Thirty-Six Fugitives Making a Run for the Border Land in Jail

IMPERIAL VALLEY –  A joint agency operation targeting high-risk, violent felons, seeking more than 102 criminals in Imperial County Wednesday netted 36 wanted fugitives in an arrest sweep.

On Wednesday, February 26, Operation Imperial Valley Heat, a joint task force of the US Marshal’s service that also enlisted Federal Bureau of Investigations, Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Bureau, Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security, California Highway Patrol, Border Patrol, Imperial County Probation, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, Brawley Police, El Centro Police, Imperial Police, and Calexico Police departments made multiple arrests.

Focusing on high-risk violent felons, the team worked to arrest some of the most dangerous criminals on the streets. These sweep included those wanted for sex crimes, gang affiliation, armed robbery, and homicide. “Many felons travel into the area on their way to Mexico, and high-risk felons are more likely to continue their criminal activity in the community,” said Deputy U.S. Marshal Keara Villareal.

Operation Imperial Valley Heat was no small feat. It took more than two months to coordinate the efforts and 86 law enforcement officers involved. The arrest sweep had the goal of making the Imperial Valley a safer place for citizens. While only about a third of the criminals sought were arrested, the team felt the operation was a success. Some of those who weren’t arrested had likely already fled the area. Villareal noted that wanted fugitives are challenging to locate as they are likely to move from place to place in order to avoid law enforcement.

According to the U.S Marshals office, the organization serves more warrants than all the federal agencies combined. They also arrest more than half of all federal fugitives. Citizens interested in the US Marshals top fugitives and major cases can visit www.usmarshals.gov for more information.

Much-Delayed Redlands Murder Trial Set For March 17

SAN BERNARDINO – Three men accused for a January 2011 shooting that took two teen-agers’ lives has been delayed.

On Monday, a tentative trial date of March 17 will open the case against three men – Anthony Legaspi, 20, Jose Ramon Lara, 30, and John David Salazar, 24 – who are accused of a shooting that killed Quinn McCaleb and Andrew Jackson, both 17.
It took months for investigators to find enough evidence to arrest the three, each of whom pleaded not guilty in March 2013. Legaspi has been identified by investigators as the shooter while the other two accused of participating.

Legaspi, who was a juvenile at the time, and Salazar will be on trial for first-degree murder with special allegations. Lara was charged with being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Legaspi will be tried as an adult.

Police said McCaleb, Jackson and three other teens had assembled at an apartment complex on Monday night to discuss plans for the evening. Police, which received a call shortly after 7 p.m. on Jan. 5, 2011, said the suspects walked into the playground area where the five teens were standing. That’s when the shooting began.

Along with the two deaths, two others were wounded by shots while the fifth teen escaped. McCaleb, who was a junior at nearby Redlands High School, died at the scene while Jackson, also an RHS junior, died later at Loma Linda University Medical Center.

The trial has been delayed on other occasions due to the availability of defense counsel. A March 14 readiness hearing is schedule in San Bernardino Superior Court. The three defendants were appeared in court on Friday when the motions for an additional delay were made.

It is a high profile case that received immediate attention on Los Angeles TV stations while reaching the front page of several Southern California newspapers. Coverage included the shootings, its aftermath including the funerals, plus a police news conference to request public assistance. It wasn’t until Feb. 2012 that the suspects were arrested and later charged in connection with the shootings.

FRESNO – The Fresno Police Department arrested a suspect who allegedly held up a convenience store and then led officers on a high-speed chase that ended with him crashing his car into a fence.

Police learned from a clerk at the 7-Eleven on Chestnut Avenue near Belmont Avenue in East Central Fresno that a man with a plastic bag over his head had held up the store just before 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The man allegedly told the clerk that he had a gun. He said he demanded money and then ran off, according to authorities.

Officers nearby saw the suspect running away from the store. The suspect, now identified as 47-year-old Daniel Peckham, jumped into a car and took off through a residential neighborhood. Police followed him, but Peckham soon lost control of his car and crashed into a fence, according to authorities.

Both the plastic bag and the stolen cash were recovered, according to police.

REDDING – Police have announced the arrest of one of their publicized “Most Wanted” suspects, 22-year-old Dylan Forest Meese of Redding.

Meese appeared on the Most Wanted list a week ago, Tuesday February 25th. The charge at that time was Burglary, according to the press release from Redding Police. He had been convicted of the offense and had failed to appear for his sentencing.

On Meese’s Facebook page, he had posted a somewhat hopeful message last August about re-directing his life. “i laugh at those who dare to judge me because i know when i die only one will and can truly judge and he is my lord and savior GOD. matthew 1-5. I may have done my stupid childish things but now im a man of god i am moving to oregon soon because i have a good job up their. constructing buildings.”  Perhaps those plans changed when he was arrested in October, at that time for possession of drug paraphernalia and probation violations. In 2011, when he was 19,  Meese had been arrested for automobile theft and drug charges on two different occasions, and again in 2012 on drug charges.

Dylan Meese recent mugshot

His most recent Facebook post was made on January 29, when he said “got some wax oil for sale hit me up [phone number deleted]“. Unless he was trying to unload some surplus floor wax he had at home, he was likely offering up some “honey oil” also known as hash oil or wax, which is a concentrated cannabis product, and an illegal narcotic.

Redding Police received a call last Thursday, February 27 at 3 pm with an anonymous tip that Dylan Meese could be found at his residence on the 2600 block of Lanning Avenue. He was arrested the next day, and booked into Shasta County Jail on five outstanding warrants, along with two charges for narcotics possession (wax?) and one count of vehicle theft.

Redding police announced that Dylan Meese’s arrest was their 98th of their “Most Wanted” program, and that twenty fugitives remain at large. They offer a $250 reward for information leading to an arrest called into Shascom at 530-245-6540, the county Secret Witness line at 530-243-2319, or the website at SecretWitness.com.

EASTVALE – Two males who reportedly stole electronics from a business, tried to flee the scene and were then pulled over by officers, released a dog from their vehicle, forcing officers to shoot in self-defense.

On Sunday March 2, at approximately 2:30 p.m., Eastvale officers were called to the scene of a burglary in process. Two adult males were reportedly in the electronics department of a business on the 12000 block of Limonite Avenue. The witness reporting the crime observed the men removing protective security packing from items in their possession. The reporting individual also observed the two men leave the business separately and made note of a vehicle that left the scene, giving a description to the dispatcher.

After observing a vehicle that matched the description given at the scene, deputies made an enforcement stop. The deputies then made contact with the occupants of the vehicle. At this time, one of the occupants opened the door, releasing a large dog. According to one of the deputies, the dog was a pit bull and immediately charged. The deputy fired two shots in self-defense, incapacitating the dog. The dog is expected to survive and neither the deputies nor suspects were harmed.

The vehicle was searched and items were found inside that had been stolen. The suspects were identified as Salvadore Lopez, 38 of Fullerton and Saege Hall, 25 of Canyon Lake. Lopez was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for burglary, possession of stolen property, conspiracy and providing false identification to law enforcement. Hall was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center for burglary, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy.

The Sheriff’s Department asks that anyone with information about this incident to contact Deputy Myers at the Jurupa Valley Station at 951-955-2600.

VISALIA – Police arrested a man they believe used false prescriptions to get medications at a local pharmacy on at least two occasions.

The Visalia Police Department arrested 32-year-old Daniel R. Smith on Saturday in connection to two thefts, the first of which dates back to October.

On Oct. 7, 2013, Smith allegedly called in a false prescription to the Pill Box Pharmacy in Visalia pretending to be a representative of a doctor’s office. Then, using a false name, Smith went to the pharmacy and picked up the medication, according to the police department.

The name Smith used belonged to the victim of an identity theft, police said.

Smith allegedly pulled the same scheme on Feb. 6, 2014, when he called in another false prescription to CVS Pharmacy. Using the same stolen identity, Smith again picked up another false prescription, according to the police department.

During an investigation, police were able to identify Smith as the suspect and arrested him on March 1. He was booked into the Tulare County Main Jail for two counts of commercial burglary and two counts of identity theft.

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – A 5th grade teacher at Garfield Elementary School has been arrested for his alleged sexual relationship with a former student.

Jeffrey Yoshitake, 42, was the victim’s math teacher. He is accused of having a seven year relationship with her that began when she was 15 after she had moved on to high school. They reportedly ended the relationship in 2012, and she reported it to police last week.

Yoshitake will be charged with felony lewd acts with a minor. He was arrested last Friday and held on $100,000 bail. He reportedly taught at Garfield Elementary in Alhambra for 15 years. Though it is thought that this was an isolated incident, investigators are aware that there may be other victims, and have encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.

Earlier this year, another Alhambra Unified School District employee was also accused of child molestation. Alhambra High assistant principal Andrea Michelle Cardosa was charged with molesting two young girls while she was a basketball coach at a Riverside School. She resigned her position after serving only 3 months when the allegations were made. She reportedly admitted to the actions, and will be arraigned Friday.

REDDING – Police announced the arrest of a burglary suspect, and are still looking for his female accomplice after they drove a motor home through a fence and ended up hiding in a garage.

Redding detectives had been investigating burglaries that had occurred last week at two businesses on Victor Avenue between East Cypress and Hartnell Avenues. They were able to determine, based on the proximity and evidence left at the scenes, that the same suspects were very likely responsible for both break-ins.

The couple were spotted on Tarmac Road with the stolen motorhome.

The couple were spotted on Tarmac Road with the stolen motorhome.

On Sunday morning, about 5:30, police got a call reporting that a man and woman were seen acting suspicious near a motor home parked on Tarmac Road, just a few blocks from the earlier burglaries. The people had left by the time officers responded to the area, but they had both left the scene. It was soon discovered that the motor home had been stolen from the parking lot behind Tax Associates Xcetera, located near the corner of Victor and E. Cypress, near the other burglaries. It appeared that the vehicle had been driven through a chain link fence to get it off the property.

Less that two hours later, on nearby Airstrip Road, a woman reported to police that she had found a man and woman hiding in her garage. They both ran again, but police caught up with the man, 38-year-old Louis Ray Sanchez from Redding, but across town in the northern area. His partner managed to get away, and is still being sought. She has not been identified at this point. Sanchez had in his possession property from both the motor home and the earlier commercial burglaries.

Sanchez was booked into the Shasta County jail on charges of burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of narcotic paraphernalia and unlawful personal identification. He was also booked for outstanding bench warrants. He will also likely be charged with grand theft-motorhome. Sanchez had been arrested last December on possession of narcotics and paraphernalia, burglary tools, and ammunition. He followed that with a post Christmas arrest for being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Anyone who may have more information about the goings on of Louis Ray Sanchez, or know the whereabouts of his partner in crime is encouraged to call Redding Police at 530-225-4214.

According to Sac Sheriff, on December 21, 2013, Howard was reportedly inside of a vehicle at the convenience store, located in the 8000 block of Florin Road, when Jackson approached the vehicle and shot Howard through the car window.

Detectives said they believed that Jackson shot Howard in the upper body through a car window. Howard then drove a short distance to the intersection of Florin Road and Franklin Boulevard where someone within the vehicle called 911 to request assistance. Howard was pronounced dead at the scene by fire personnel. Both Jackson and Howard reportedly knew each other. It was also reported that two groups of young men, one with Howard and one with Jackson, had been in a confrontation prior to the shooting.

Female victim sexually assaulted while living at homeless encampment

SAN JOSE, Calif – A Homeless encampment yields little security for female occupants. 45-year-old Salvador Louie Aleman appeared before dept. 42 at 1:30 PM on Feb 20, 2014 at the Hall of Justice in San Jose for charges stemming from battery and sexual assault under PC 242-243(a). Salvador also faces charges of HS 11550 (a) for being under the influence of Methamphetamine.

On Feb 17, 2014 a female victim reported that she was attacked by Aleman while she was staying in his RV on a lot used by homeless people near Senter Road and Feldspar Drive in San Jose.  Aleman was on formal probation and was arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance, and for sexual battery. The victim reported that Aleman and she had been involved in a verbal argument and that he had asked her to leave. However, she stated she did not have a place to stay, and had stayed with Aleman for several days before he had attacked her.

She reported seeing Aleman smoking Meth throughout the day, when he had become increasingly agitated and entered the RV. Aleman struck the victim in the face and chest area several times knocking her to the ground. He then forced himself on her, eventually having non-consensual intercourse with the victim. He then violently forced the victim to leave the RV by kicking and punching her until she was able to collect her things and leave the area.

A records check on Aleman turned up the suspect’s photo, and when shown to the victim she said, “Oh my god, that’s him. Oh my god, that’s Sal”. During a confrontation with several subjects hanging around a fence line located around a lot with RV’s and wood piles, they were able to identify a possible suspect.

Aleman swore at officers and evaded questioning by hiding himself in the back portion of the lot. Because the fence was locked with a padlock and a large chain, SJPD officers called for support and K9 units to help cut the lock in order to enter the area. Aleman and another suspect were located and taken into custody for being under the influence of a controlled substance while refusing to cooperate with police.

When investigators asked Aleman about the incident, he denied knowing about the sexual assault. He told officers that she was his friend and had grown tired of her staying with him when he asked her to leave. He said that he did not hurt her or use any type of force against the victim. He stated that he was unsure why she wanted to charge him with sexual assault.

Identity Thief’s Spending Spree Ends

LOS ANGELES – The desire to further one’s education is a noble one.  The desire to pay for said education with fraudulently obtained credit cards is not so noble.

34-year-old Reon Jordan apparently failed the course in honesty when she was recently arrested following a nine month investigation.

In addition to purchasing class time at West Los Angeles Community College with stolen funds, Jordan also invested in hair extentions and jewlery because, as all schoolchildren learn, it’s better to look good than to be good.  Maybe thieves think this also holds true wherever you travel, which might explain the airline tickets to Alaska additionally purchased with the credit of purloined identities.

At her home police found 400 identity profiles and the credit card numbers of 200 unwitting victims.  These victims have been located, no only in California, but also in Tennessee and Mississippi.

The frightening aspect of this escapade is the fact that Jordan worked at ABEO, a medical billing company, where apparently she had access to thousands of client identity profiles.  The LA County Sheriff’s Department warns the public to contact the three main credit reporting bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian) and have your credit locked. You can unlock your credit any time you wish to apply for it.

News year’s partying gets woman on Most Wanted list.

REDDING – It doesn’t take all that much to appear on the Shasta County Most Wanted Criminals list. Most of the suspects that get publicized are the result of an arrest and conviction, and then a failure to appear at the sentencing hearing. In the case of non violent criminals, the sentence will more than likely end up being short, if any, jail time, and supervised probation. However, failing to appear results in a publicly announced picture and description on the most wanted list, and a $250 bounty for turning the person in, along with the potential for a harsher sentence.

Such was the case with Tina Marie Newberry, 44-years-old of Redding. She was arrested on New Year’s Day for possession of a controlled substance, and several counts of probation violation for past misdeeds. After failing to appear for the sentencing phase, her name and picture were released this week as a ‘most wanted’ suspect.

Police were told they could find Newberry in front of this building on California Street, and they did.

Police were told they could find Newberry in front of this building on California Street, and they did.

Sure enough, someone claimed the bounty, and let the Redding Police know that they could find Newberry at 1920 California Street, and she was picked up at 11:17 this morning. This time, it is likely she will be held until sentencing while someone who either knows or recognized her will enjoy an extra $250.00. This was noted as the 99th arrest since the Most Wanted program began. Who will be number 100?

Suspect Emptied Out the Account

HOLLISTER—Authorities with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department have arrested a mother of two band members on embezzlement charges after they discovered that the account had a deficit balance.  Deputies arrested the 53-year-old Treasurer of the San Benito High School “Baler Band Booster Club”, Debra Curtis, and charged her with embezzlement.

On March 3rd, the Band’s director alerted the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department when he attempted to cash a check from the booster club.  The bank refused to cash the check.

The bank advised him to contact the Booster Club.  After an investigation by the Booster Club they discovered that Curtis had emptied the account.  Its is estimated that she stole over $57,000 of the band’s money that was supposed to be used for up coming band events.

Curtis, who has two children in the band, was appointed Treasurer of the San Benito High School band booster club in July after handling uniform duties in the past.  She eventually resigned her duties as treasurer last month.

Curtis was able to obtain an Automated Teller Machine card (ATM) under the Booster Club’s name and used it to make withdrawals and purchases for her personal use.

A photo from the 90's, according to her Facebook page.

A photo from the 90′s, according to her Facebook page.

“She wrote checks to herself and obtained the ATM card, that was also a credit card, to make the purchases, leaving the Booster Club’s account with a deficit balance of $700.00″ San Benito County Sheriff’s Captain Tony Lamonica said. “ Her bail was set at 35,000.00 dollars.”

In a post on Curtis’s Facebook page today, she stated simply “so ashamed so sorry”, and after a message of support from a friend, she added “thank you for this. I am an addict.”

Earlier this year, she somewhat ironically posted an appeal on her page to raise funds for the band. On January 28 she provided a link to the “gofundme” site that included this message from her: “Thanks for taking a moment to read about our band. We really need your help. We are a humble band in a small town and although we have the support of the community, it’s just not enough to keep our band competitive with the other bands in the silicon valley. Besides high school football, band and farming, there aren’t a lot of things to keep our tweens and teens busy doing the right things. Band is a group of fantastic of kids who are accepting of each other and are like a family. They just need a little help, from you. Not only is this a fun activity but there are scholarships in music, as these kids go on to university! Music is a common thread that allows for kids of all backgrounds to feel accepted. Won’t you please help keep this organization to continue to live on?  Our uniforms were purchased “used” over 10 years ago, so you can imagine the state they are in now, and instruments are on their last leg. We perform approximately 15 competitions during the school year of which the students pay for the transportation and entry fees of about $3,000.00 This leaves nothing for uniforms and repairs to instruments. We are set up as a 501(C-3) and our number is 94-2478452 so your donation is tax deductible. Please find it in your heart to send something to help us, no matter how large or small anything will help. If everyone sent just $20.00 the difference it would make for our band would be huge. If you wish to see more, please check out our website at www.sbhsband.org.

The San Benito County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating this case and is still going over bank records to determine the exact amount of money that was taken.  The Sheriff’s Officer is asking that if anyone has information about this case to call them at 1-831-636-4080.

SAN BERNARDINO – Police are still trying to determine if three separate shootings that left one man killed and three others in critical condition were connected.

Damon Enon Edwards, Jr., 20, of San Bernardino died of his injuries shortly after he was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. Kiyon Drake, 20, of San Bernardino, was also struck in the chest by bullets, but police said he is expected to survive after being taken to another area hospital by a private citizen. The time frame during the March 5 melee was just over three hours.

The first shooting took place near North Medical Center Drive and West Union Street near the West Side Food & Liquor at 12:18 p.m., which was where Edwards and Drake were struck . Sgt. Gary Robertson said Drake was taken to the unidentified hospital for surgery on shots to his upper torso. The men were standing on the corner when the gunfire erupted. “The reason for the shooting,” said Robertson, “has not yet been determined.”

Both Edwards and Drake are connected to street gangs, according to San Bernardino Police. San Bernardino Sheriff’s deputies, also involved in the shootings, said that reports included gunfire seen coming from a white, four-door sedan from two black males in their 20s.

Less than two hours later on the 2000 block of West Gilbert St., about a mile away from the first shooting, Jonathan Scruggs, 32, had pulled into his driveway. Reports are that one or two people got out, shot Scruggs in the head and upper body. A police news release stated that Scruggs, who survived, was in critical condition, his vital signs stable. Witnesses told police a silver Chevrolet Malibu, possibly 2008 or newer, was observed.

The third shooting, which occurred in the 3300 block of East Love Lane – several miles away from the first two shootings – involved a dark-colored vehicle, which could have been a Malibu. It pulled up alongside Chris Jones, 25, of San Bernardino. A passenger got out of the car, shot Jones several times, and fled at around 3:30 p.m. Police said Jones was in critical condition and expected to survive.
