Quick Thinking Officers Save Three Children

HOLLISTER—Two Hollister police officers, Carlos Rodriguez and Ken Anderson, used their training and quick thinking to save the lives of three children from an early morning fire that engulfed a small apartment on Valley View Road on Friday.

Officer Carlos Rodriguez

While investigating another incident, Officer Rodriguez noticed a substantial amount of smoke coming from an apartment across from their location.  Officer Rodriguez notified Hollister Fire Department that he was in need of their assistance.

While the fire department was en route ,both officers Rodriguez and Anderson ran to the upstairs apartment.  Officer Rodriguez was met outside the apartment by a frantic 10-year-old, who told Officer Rodriguez that his younger brother and sister were still in the apartment.

Officer Rodriguez entered the apartment and quickly saw that it was filling up with smoke. He noticed a 2-year-old child, still in his pajamas, standing in the living room staring at the fire.  As Officer Rodriguez picked up the child, he spotted another 5-year-old girl asleep on the couch. He quickly woke her up and all three escaped the burning apartment unharmed.

Officer Anderson went into the apartment and saw that flames were quickly spreading from the stove to the ceiling. He went to the neighboring apartment and evacuated them safely.  Then he went back into the burning apartment armed with a fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire.

The Hollister Fire Department and Cal-fire arrived and put of the remaining smothering fire.  An investigation revealed that the children were left unattended by their mother who had left the stove on while she went to the store.

“Our first objective was to get the kids out and safe,” Hollister Police Captain Dave Westrick said. This case was forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Hollister Police and Fire would like to remind everyone about the dangers of leaving children unattended.  If it had not been for the quick actions of the response of the officers this incident could have had a tragic outcome.

SANTA ANA – Pete Thomas, a 58-year-old doctor of podiatry is to be arraigned for possession of child pornography on Thursday at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.

Thomas was a podiatrist at Coastline Podiatry. According to a Santa Ana police press release, on October 15th, he was having a scanner installed at his Santa Ana office, the technician from the imaging company saw thumbnail images of young girls, nude and in sexual positions, stored on Thomas’s computer. The initial investigation concluded with Thomas’s arrest in December 11th on the charge of felony possession and control of child pornography. He is currently out on $50,000 bail.

CHICO – On Sunday night at 10:30 Chico police officer Regan Ortega was conducting a routine patrol. Upon approaching the Lowe’s Home Improvement store, she noticed that the  fence surrounding  the garden department had been cut.

Ortega called for assistance and officer Rich Hartman and his K-9 partner Luna arrived.  They made a call for anyone to come out before the canine officer would be released.  40-year-old Russell Castor came out from under a semi-truck near the loading dock.

He was taken into custody and denied knowing of anyone else being in the store.  No one else responded to further warnings and Luna was released onto the premises.  Luna located Russell Castor’s brother, 34-year-old Bryan Castor, who refused to comply with the officers commands and was apprehended by Luna.

Further investigation revealed that the Castor brothers were in the process of burglarizing Lowe’s when the officers arrived.  Bryan Castor was treated for the dog bites he received from Luna.  The brothers were booked into Butte County Jail on charges of burglary as well as other charges.

Julio Cesar Pachas, called the most prolific vehicle burglar Garden Grove has seen in recent memory

GARDEN GROVE – Police announced the arrest of a long sought after burglar, who was also involved with an under-aged girl.

Since 2011, the Southwest area of Garden Grove has experienced at least 247 vehicle burglaries. In many reported cases, a white Range Rover was also spotted in the area, or witnessed at the scene of the crime. According to a Garden Grove police press release, in September 2012, a victim saw her vehicle being burglarized, and was able to catch the licence plate of a white Range Rover being used by the perpetrator.

Pachas's use of a distinctive white Range Rover led to his eventual capture

Using the newly obtained information, Garden Grove police investigators served a search warrant on October 4th at the residence listed by DMV from the license plate. Police arrested Julio Cesar Pachas along with a female companion  as they were leaving the location. In searching the home, police found several hundred items reported stolen in vehicle burglaries, along with a handgun, a taser, 119 drivers licenses, 241 credit cards, and hundreds of purses, wallets, backpacks, suitcases, and nearly $100,000 in cash. Victims were identified from Garden Grove, Westminster, Cypress. Los Alamitos, Buena Park, and Los Angeles County.

It was soon learned that his companion was in fact a 17-year-old girl who told the investigators that she had been dating Pachas for a while, and was having a sexual relationship with him. Nude photos of the girl were found on Pachas’s cell phone. He was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and the manufacture of child pornography, along with four counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of a handgun by a felon, with additional charges forthcoming.

When Pachas was arrested, detectives found piles of stolen property in the house

However, detectives who broke this case weren’t through with Pachas. They learned he was out of bail after his arrest, and suspecting he would likely return to what he knew best, they requested a multi location search warrant. On November 20th, the detectives found additional stolen property in a storage unit he was using. Detectives found Pachas at his sister’s house, along with his girlfriend 20-year-old Michella Ann Fuquay. (Fuquay is not the minor girl he was previously found with when arrested in October.) Both Pachas and Fuquay were arrested and charged with possession of stolen property.

Michella Ann Fuquay was arrested with Pachas the second time he was picked up

Garden Grove police say that they have now arrested one of the most prolific vehicle burglars their department has ever encountered. They are holding a public viewing of the recovered property today (January 10th) from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Community Meeting Center. Potential victims and other interested parties are invited to come view the recovered items, and officers will be on hand to answer questions. The Garden Grove Police have set up an information line as well, at 714-563-6052.

Madera Pharmacy Owner Shoots, Kills Armed Robber

MADERA – A robber was shot and killed after he and his accomplice barged into a Madera pharmacy with guns firing and the owner pulled out a gun of his own.

Aquilla Bailey

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Almond Avenue Pharmacy at the southeast corner of Almond and Emily Way. Two armed men wearing ski masks barged into the pharmacy through the unlocked back door and immediately started shooting.

The owner and his mother ducked behind the counter, where the owner was able to grab a gun and return fire. He hit one of the robbers, 31-year-old Aquilla Bailey of Fresno, who fell to the floor and then staggered away from the pharmacy. He made it a block before he collapsed. Bailey later died at the hospital.

The pharmacy owner’s mother was shot in the leg during the gunfire exchange. She was treated and released from Madera Community Hospital.

Police have not yet identified the second suspect. They believe the pharmacy was targeted specifically for the drugs on hand.

Bailey was wanted in connection to a home invasion in August of last year in which three men broke into a home in Fresno, tied up the 82-year-old woman inside and fled with her property. The other two men involved in that crime were identified as 22-year-old Atari Moffett of the Playboys gang and 26-year-old Derick White, a Dogpound gang associate.

Anyone with information about Tuesday’s crime is asked to call the police at (559) 675-4200 or Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-STOP.

Oakdale Father Hosts Daughter’s Friends, Accused of Raping Guest

Timothy Lyman

Oakdale- An Oakdale man was arrested for providing alcohol to minors and later raping a 16-year-old guest at his daughter’s sleepover in his home.

Timothy Lyman, 44, of Oakdale was arrested on Monday on the charge of forcible sex with a minor. He was later booked into the Stanislaus County jail with bail set at $100,000.

On the night of December 27th, Lyman was hosting an after Christmas sleepover party at his house for his daughter and a few of her friend’s from soccer. Police say that at the party, Lyman consumed alcohol and served alcohol to the minors.

The victim told investigators that she had been drinking at the party. She said she later passed out in one of the bedrooms and later woke up in the middle of the night to find Lyman raping her.

Police say Lyman went too far when he hosted a party for teenagers at his home and served them alcohol. “He’s supposed to be in charge of the whole group, and he starts drinking too,” says Oakdale Police Chief Lester Jenkins.

Once police interviewed Lyman, he insisted that he did not expect the rape to happen and believed alcohol was a contributing factor to the incident. He also admitted that he was drunk the night of the rape and did not deny the incident.

Police say Lyman could face additional charges, including those for providing alcohol to minors. Police say this incident is a good example of why adults should never serve alcohol to minors, even in their own homes.

“He seems like a good person, you would not expect something like that from someone like him,” says Lyman’s neighbor Paula Castro. “They’re pretty cool. Lyman gets along with his daughter nice, like a father would.”

Officers are still investigating this incident and looking for other cases that might have come unnoticed.  “I don’t anticipate additional victims, but it’s always possible in the next couple of days there could be others,” says Chief Jenkins.

TSA officers detain homicide suspects

24-year-old Tien Ngoc Nguyen stood in court last week pending charges for the stabbing death of Steven Bangalan of Napa California, on December 21, 2012 at his family’s place of business.  San Jose Police officers responded to a report of an unconscious person, which was later learned to be a stabbing victim at a business called “The Agency” located at 1630 Oakland Road Suite #A112, in San Jose.

Tien Nguyen was arrested while trying to flee the area

San Jose police spokesman Sgt. Jason Dwyer said, “Potential loss of life calls receives a priority one.”  This requires that any officer who is closest to the scene using the Global Positioning Satellite or GPS system respond.  “On other calls, the officers who are responsible for that area are going to get dispatched first.”

“The Agency” currently serves as both a photography studio and an insurance service.  According to family members, Bangalan was a Registered Nurse who had worked at the Napa State Hospital and was currently working full-time during the week at a Hospice Care Center in San Jose.

Bangalan, in support of family members, often worked on the weekends at the studio.  Bangalan, with a few friends, wanted to help celebrate a friend’s graduation, and decided to hold a party at the family’s place of business.

The Agency - Insurance, photography, and home to a party that turned violent

San Jose Police officers found 30-year-old Steve Bangalan at the back entrance of the business.  Bangalan was transported to the Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead some time later from a single stab wound to the right side of his chest.

Homicide detectives working the case quickly identified the suspect through interviewing several witnesses about the accounts that lead to the stabbing death of the victim.

It was reported that Bangalan had broken up several fights that were happening outside of the business, and had tried to stop party goers from hitting each other.  During the confrontation another fight broke out near the rear of the business and Bangalan tried to break up the fight between Nguyen and other guest, and in the process he was stabbed.  He then tried to recover from the stab wound but had collapsed at the scene.  Investigators interviewed party-goers who had seen Tien Nguyen stab Bangalan.

Bangalan was found at the back door of The Agency and later died from his wounds

It was later learned that Nguyen and his girlfriend where planning to fly out of San Jose to travel to Las Vegas Nevada that night.  TSA agents contacted investigators stating that they had detained the suspects before they were able to enter the checkpoint.

Upon further investigation by Homicide Detectives, a wrist watch and bloody shirt were located at Nguyen’s residence. Investigators also found a pair of jeans and shirt that had been recently been bleached and washed, which were collected as evidence.  Both individuals were transported to the Homicide Unit. Investigators with witness identification and corresponding statements detailing the crime gave investigators probable cause to charge Nguyen with the homicide, and booked him into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on Felony Murder charges under PC 187.

Suspected Serial Killer Leads To Opening San Diego Cold Cases

$

SAN DIEGO – After charging Samuel Little for three 1980s homicides in Los Angeles, police are now looking for possible victims in San Diego.

Samuel Little, aka Samuel McDowell

Samuel McDowell, aka Samuel Little, a 72 year-old Kentucky resident was extradited to Los Angeles on drug charges. Following his extradition, police were able to link him to three Los Angeles murders through DNA evidence. Carol Alford, 41, found murdered in 1987; Audrey Nelson, 35, discovered deceased in 1989; and Guadalupe Apodaca, 46, whose body was also found in 1989 all appeared to have been strangled in sexually motivated killings.

Little was acquitted of a Florida strangulation murder in 1982 and accused of another strangulation death in Mississippi that same year. Though never brought to trial, authorities are reopening the Mississippi case. Little moved to San Diego in 1983.

The LAPD Detectives who investigated these cases have followed Little’s trail across the country and are convinced that further investigation will uncover more murders. Mitzi Roberts and Rick Jackson, the detectives who are investigating these crimes, will be focusing on his pattern of sexually motivated strangulations. He already has a history during his time in San Diego.

Little's mugshot from his 1984 arrest

According to authorities, Little attacked a woman in her 20s in September 1984 when she was walking in the downtown area at night. Court documents report that she was grabbed, put in a chokehold and pushed into a car. At a vacant lot near state Route 94, Little proceeded to strangle her to the point of passing out, only to release pressure so she could breathe and then begin again. He then sexually assaulted her, afterwards pushing her out of the car.

Near the same location, a month later, an officer discovered Little, who was zipping up his pants, next to an unconscious prostitute. Police believed that he had tried to strangle her. Convicted of assault and other charges, he served 2 years of a four-year sentence. He moved to Los Angeles upon his release. Now detectives are wondering if he had other victims in San Diego. Little also lived in El Centro for part of the 1990s and early 2000s. Detectives are combing through unsolved murder cases as well as assault cases looking for possible connections.

International 18-month Investigation Leads to Homicide Arrest

Ventura County - A sidewalk confrontation in downtown Oxnard that took place on May 27, 2011 and led to the shooting death of Jesus Valentin set off an investigation that frustrated law enforcement across multiple jurisdictions in two countries until the prime suspect was finally extradited back to the U.S. to face murder charges.

It all began, according to the Oxnard Police Department media statement released just this week, when the suspect, a member of the area’s Southside Chiques street gang, alighted from a pickup truck that pulled up to the curb where Valentin was standing on an Oxnard city sidewalk.   According to the media report, the suspect instigated an argument with Valentin and several others in his company, pursuant to which “the suspect pulled out a weapon and shot the victim.”

Suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body, Valentin was pronounced dead by first responder medical teams.   Oxnard detectives immediately commenced an investigation which led them to identify Mauricio Guzman, 31, as the principal suspect.  At that point “a warrant was obtained for Guzman’s arrest for the murder of Jesus Valentin,” as detailed in the report to the media.

Further investigation at the time indicated that Guzman had fled to Mexico, which began a protracted series of law enforcement agency collaborations designed to ultimately apprehend Guzman and return him to California.  It was not until August 2012, however, that the Mexican government finally issued an arrest warrant and located Guzman living in Tijuana, whereupon he was transported to Mexico City and ultimately extradited back to the U.S.

Guzman was returned to Ventura County Jail on January 9th, where he remains with bail set at $2,500,000.

Shooting car chase leads to two arrests in Compton

As politicians debate the legality of automatic weapons in Washington, the LASD faced an encounter closer to home January 8th when two suspects fired at two deputies with an AK-47 near Lynwood.

According to an LASD press release, the two officers were patrolling in the Compton area when they heard the sound of automatic weapon fire nearby. When they arrived at the source, the deputies found a gunshot victim lying in the street while a vehicle sped away.

Deputies recovered the AK-47 assault weapon at the scene

The deputies contacted medical assistance while they began their pursuit of the vehicle. During the pursuit, the passenger leaned out of the car window and opened fire on the deputies. The unscathed deputies continued their pursuit even as the shooter jumped from the car and ran into the neighborhood.

The pursuit ended when the driver crashed near the area of Santa Fe Avenue and Pine Street and was taken into custody. After establishing a perimeter, officers were able to locate both the driver’s accomplice and his weapon. The male victim is currently listed in stable condition after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. The LASD has not released the names of the suspects.

“We are relieved that our deputies were not hit by gunfire. We thank them for their bravery and willingness to risk their lives to protect the public.” said LASD Captain Mike Parker.

In a televised press conference, Deputy Chris Gomez, one of the officers shot at, echoed Captain Parker’s sentiments.

“Ultimately, we were able to catch the bad guy without getting shot.”

Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Operation Safe Streets (Compton) at (310) 605-6525. PORTERVILLE – Two separate drug raids in Porterville led to the arrest of four adults and the rescue of four children who were in harm’s way, according to police.

400 W. Morton Ave.

The Porterville Police Department served a search warrant at a residence on the 400 block of West Morton Avenue. They found methamphetamine packaged for sale and drug sales paraphernalia. Police arrested David Lopez, 25, and Holly Moisa, 45, at the scene and booked them at the Tulare County Jail.

Officers also found two children, ages 8 and 10, at the residence. Police say the drugs in the home were in an area accessible to the children.

Lopez and Moisa, both of Porterville, will be facing charges of child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance for sale. Lopez was on active parole and will also be facing parole violation charges, authorities said.

The second search warrant was served at a residence in the 500 block of West Morton Avenue. Armed Standoff End in Arrest

Ventura County - Gonzalo Camacho, 35, of Oxnard’s infamous La Colonia neighborhood—the home of several reputed area gang members–had a difficult decision to make on the afternoon of January 9th.

Looking down the 2000 block of Santa Lucia

It all started with a 911 Emergency call that was abruptly terminated by “a hang up”, according to Oxnard Police Department spokesman Commander Ron Whitney’s media statement.  When Oxnard Police Department Dispatch called the originating phone number back, they quickly determined that shots had been fired at a residence in the 2000 block of Santa Lucia Avenue.

Officers immediately responded to the address associated with the phone number and “heard additional gunshots,” Whitney reported.  Soon thereafter, additional support from Ventura County Sheriff’s SWAT team arrived at the residence, including the Tactical Negotiations Unit and the heavily-armored “Bearcat” vehicle.

Once contact with the suspected shooter was made and the residence perimeter was made secure by closing off all access to the area for several blocks “with officers on nearby rooftops”, according to Whitney, officers then used a bullhorn loudspeaker to communicate with  Camacho.  With neighbors flooding the street to see the action, Camacho apparently saw the overwhelming police presence and made the right choice, “slowly and peacefully exiting from the house,”  Whitney said.

Camacho was taken into custody without further incident, and was arrested on charges yet to be determined.  “This was a successful operation in that no one was injured in the incident,” Whitney indicated.

PALM SPRINGS – Following an altercation that led to a suspect being stunned and then shot as he allegedly backed over officers with his vehicle, an arrest was made by a multi-city team of officers.

Officers first encountered the car and suspects in this Palm Springs neighborhood

On Wednesday Jan. 9 at 10:50 p.m. a Palm Springs officer patrolling the 600 block of South Camino Real noticed an unoccupied vehicle fitting the description of one believed to have been used in an attempted residential burglary the day before. Police put the vehicle under surveillance. At 11:30 p.m. two males approached and proceeded to get into the vehicle, at which time officers confronted them. When the men ignored repeated commands to exit the vehicle, officers approached either side of the vehicle. While the passenger was detained, two officers and a sergeant attempted to forcibly remove the driver. At this time, the sergeant used a Taser to stun the driver, who punched the vehicle into reverse, running into the two officers and the sergeant. The driver then sped off in the vehicle with his lights off while officers fired on him.

One bystander, a 49-year-old man, was injured when a bullet fragment struck him in the leg. He was treated at a hospital nearby and released. The officers were also treated for moderate injuries and released. As is policy, the officers were put on administrative leave pending investigation. The suspect remained at large.

The 18-year-old suspect was located and eventually arrested in Cathedral City

On Thursday Jan. 9 at approximately 12:05 a.m. Cathedral City police identified the vehicle involved in the altercation located in a dirt lot in the 32700 block of Pueblo Trail. At this time the Coachella Valley Gang and Violent Crime Task Force, and officers from Beaumont, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Indio and Palm Springs converged on the neighborhood to search for the suspect. The entire block was cordoned off as officers searched for the suspect.

At approximately 11:20 a.m. officers surrounded a home believed to be harboring the suspect. An 18 year-old man, whose name has not been released, surrendered himself to police, needing medical attention for a least one gunshot wound. He was handcuffed and placed in an ambulance.

Palm Springs police are asking that anyone with information call Sheriff’s Investigator James Campos at (951) 955-2777 or to anonymously call Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867.

Despite Gutierrez’s efforts, the victim’s mother called police, who opened an investigation. According to Sgt. Marquez, Gutierrez obtained a lawyer shortly after he was contacted by police and through is attorney, set up a deal where he would surrender to police after the holidays.

After Gutierrez failed to turn himself in, Covina police set up surveillance around his home at the 3200 block of Stella Avenue in West Covina, where they were able to arrest him without incident. According to Los Angeles County booking records, Gutierrez was arrested on suspicion of contacting a minor with intent to commit certain offenses. Palo Alto - Kids don’t play with BB guns in the same way anymore.  A woman had her car stolen after being held up by a man at gunpoint, using what was later revealed to be a BB gun, on California Avenue on Saturday, January 5.

Amador Valentin Rivera

The woman, who is in her 30’s, was approached by 18 year old Amador Valentin Rivera as she sat in her parked car at the corner of California Avenue and Park Boulevard. Mr. Rivera knocked on her window, pointed a BB gun at her, and demanded that she give him her car.

The woman got out of the car and immediately called 9-1-1 as Mr. Rivera sped away. The police arrived within 30 seconds after being dispatched and got a description of the car, a Honda 1999 Accord, from the victim who was not harmed.

Within minutes, another police officer spotted the car matching the same description, with three occupants, turning onto El Camino Real from College Avenue. The officers stopped the car, and “recovered a realistic looking BB gun from the passenger compartment,” said Officer Marco Estrada. The car had not been damaged.

The victim was parked near here when accosted by Rivera and threatened with a realistic looking gun

One suspect in custody is a 16 year old juvenile who had assisted Mr. Rivera in the carjacking. According to Officer Estrada, the victim saw Mr. Rivera pick up someone on the corner of California Avenue after he drove away with her car. The third occupant was determined to have no knowledge of the carjacking and was released.

Both Mr. Rivera and the juvenile will be tried for carjacking, a felony.
