cab.

It was at that point that Anatonucci—perhaps not liking the flavor of the hurled beverage—summarily swerved violently to the right, crashing into Luna’s truck.  Antonucci then continued on his way while Luna was forced to exit at Carpinteria Avenue’s offramp.

As luck so often has it in such unpredictable moments, both vehicles were being followed at the time of the incident by an unmarked CHP patrol car driven by CHP Coastal Division Chief Reggie Chappelle, who immediately interpreted the situation as one in violation of any number of motor vehicle and criminal codes, and pulled Antonucci’s truck over in a red-lights-and-sirens traffic stop.

Pursuant to an investigation conducted at the scene, both drivers were taken into custody and arrested.  Antonucci was charged with vehicular assault with a deadly weapon and transported to Ventura County Jail with his bail set at $30,000, while Luna was charged with battery and a raft of vehicle code violations, with his bail set at $5,000.

Burbank man in Lake County worried about attack from Meth users

MIDDLETOWN – LAKE COUNTY – A man detained by Sheriff’s Deputies was carrying illegal weapons, and told them he was carrying them for “personal protection from the methamphetamine users.”

Steve Brooks of the Lake County Sheriff’s department said in a press release that last Wednesday, March 5 at 10:30 in the evening, deputies were investigating a case in the Middletown area, a small community of less than 1500 people in the southern area of Lake County. It was historically known as the halfway stop between Lower Lake and Calistoga, thus “Middle Town”. The deputies were seeking a man who was reported to be involved in a domestic disturbance, who was said to be at Hardester’s Market and Hardware store. They had no physical description of the individual they were looking for, however.

Deputies encountered Chang at Hardester's Market.

Deputies encountered Chang at Hardester’s Market.

When they arrived, they found a man in the parking lot, and approached to ask him some questions to determine if he was the subject they were looking for. As they approached the man, identified as 57-year-old Burbank resident Geoffrey Robert Chang, he was seen to reach into his right cargo pocket in his pants. The deputy asked him to take his hands out of his pockets, and he complied. Chang was asked if the deputies could conduct a search of him, and he said it was OK, but informed them that he was carrying a knife in his belt.

Chang was armed with a sap and automatic pistol.

Chang was armed with a sap and automatic pistol.

The search revealed more than that, however, as the deputies located in his pocket a black leather “sap” – a lead filled club used as a weapon like a billy club. Possession of such a weapon  is a felony, and it was seized as evidence as they continued the search and began to arrest Chang.

He asked if he could call a friend to come and retrieve his 2 dogs, which were in his car along with some other items. She soon arrived to take the dogs, but could not herself get into his car without help, which a deputy was happy to provide. When the door was opened, the deputy saw a semi automatic pistol inside, which was placed between the seat and door. It was seized as well, and the charge of carrying a loaded weapon was added to Chang’s charges.
