Valentine’s Day is over a month away, but that didn’t stop a Glendale man from letting his passions run high. 48-year-old Ira Geragos was arrested for attempted murder January 7th after he shot the current boyfriend of his ex-wife.

Ira Geragos in his Facebook profile photo

According to a press release by the Glendale Police Department, authorities were first notified at 1:23 AM when a 911 call reported a shooting in the area of 125 East Glenoaks Boulevard. Upon arriving, officers found a 48-year-old male victim suffering from four gunshot wounds. The victim identified Geragos and his vehicle to police on the scene, and the officers broadcast those descriptions to other Glendale Police units.

Officers later spotted Geragos driving in the West Glendale area and began pursuit. During the chase, Geragos attempted to ram the pursuing police vehicles before crashing his car into a tree located on the 100 block of Rosedale Avenue. After Geragos was arrested, officers recovered two handguns and ammunition.

Detectives’ initial investigation revealed that Geragos targeted the victim for his romantic relationship with Gergaos’ ex-wife. Geragos was booked at the Glendale City Jail for attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon due to his attempt to ram his vehicle into police cars during the pursuit. Geragos’ bail has been set at $1 million and will be arraigned at the Glendale Superior Court on January 9th.

The Los Angeles Times has identified the victim as Aram Akopyan, an acupuncturist who operates a health and spiritual living office.

SANTA MARIA – Just after noon on Sunday, a masked man wielding a crowbar attempted to rob the fine jewelry department at Macy’s in the Santa Maria Town Center.

Anthony Lee Arguijo

Anthony Lee Arguijo, 39, of Santa Maria, entered the department store several minutes after 12 p.m., wearing a hooded sweatshirt and ski mask. Only his eyes were visible, as he began staring at numerous store employees.

According to police, Arguijo walked to the fine jewelry department, where he attempted to smash two glass cases, both containing diamond rings, bracelets and necklaces, with the crowbar. However, the safety glass didn’t break after several failed attempts by the suspect.

When confronted by Macy’s loss prevention team, Arguijo allegedly threatened the plain clothes security officers with his weapon and fled the store on foot. Loss prevention officers gave chase and were joined by an on-duty park ranger, at which time they caught up to the suspect and detained him at Main and Broadway, police said.

Arguijo was arrested at the scene, where he was still in possession of the ski mask and crowbar. He was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of attempted robbery.

Although no one was injured in the incident, employees working at Macy’s during the botched robbery were visibly shaken and took extended breaks before returning to the jewelry department to continue working their scheduled shifts, according to witnesses.

Damage to the jewelry cases is estimated at $900, police said.

55-year-old Stabbed to Death; 2 Family Members Arrested for Accessory to Murder

Modesto- Modesto police arrested two people this past Saturday for playing a part in a stabbing that resulted in the death of a 55-year-old man. The suspects, Richard Gonzales, 26, and Jaime Bacca, 33, were arrested for accessory to murder of one of their family members.

Police were called to this location

The incident began on January 12th at around 9 p.m. Fire and paramedic personnel were called to an apartment complex on Yosemite Boulevard in Southeast Modesto. Once they arrived at the scene, they found a 55-year-old man suffering from numerous stab wounds. The victim was later transported to a local hospital by paramedics, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Modesto police officers immediately began questioning the members of the victim’s family. Many of the family members proved difficult to work with; officers were given inconsistent information as to what exactly happened to the victim. Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were called in to take over.

From what they were able to gather from witnesses and family members, detectives learned that the victim was stabbed by 50-year-old Francisco Hernandez Gonzales. In addition to Gonzales, several witnesses placed Richard Gonzales and Jaime Bacca during the incident. After the stabbing, Francisco Gonzales was driven away by Gonzales and Bacca from the crime scene to an unknown location, giving him an opportunity to elude investigators.

Once they were arrested, Gonzales and Bacca were booked into the Stanislaus County Jail.

Officers are currently looking for Francisco Hernandez. He is described as 5’-4” tall, 140 lbs., and has grayish hair and brown eyes. He has a prosthetic left leg and walks with a noticeable limp. He also has distinguishable facial skin discoloration. Francisco Gonzales is wanted for murder and police ask anyone who may know his whereabouts to call 911.

An autopsy has been scheduled for today and the identity of the victim will be withheld until the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office has confirmed it.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Any phone calls to Crime Stoppers can stay anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Information can also be sent to Crime Stoppers by text;  Send a message to 274637 and type “TIP704” along with your message.

Rite Aid Robbery Ends with Two Arrests

On Tuesday morning, January 8, the Ukiah Police Department was called out and responded to a local Rite Aid store on 680 South State Street at 7:15 am. According to the reports, a Hispanic male attempted a theft by taking two 32-inch TVs each worth about $300 from the store display and assaulting the store employee.

The robbery and assault happened at this Rite Aid

The victim, a 55-year-old store manager, reported that the thief, who was later identified as Juan Eriberto Vera, 32, took the two televisions and walked past him without any intention or attempts to pay for the items. As the manager tried contacting him at the parking lot, Vera hit him with one of the TVs and then grabbed him and threw him on the ground. The manager tried getting back up on his feet but Vera punched him in the head. He then placed one of the TVs into a silver Mazda sedan that was parked nearby with a female driver inside, who was later identified as Samantha Lee Green, 21. Green took off speeding out of the parking lot, while Vera escaped on foot. The victim received minor injuries.

Officers arrested Vera on Oak Street, less than a block away from the crime scene

Officers searched the area for both suspects and located Green in the vehicle on the 700th block of South Dora Street. She was detained and the officers recovered the stolen television in the vehicle.

Vera was also spotted running in the area of South Dora Street and Gobbi Street. When the officers confronted him,  Vera refused to stop and resisted arrest when they contacted him physically in the 800 block of Oak Street. One of the officers received minor injuries in the struggle.

Both suspects were known to the police departments. Vera is known to be a gang member and is on probation in Sonoma County with several crimes on his record including violence, weapons, and theft. Officers also found him in possession of about 1 gram of methamphetamine at the time of arrest. Green is also on probation in Mendocino County for prior drug related offences.

Both Vera and Green were booked into Mendocino County Jail and held without bail. They are held for robbery, burglary, violation of probation, and possession of a controlled substance. Instead of owning their own TV, they will now have to watch TV in jail.

Engine startles thieves stealing catalytic converters

$

ROCKIN – A man casually walking to his car after a movie with friends on Sunday night clicked his remote to start the engine, was surprised as four men jumped from underneath his car, and then scrambled to their own car and drove off.

After seeing the men scurry from under his car, the man noted a description of the getaway vehicle and got a partial license plate. According to the Rocklin Police, he called in the report, and officers responded immediately. They searched the area around the Century Theaters on Lonetree Blvd., and soon located a matching vehicle on Highway 65 heading out of town towards Interstate 80.

Now in Roseville, police pulled the car over, and one of the three passengers jumped out of the vehicle and ran into a creek near Atlantic Street and tried to hide in the bushes. While his accomplices remained in the car and were detained, police quickly located the runner and took him into custody as well.

Police report that the officers searching the car found burglary tools and about 12 catalytic converters, along with other property that appeared to have been stolen. Meanwhile, the Rocklin police were getting more calls from other possible victims of this team, who reported that their cars had been tampered with and catalytic converters removed. Two of the reports were from victims whose vehicles had been parked at a church on Granite Drive.

Catalytic converters have become a popular item for thieves because they are fairly easy to remove by unbolting or cutting them out, and contain valuable metals, such as copper. They can fetch $50.00 or more from metal recyclers, even up to $250.00. Replacement, however, can cost as much as $4000.00. Police have warned people to be vigilant about where their vehicle is parked, both at home and in parking lots. People can also have their converters etched with their license plate numbers, or have a muffler shop weld them in more securely. High riding vehicles, like trucks and SUV’s are often targeted because of the easier access to the underside of the car, where the converter is located. If yours has been stolen, you will probably be aware immediately that something is wrong, because it will sound loud when started, like you don’t have a muffler installed.

Suspect Rhota Vin (not pictured) jumped from the getaway car and tried to hide in the bushes

Police arrested the four men, all from Stockton. Benjamin Rodriguez, 32; Lee Marvin Nelson, 21; Brandon Leroy Brockl, 21; and Rhota Vin, 23 were all charged with felony grand theft, consipiracy, possession of stolen property, and possession of burglary tools. Vin was also charged with resisting arrest for jumping from the car and hiding. Rodriguez may also face parole violation charges.

Since at least 12 converters were recovered, police believe there are very likely other victims who have not yet discovered they were missing. Anyone with who believes they may have also been a victim are urged to call their local police, or contact the Rocklin Police at 916-625-5442.

Santa Maria Officers Shoot Man After He Charges Them Wielding Knife

SANTA MARIA – The Police Department reported the city’s first officer-involved shooting of the new year Sunday evening when they were called to the 1100 block of East Sunset after receiving reports of a stabbing/domestic disturbance in the area.

Looking down the 1100 block of E. Sunset

When officers arrived at the scene at 10 p.m., they discovered that the victim, whose name isn’t being released by police, had allegedly just stabbed his wife. The male subject then advanced toward officers with the knife and failed to comply with their demands to surrender, according to the Police Department.

Because the victim wouldn’t comply with officers and charged them with a deadly weapon, they had no choice but to draw their weapons and shoot the man, police said.

Authorities aren’t revealing how many times the victim was shot or the identities of the man’s wife or officers involved in the fatal shooting.

The unidentified man died from his injuries at the scene, and his wife was taken to Marian Medical Center, where she was treated for injuries that weren’t life threatening, police said.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

In 2012, the Police Department reported seven officer-involved shootings, all of which were fatal. One of the shootings involved the death of a police officer, who had been accused of having sex with a minor.

San Luis Obispo police have a man in custody who is believed to be responsible for multiple commercial burglaries.

Carmelo Colaccino

According to SLOPD, transient Carmelo Colaccino, 29, admitted to be one of the suspects involved but refuses to identify his accomplices.

Police say Ben Franklin’s Sandwiches was burglarized on Saturday around 5:42 a.m. after the suspect broke a window to gain entry into the business. The suspect stole cash from the business and left the area.

Officers say they responded to a burglary alarm activation at the business and arrived minutes later but were unable to find the suspect(s).

Police say on Sunday around 5:01 a.m. officers responded to a burglary alarm at Padre Grocery and Liquors. Police determined a burglary had occurred.

The surveillance video showed three suspects enter the business after forcing open an exterior door. The three suspects stole numerous lottery tickets, cigarette packages and a Google Tablet. The police officers were not able to find the suspects.

According to police the first suspect is described as a person of unknown race and sex, 5′6″ to 5′10″, with a thin build. APS officers sting suspected shoplifter

69-year-old Kavoos Baharianfard was arrested by San Jose Police officers in February of 2012 for a misdemeanor PC 459-460(b).  Baharianfard entered the Home Depot located at 2855 Story Road in San Jose with the intent to commit and or commit the crime of petty theft.

Baharianfard was seen on surveillance cameras walking through the parking lot, picking up a receipt and then intentionally going into the store to find the items on the list.  Omar Martinez, a lot attendant with Home Depot said, “If we see a receipt on the ground, we are supposed to pick them up.”

Security cameras monitor store activity. Can you see the one hanging from the ceiling?

An assistant manager with Home Depot said, “It is a big problem with our legal department.” He said, “A lot of times people will try to bring in a receipt and try to get money back.”  Baharianfard had requested a staff professional help him find the items he had seen on the receipt.  Asset protection specialist’s at Home Depot, or APS had seen Baharianfard entering the store, “with no merchandise”.

APS officers saw Baharianfard take a 20 oz DASANI bottled water and exit the front area of the store.   He then moved throughout the store and asked a clerk to help him locate a furnace filter and had selected a 16 x 25 Perm Filter Web Plus for $19.97.  He then left the store.  Baharianfard was charged with taking the furnace filter, and 20 oz DASANI bottled water for $1.53.

Baharianfard chose a furnace filter and bottle of water because they were on the receipt he had found

APS officers detained Baharianfard in the parking lot, and were then taken into custody by San Jose Police officer.   Once in custody, it was found that Baharianfard also had three prior charges of petty theft under PC 666 (a), which now offsets the initial crime with a secondary charge, and can increase the amount of time in jail he may receive if convicted.

Baharianfard appeared in Courtroom 23 in the Santa Clara County Hall of Justice on Friday, Jan, 11, 2013.  In a follow up to determine if restitution, and commitment of the defendant to pay back the money for the items is implemented, the court will order the person or persons to pay back the amount allocated within a specific amount of time in order to settle the dispute.  The presiding judge may order the defendant to pay back the amount determined at the time of the arrest, and/or determination of the value of the property taken, and/or arrange for that person to work of the amount owed through a weekday or weekend work program.

They're not kidding...

When the suspect was located in the parking lot, he had claimed that he had paid for the items. Follow up investigation during the detainment of Baharianfard had yielded 10 receipts on his person. The receipts were collected into evidence, and Baharianfard was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.

GALT – On Tuesday morning a Galt police officer responding to a burglary call was shot and killed.  The suspect, a man in his 30’s or 40’s, was also shot and killed, apparently by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officer Kevin Tonn

The incident began around 11:30 am after the officer responded to a burglary call and confronted the suspect in the 200 block of F street.  The officer called for backup.

The second officer radioed in an “officer shot” call.  The injured officer was taken to Kaiser South Medical Center and pronounced dead.

This is the first time the city of Galt has experienced the death of one of its police officers in the line of duty.

The officer was later identified as K-9 Officer Kevin Tonn, a 3 year verteran of the Galt force.  The deceased suspect is still unidentified.

Fresno Police Officer Kills Suspect High on Meth

FRESNO – A violent struggle between an officer and a suspect high on methamphetamine ended when the officer fatally shot the suspect.

The Fresno Police Department was called to an apartment at Backer and Huntington avenues around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday about a family disturbance. The officer who arrived at the scene learned that a woman called in about her brother, a 34-year-old ex-con who had just been paroled from a Michigan prison and was causing trouble.

The sister, who had called police from a neighbor’s apartment, directed the officer to the apartment her brother was in. The man became violent and the officer tried to subdue him with pepper spray. That’s when the man was able to wrestle the officer to the ground, authorities said.

The suspect’s sister came into the room, saw her brother reaching for the officer’s gun, and jumped on him. She began biting her brother’s back in an attempt to help the officer, police said.

The officer drew his gun and shot at the suspect as he came for him a second time. The suspect was transported to the hospital where he died shortly thereafter, authorities said.

“Whenever we’re dealing with someone under the influence of a controlled substance, you never know what the response is going to be when they are in contact with an officer. At times, we know that some of these subjects have super human strength and are able to do things that an ordinary person wouldn’t be able to do,” said Deputy Police Chief Pat Farmer with the Fresno Police Department.

The officer was treated at the hospital for minor cuts and bruises.

SANTA MARIA – Police arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of stalking and making threats in connection with an incident reported to authorities the previous day.

Arthur Dewain Brown

Arthur Dewain Brown was taken into custody and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail, where he remains in custody for allegedly stalking the victim and making threats against the individual, whose name police aren’t releasing.

On Monday evening just before 7:30 p.m., Santa Maria police received a call about a man with a gun in the 100 block of West Main Street, but when officers arrived the subject had already fled the area, according to police.

An investigation into the incident led officers to identify Brown as the alleged suspect in the case. He was arrested without incident on Tuesday.

Police said that Brown had been previously arrested for physically assaulting the victim and was released from custody on bail when the alleged stalking incident occurred.

Parents of Tortured Child Finally Plead, Facing Prison Terms

VICTORVILLE – Prosecutors finally got a guilty plea from the parents of a three-year girl, who was abused and tortured to death in February 2007.

On Tuesday, officials released additional details on Kassie Joan Claw, 27, and Terrence Lee Smith, 28, who agreed to multiple years in jail after their pleas last week. They have already served six years in jail since the assault. Both also face charges of abusing another daughter, who was two-years-old.

San Bernardino County prosecutors offered a plea deal to both suspects. They face a sentencing hearing on March 15.

Claw and Smith had taken their daughter, Monique, to Victor Valley Community Hospital when she was non-responsive. Hospital officials contacted law enforcement after discovering injuries that included bruising, wounds, burns and scars, according to sheriff’s officials. Their three-year-old, who died from complications of abusive head trauma three months later, never regained consciousness after multiple surgeries to relieve pressure on her skull from brain swelling.

Original stories told by Ms. Claw was that Monique had fallen off playground equipment and that she was burned when she washed her hands, officials said. Later, Claw admitted to striking her, also saying she flung Monique against a door jamb after she urinated on the bathroom floor.

Monique was taken to Victor Valley Community Hospital, but she never regained consciousness

Originally charged with murder, torture and child abuse of Monique, along with abuse of their two-year-old daughter, Terrence Smith pleaded guilty to two felony counts of willful cruelty to a child, facing 13 years and four months in prison, according to the District Attorney’s office. Claw pleaded guilty to one felony count of child abuse. She is facing 25 years to life in prison, said court officials.

If she had lived, said a sheriff’s official, Monique never would have been able to play, eat or walk.

Identity Thieves Still on the Run

SANTA CRUZ—After a lengthy investigation that included the Fresno Police Department, the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department has requested felony arrest warrants for two Santa Cruz residents – 33-year-old Hernan Perez Coto and 32-year-old Jesse Angel Jurado.

Hernan Coto

“We don’t know if they have relatives in Fresno at the moment,” Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Deputy April Skalland said, “But we do know is that these two have committed crimes in Fresno and Fresno PD has shared that information with us and is doing their own investigation.”

Authorities have linked one of the two, Jurado, to an identity theft ring that has victimized dozens of Santa Cruz County residents.  Investigators with the sheriff’s department have obtained video of him using an ATM card of an 82-year-old victim whose home had been burglarized.

Jesse Jurado

On Monday January 7 the California Highway Patrol pulled over Coto and Jurado near Santa Cruz because they were found to be driving a stolen vehicle.  They were also found to be in possession of stolen credit cards and other identity theft items.

Both Coto and Jurado were transported and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, burglary and possession of stolen property.  Jurado’s bail was set at $140,000 and Coto’s bail as set at $20,000 dollars.

The two suspects were released after they posted bail.  Coto is also on probation for being in possession of narcotics while carrying a firearm.  Jurado is on probation for felony evading of a peace officer and is wanted in connection of an identity theft ring that has been plaguing the Santa Cruz County area.

“The warrants were issued about four days after the two were released from jail. Deputy Skalland added, “Jurado is wanted in connection to a different identity theft ring from the one that we had in August. Those people have all been arrested.”

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department is asking if anyone has information on the whereabouts of both Juardo or Coto to please contact them at 1-831-471-1121

5 Suspects Arrested in Nordstrom Robbery

Five suspects were arrested January 12th by the LAPD in connection with a take-over robbery at a Los Angeles Nordstrom Rack department store. 29-year-old Troy Marsay Hammock, 24-year-old Everett Oneal Allen, and 34-year-old Raymond Sherman, Jr. were arrested for robbery while 33-year-old Rochelle Monique Sherman and 29-year-old Paula Roneshia Bradley were booked for accessory to the January 10th burglary.

Raymond Sherman Jr. is the princial suspect, and was arrested for the robbery along with charges of kidnapping and rape.

According to an LAPD press release, around 11:00 PM, Hammock, Allen, and Raymond Sherman, Jr. approached the Nordstrom employees as they were closing the store. The three armed suspects proceeded to force the employees back into the store, holding them hostage while they committed the burglary. Over the course of the robbery, one employee was stabbed in the neck while another was sexually assaulted. Both were later treated for their non-life threatening injuries.

The LAPD were notified of the incident when an employee called a relative, who subsequently informed authorities. The first responding officers saw one of the suspects with a woman exiting the store, and then forcing her back inside, so they summoned the SWAT team due to possible hostage situation. But the suspects fled in a white SUV just before the LAPD’s SWAT Team arrived to rescue the victims.

Detectives from the LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division worked for the next 48 hours to find the suspects and had located all five of them by Saturday evening. Four suspects are currently in custody in Los Angeles while the fifth is in custody at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department in Phoenix, Arizona.

Bradley and Rochelle Monique Sherman are being held for $100,000  bail while Allen’s bail was set for over $1 million. Both Hammock and Raymond Sherman, Jr. are both being held without bail.

Along with the responding officers, SWAT Team members, and Robbery-Homicide detectives, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck praised the fourteen victims who endured the burglary at a news conference.

“Nordstrom should be very proud of these individuals. The detectives have universally commented on how composed they were and how brave they were. [They were] truly, truly heroes in this [situation] and I am so glad that they survived this ordeal.”
