Man arrested trying to buy parts for stolen bike

SANTA ROSA – Perhaps he forgot he had stolen it back last November. Or maybe he bought it from someone who had. Or maybe he just had a lot of nerve.

On Friday at 2:45 in the afternoon, two young men drove up to Santa Rosa Powersports seeking a part for their motorcycle, which was stowed in the back of their pickup truck. The people in the shop must have recognized the bike in the truck as the same one that was stolen from the shop on November 5, and they contacted the Santa Rosa Police. The two men lost their chance at claiming they didn’t know it was a stolen bike when they quickly left, taking the truck with the bike down Santa Rosa Avenue.

An officer in the area, now aware of the situation, spotted the truck headed north, and went after them. The truck turned off the road when they saw they were being chased, and the two men bailed out on foot.

An “Eye in the Sky” – Sonoma Sheriff’s helicopter “Henry 1″ was conveniently in the area, and assisted in observing so officers could set up a perimeter. The two men were soon in custody. 21-year-old Fogatia Fuiava was arrested, while his companion was released. Fuiava was booked into Sonoma County Jail on charges of possession of the stolen motorcycle, violation of probation, and violation of parole.

Fuiava had been charged in late 2009 with attempted murder when he was 17. He had reportedly been in a conflict while with a group of friends in Sebastopol. They returned to find their antagonist later after the verbal exchange, and shot the man with a sawed-off shotgun from a car. Fuiava was with three others, including a teenage girl, when he fired the single shot, which resulted in several minor wounds in the victim’s arm and torso from the shotgun pellets. He was tried as an adult in the Sonoma County Court.

LOWER LAKE – LAKE COUNTY  A Sacramento man traveling through Lower Lake, a town at the south end of Clear Lake, was pulled over Saturday at 5 pm because his Ford pickup truck did not have the licence plates properly displayed. The traffic stop resulted in a drug arrest for the 30-year-old driver, Solomon Schumaker.

Schumaker was pulled over on Spruce Grove Road in Lower Lake.

Schumaker was pulled over on Spruce Grove Road in Lower Lake.

According to Steve Brooks of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, when the deputy addressed Schumaker about the plates, he noticed that he seemed to be under the influence of a central nervous system stimulant, which may be methamphetamine, cocaine, or any number of other legal or illegal drugs. He asked Schumaker to come out of the truck and administered a series of tests, which he failed. The deputy placed him under arrest  for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Drugs, a gun, and cash were seized in the traffic stop from Schumaker's truck.

The deputy and his partners continued to search Schumaker’s vehicle, and found evidence that he was operating as a drug dealer. They located 16 ounces of crystal meth and 1.75 ounces of cocaine. He also had a digital scale and packaging materials, and a .32 caliber loaded semi-automatic pistol. They also found several bundles of cash totaling $5,500.00 stashed in a towel under the driver’s seat.

According to Schumaker’s Facebook page, he is a certified arborist who works on tree maintenance, trimming and removal for a Sacramento company. A records check by the Lake Sheriffs also revealed that he is a convicted felon.

He was booked into Lake County’s Hill Road Correctional Facility and charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance and possession while armed, in addition to being a felon in possession of a firearm, and his earlier under the influence charges. The cash was seized and will likely be forfeited as profits form illegal narcotics sales.

Colton Man Acquitted in Nephew’s Pit Bull Mauling

SAN BERNARDINO – Jurors took less than one day to acquit a man accused of leaving his two-year-old nephew unattended, eventually attacked by five pit bulls.

Marco Zamudio, 23, of Colton, was released from jail after the Friday morning verdict was read in a San Bernardino County courtroom. Zamudio’s nephew, Samuel Eli Zamudio, died on Sept. 23, 2013 when he was left alone in the back room of a Colton residence on the 700 block of Citrus Ave.
Police reports the boy reached outside the window of a rear bedroom into the back yard. He was pulled into the yard by the pit bulls. He was eventually found, mauled to death, lying in the corner of the back yard.
At the time, Marco Zamudio was arrested and so was Samuel’s grandmother, Eustolia Zamudio, 42. She was released by Colton police, however, and not charged when prosecutors determined that she was at work.
The boy, who was playing video games with his seven-year-old brother in a back bedroom, had leaned out the window to play with the dogs. When family members later determined that he was not in the room, they searched the house and eventually discovered him in the back yard where there were between seven and 10 dogs.
Colton police, who reported the time was about 30 minutes from the time Samuel was discovered missing and eventually discovered, called the residence unsanitary, also saying the dogs were not cared for properly.
Defense attorneys called it a freak accident. The criminal complaint, however, stated that Marco Zamudio was responsible for Samuel’s care. He created conditions, said prosecutors, that “willfully caused and permitted a child to suffer, and inflicted thereon physical pain that resulted in death.
The five pit bulls that were involved in the attack were taken by animal control officers, along with three other dogs at the home.

REDDING Some people just don’t take a hint, no matter how hard you try to convince them they are doing wrong. Drugs are often the catalyst for repeat offenders, and Joshua Woodrow White has been a textbook case for Shasta County law enforcement.

Back in 2009 at 19-years-old,  White made his first big splash on the scene when he was arrested along with Hal Kimberly Sutherland, 22, when they accosted a pedestrian on Galaxy Way. They pulled up to a 21-year-old man in their truck, and White held a gun to him while Sutherland demanded money from the victim. Deputies and police later found them at a home on Boyle road, according to a report by Redding.com. They confiscated a replica BB handgun that was used in the holdup, along with cash, OxyContin pills, and syringes. They were both arrested for armed robbery and possession of drugs and paraphernalia. The older Sutherland was also arrested for a probation violation, and was perhaps showing his younger friend the ropes.

White was arrested here the first time Sunday night.

White was arrested here the first time Sunday night.

Joshua White was at it again this year, with at least 3 arrests. On February 18 he was arrested by Anderson Police, and charged with vandalism, possession of a narcotic or controlled substance, and giving false identification to police. With bail set at $10,000, he was scheduled to appear in court on April 4.

Then last Sunday night Redding Police received a report of a residential burglary on the 1600 block of Olive Avenue. The 27-year-old woman victim reported that she had encountered a white man standing in her kitchen holding a pillow case that appeared to have stolen property inside. When she confronted the man, he ran from the apartment, according to a Redding Police press release. A search of the area turned up a man matching the description at an apartment in the Eucalyptus Arms nearby at 1575 Olive. He was leaving the apartment, and police found some of the reported stolen goods on him, and in the unit he was leaving. He was arrested for burglary and possession of stolen property, and booked at the Shasta County Jail at 1:27 am Monday morning.

After processing, White was released on his own recognizance, likely due to the non violent nature of his burglary. At 2:36 am he was once again on the street, and only a few blocks from where he was arrested and possibly staying. (His address is listed as “transient”, though earlier this year his home was listed in north west Redding.) It appears that he headed out on foot from the jail on West Street in the direction of the Olive Avenue apartments, but he did not get very far.

White made several attempts at homes on Placer Street. The jail can be seen in the background.

At 3:21 am, police received a report of a burglary at the 2000 block of Placer Street, just a block around the corner from the Jail and Courthouse. The 23-year-old male victim reported that he and his wife, and two small children were woken to the sound of someone kicking the door of his house. When he got up, he saw a man in his living room, who ran before officers arrived.

The officers began their search for the suspect, but it didn’t take much to find him. They heard yelling coming from a nearby house that someone is trying to break in. The 39-year-old man  told police he had confronted the suspect trying to remove the window screens to get into the house. The man once again ran away, and the search continued. Fortunately the police had a K9 to assist. “Tarro’ the police dog helped officers track down their man, who was trying to hide in the bushes of another house nearby. He refused to give up, and resisted  violently as they tried to take him into custody. Tarro joined in the battle, and the suspect, who to no one’s surprise was the the same Joshua Woodrow White, finally gave up.

He was booked once again into the nearby Shasta County Jail in charges of burglary, prowling, attempted burglary, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest. Before taking a cell at the jail this time, he was treated at the Shasta Regional Medical Center for his encounter with Tarro and the officers. Many residents, such as those commenting on KRCR’s story, are hoping he will stay in custody for a while longer this time. His actions this time may help make that happen.

SACRAMENTO—Sacramento Police arrested Todd Baker, 34, and Saleem Pittman, 31, on March 9, 2014 for stealing a boat and trailer from a Del Paso Heights residence, after Sacramento police received a call from a neighbor.

Shortly before 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 9, a man alerted the police that a white van had hitched up to his neighbor’s boat and trailer in the 3700 block of Dayton Street in Sacramento and driven off with them. According to a police report, the neighbor knew that the owner of the boat was not home.

Officers searched the area and spotted the van towing the boat and trailer southbound on Del Paso Boulevard. The van was stopped and two men were taken into custody.

Baker was booked on suspicion of conspiracy, possession and theft of the vehicles, violation of probation and possession of a controlled substance for sale. Pittman was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, possession and theft of the vehicles, violation of probation and driving without a license. Both men were booked into Sacramento County Jail.

Pittman had a prior arrest in September of 2013 on drug charges. At that time he listed his residence as a home on Dayton Street just a block away from the boat theft scene. Though his residence is now miles away in south Sacramento, it is possible he had a connection with the owner of the boat when he lived just a block away.

Todd Baker works as a manager at a marine maintenance and restoration company in Sacramento. He has on his Facebook page a number of photos of boats he himself either owns or restores, leading to speculation that the stolen boat may have been one he either claims to own, or perhaps sold to the owner but was not paid. Those details will no doubt come out as police review the case with the District Attorney’s office for prosecution.

On March 1, 2014, the San Jacinto Police Department received a report of an attempted homicide at a motel located on the 600 block of North Ramona Boulevard. Upon arriving at around 7:00 PM, officers discovered an adult male with a life-threatening stab wound. The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital and listed in critical condition.

Following an investigation, an acquaintance of the victim, William Donald Leonard II, 49, was deemed a suspect in the assault. Officers Shoot, Kill Woman Wielding Knives

FRESNO – Officers shot and killed a woman who had been acting erratically and threatened them with knives in a small apartment.

Officers responded to a 3:30 p.m. call on Friday at an apartment complex near Fresno State from a man who said that a woman was dancing around outside and acting erratically. By the time officers arrived at the scene, the woman had gone inside the man’s apartment and the man asked them to remove her because she was trespassing.

The officers entered the living room of the apartment and the woman appeared from the kitchen with two 8-inch carving knives. She advanced toward the officers, swinging the knives, according to Chief Jerry Dyer.

“The officers told her to drop the knife,” Dyer said. “One of the officers deployed a Taser and it did not have the desired affect. She continued to advance toward the officers in this relatively confined area. The officer felt threatened at that point, and fired his firearm at the female.”

The woman, now identified as Veronica Canter, was hit at least two times, once in the lower part of her body and once in the upper part of her body. Officers unsuccessfully attempted to do CPR and first aid on Canter. She died from her injuries.

Dyer said this is not the first time the police department has been called out on account of the woman’s behavior.

“We had a prior call with this female back in the middle of February. She was displaying some erratic, bizarre behavior at that time, so it appears the behavior she was displaying today may have been similar to that,” he said.

Dyer said that Canter and the man who called police had “some type of relationship,” but he was not “certain as to what degree.”

This is Fresno’s second officer-involved shooting of 2014.

REDDING  - A man who has been in and out of jail a lot recently decided he would not go back again, but of course he is back, and may serve longer this time for fighting a police dog.

Wilkinson was seen trying to get into cars in the parking lot in the middle of the night.

Wilkinson was seen trying to get into cars in the parking lot in the middle of the night.

48-year-old John Charles Wilkinson has had quite a few run-ins with the law this past year. In April 2013 he was arrested in Dairyville in Tehama County and charged with possession of a controlled substance. In August he was arrested for failure to appear in court. And on January 30, he was picked up by Redding Police for indecent exposure, and was also charged with probation violations. Under California’s AB109 provisions, he was once again released under post-release community supervision.

At 3:53 this morning, however, he was up to no good once again. According to the Redding Police, officers were sent to the Hilltop Garden Inn on Bechelli Lane on a report of people trying to go through the vehicles parked there. When officers arrived, they found Wilkerson, but when they tried to detain him as a suspect, he picked up a large sharpened stick, about the size of  a baseball bat. He took a hitting stance ready to swing away, and said they’d have to kill him before bringing him back to jail.

The Hilltop Garden Inn is near Interstate 5 where Bonnyview crosses the Sacramento River. Wilkinson eventually took off running west, towards the river, but as he hit the steep embankment, he lost his footing and fell down towards the shore. He then decided to go for it, jumping in the river to make his getaway. He didn’t get far in the cold early morning water, and came back out on the same side, officers still in pursuit. He climbed back up the embankment, but did not give up.

Officers employed their K9 unit, police dog Carr, to help apprehend Wilkinson. He fought back, and kicked the dog several times in the head. The officers resorted to baton strikes to subdue Wilkinson, and were able to finally arrest him. After being medically cleared, he was booked into Shasta County Jail on charges of brandishing a weapon at a peace officer, resisting arrest, and battering a police dog. Apparently he did not manage to steal anything before he was caught, as no charges related to burglary or breaking into vehicles were made at this time. Carr seemed to handle the encounter with little injury, though he will be thoroughly checked by his handler and veterinarian.

Five Years in Prison for Man Who Took Drunken Drive through Busy Softball Field

CALEXICO – A Calexico man who hit several parked cars and drove through a girls’ softball clinic last year is now facing five years in prison.

In January 2013 on a Saturday morning around 9:30 AM, Calexico police received several calls regarding a vehicle hitting parked cars near Heber Avenue and CK Clark Street in Calexico. A man, who was later deemed intoxicated, drove a white Chevy Tahoe into a school fence and hit eight parked cars.

Parents and coaches were watching a girls’ softball clinic at the time. When witnesses saw the erratic vehicle drive into Rockwood Elementary School’s field, they quickly ushered the girls into the dugout. Soon after, the vehicle slammed into a parked car hard enough to be launched into field, landing just a few feet from the bleachers, which were full. Witnesses at the scene were shaken by the events, but several jumped into action.

When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the driver of the vehicle being detained by several angry parents. The two passengers fled the scene. These other two suspects hid in a nearby backyard, but were apprehended quickly with further assistance from witnesses.

The driver Jesus Cardona, 19, of Calexico was arrested along with passenger Manuel Camacho 21, also of Calexico and taken to county jail. The remaining passenger, 16-years-old, was taken to juvenile hall.

Cardona was charged with five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, several counts of vandalism, and child endangerment. Following a trial, on Friday, March 7, Cardona was sentenced to five years in prison.

SEBASTOPOL – Sonoma County Sheriff’s detectives got a tip that a man wanted on four outstanding warrants was at a house on Burgundy Way, and began their planning to arrest him. Barsky is listed as a transient with no known permanent address. He also reports his occupation as an electrician.

Patrick James Barsky was wanted for felony evading arrest, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence and on a suspended licence, and possession of a concealed weapon, according to Sergeant Michael Raasch of the Sheriff’s Office. Detectives went to the house at the 10200 block of Burgandy at 1:50 in the afternoon Tuesday and observed the 30-year-old suspect outside of the house. Since the last attempt at an arrest had resulted in a high speed chase, the detectives instead placed the house under surveillance while the called for additional units to assist.

Burgandy Way is a small dead end road with just a few houses.

Burgandy Way is a small dead end road with just a few houses.

Barsky was involved in a notable case last December that involved three women in a burglary ring targeting Sonoma vacation homes. When detectives showed up at a Santa Rosa house with the aim of arresting Ronni Roxanne Stout, they observed a car leaving the residence with two people. Fearing one of them may have been Stout, they attempted to pull the car over. Instead, the driver fled, and led them on a high speed chase through the neighborhood. When eventually captured, the driver was the same Patrick James Barsky, who had an ounce of Methamphetamine on him. He was then arrested for possession and sales of narcotics, evading a peace officer, a suspended licence and disobeying a court order. His passenger was not Ronni Stout, but Chelsea Jo Gilliam, who had her own warrant out at the time.

After the detectives observed Barsky go inside the Sebastopol house, the back-up units arrived, and they approached the house to contact him. He refused to come out of the house or reveal himself, so the officers brought in a police dog to help locate him. Barsky was located in a room right off the garage, and he had climbed up into the rafters to hide. Once spotted, he refused to come down, and the detectives had to physically pull him down, getting him a few cuts and scrapes in the process.

Barsky was booked at the Sonoma County Jail on the warrants, with an additional resisting or delaying officers charge added in. His bail was set a $97,500.

PARLIER – One man is dead and another behind bars after a dispute between neighbors ended with gunfire.

On Friday around 3 p.m., officers with the Parlier Police Department and deputies with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office responded to 13551 7th Street in Parlier after receiving multiple calls reporting that a man was the victim of a shooting. Officers arriving on the scene discovered the victim, identified as 40-year-old Arthur Gomez, Jr., inside his residence at 13541 7th Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Gomez, a well-known local youth football coach, was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for emergency surgery, but later died from his injuries.

Several witnesses at the scene identified Gomez’s neighbor, 37-year-old Joel Valera, as the suspect in the shooting. During a search of Valera’s home – located at 13551 7th Street – officers discovered multiple firearms, including one believed to be the murder weapon. Valera was arrested on suspicion of murder.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the neighbors had become involved in a verbal disagreement in the front yards of their residences.

During the argument, “Valera produced a gun and fired more than once, striking Gomez several times. Gomez was shot as members of his family watched,” according to the sheriff’s department, which was requested by Parlier PD to handle the investigation. The sheriff’s department did not reveal what the disagreement was over or whether Valera and Gomez had previous issues with each other.

Neighbors told the media that Valera had only lived in the neighborhood for a matter of months and was rarely seen.

66-year-old David Allen Zimmer, The husband of Cathy Zimmer made a brief court appearance on Monday in Dept 23. Zimmer with his attorney present entered a Not Guilty plea as several members of the media, friends and family watched on. Community members also gathered at the courthouse to remember Cathy Zimmer, who was strangled and placed in the back seat of her Chrysler New Yorker at the San Jose Airport on March 10, 1989. She had been wrapped in a quilt, which detectives working on the cold case released a picture of in February, hoping the clue might help spur someone’s memory.

Domestic abuse is a common factor in most known spousal homicide deaths. How it leads up to the death is often only known by the defendant, but with 25 years behind the crime, a defendant’s hopes that while feigning forgetfulness due to his age, but with the remembrance of his participation in the strangulation death of his estranged wife, the crime may continue to go unsolved.

Police were called to an apartment in this neighborhood twice in February for domestic violence.

This is when Johnson grabbed the female victim by the hair and dragged her to the living room couch. He then began to hold her face on the cushion for more than a few minutes. He then dragged her to the bedroom and forced her on top of the bed. He placed his knee on her chest and began to choke her with both his hands around her neck. He took a sheet from the bed and began to shove it into her mouth, forcing her to vomit while being pinned down. “Stop screaming you (explicative),” Johnson said. “You would not be the first person I’ve killed”, Johnson said. While strangling her Johnson said, “I don’t mean to do this”. He continued to choke her saying, “I just want to talk”.

Eventually Johnson’s rage de-escalated, turning into remorse. Johnson, for several hours asked the victim for forgiveness while continually coaxing her, saying everything would be alright in order to prevent her from calling the police.

But then two days later, on Feb 23, another verbal argument erupted. This time Johnson struck the female victim with his hands on her face. Johnson shoved the female victim down, pushing her to the ground. Once she had fallen Johnson began to hit her. Because there were other family members on the scene Johnson was stopped from continuing his attack, and fled in his car. However, when Johnson returned to the scene he was arrested by the San Jose Police Department and booked into the Santa Clara Main Jail for the assault. By then a peaceful contact order has been signed. Such an order allows contact between the parties if the victim tells the DA and Judge that such as relationship is needed or wanted.

Like Janet Leigh’s character in Alfred Hitchcock’s film ‘Psycho’, a woman was stabbed by a deranged man while she was in the shower.

Brandon Mason, a 29-year-old Chula Vista man who was recently released from jail, was arrested Tuesday for allegedly stabbing his former girlfriend after she broke up with him.

Mason’s 21-year-old girlfriend apparently told him on Monday that she was breaking off their relationship, or that she had been unfaithful. Later, after midnight when she took a shower at her Palomar Street apartment, Mason allegedly broke into the bathroom and stabbed her in the chest. She was able to run out of the building and scream for help. When she collapsed, naked and bleeding, she was assisted by a man who said he was a medic with the National Guard. Another woman called 911 to report the stabbing emergency.

In a Facebook photo dated February 22, Mason carries a rose, possibly for his future victim.

Mason fled on foot, and was found by police that morning after 7 am after he climbed into a garbage dumpster near the Von’s Grocery on Eastlake Parkway. He had just been released from jail three days earlier. He now faces an attempted murder charge.

The victim required surgery but was reportedly in stable condition, according to reports.
