Ventura County – The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Pharmaceutical Crimes Unit—comprised of detectives from VCSD, Simi Valley Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office Bureauof Investigation, and the CHP—has had a busy year, as indicated by the recent arrest of three Oxnard residents on charges of trafficking in prescription medications and firearms.

According to VCSD Public Information Officer Sgt. Victor Fazio, it was early in 2015 when law enforcement authorities received “an anonymous tip regarding Alfredo Leon selling medication in the County of Ventura.” Pursuant to that information, detectives soon identified the 29-year old Leon and his associates, Martin Ipatzi and Erica Barboza, both 22, as actively involved in a conspiracy to sell Alprazolam and Hydrocodone, as well as assorted firearms.

On March 20th, Ipatzi was contacted and found to be in possession of “approximately 700 pills of hydrocodone and clonazepam” along with three handguns, which earned him an arrest and the issuance of a search warrant of his Oxnard residence and two nearby storage lockers he occupied under rental contract. The warrant search of those premises provided the discovery of an additional 12,300 pills “along with 7 handguns and a rifle,” and prompted the arrest of Barboza, as the storage unit was rented in her name and it was determined that she was actively destroying evidence in the period immediately following Ipatzi’s arrest.

With those two in custody, detectives subsequently served another search warrant on Leon’s Oxnard residence where two additional handguns were located. “In total, over 13,000 pills and 13 guns were seized,” Fazio reported.

Ipatzi, Barboza, and Leon were all booked into Ventura County Jail on a plethora of drug and firearms violations, with their bail amounts currently unspecified.

According to information released by the San Francisco Police department, on Wednesday, March 25th, officers patrolling the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue spotted a vehicle matching the description and license plate from a carjacking reported earlier on Shakespeare Street, in the Taraval district.

The suspects in the carjacking were said to be armed, so the officers approached the vehicle cautiously while it was stopped at an intersection. Upon seeing the officers, the driver revved the engine and accelerated in their direction. The officers were able to move out of the way, but the suspect hit their patrol car and skidded it along the road. The suspect then made a U-turn and took off.

The officers were able to get back into their banged up car and chase the suspects, who later abandoned the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. Officers observed the suspects ducking behind a parked vehicle before sprinting away. They also observed one of the suspects dropping a bag in their wake.

With the assistance of back up units, officers were able to apprehend both suspects. They also located the bag that was dropped during the chase, which revealed a camera that had been stolen during the original robbery. Returning to the parked vehicle where the suspects had momentarily ducked, officers found a 9 mm handgun jammed up into the tire well.

18-year-old Zejon Washington was arrested for carjacking, aggravated assault, weapons violations, and conspiracy charges. The accomplice was also charged, but because he was under 18-years-old, his name was not released.

VENTURA COUNTY (CrimeVoice) – With the passions of young romance forever immortalized by the words of Shakespeare in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with “The course of true love never did run smooth,” it’s clear that Ethan Gross and Melanie Hoffman, both residents of Camarillo, had a romance that exceeded the bounds of law-abiding society.

Gross had been prominently active in Ventura County as evidenced by a contemporary arrest record that included a February 27th arrest by Camarillo detectives on charges of possession of stolen property as well as identity theft and drug offenses, and was released on March 3rd after posting bail.

It comes as no surprise then that when, on March 9th, a Camarillo home owner informed the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department of a suspected burglary at his residence, thoughts ran to Hoffman and Gross, known to be romantically involved with one another. According to VCSD spokesman Sgt. Eric Tennessen, on that date the reporting resident had been away from his home and upon returning “found a door unlocked and found property in the home belonging to Ms. Hoffman.” Shortly thereafter, he realized a number of items of personal property were missing.

Possibly working on the theory that “love is blind”, VCSD patrol deputies went to Gross’s residence to conduct an authorized probation search. While Gross was not there at the time, the personal property reportedly stolen earlier that day was.

Three days later, on March 12th, Camarillo’s Special Enforcement Detail returned to the Gross residence under color of conducting another probation search. Upon their arrival, however, Gross—who clearly is not a fan of casual “drop ins”—took off on foot in a blatant attempt to avoid contact with law enforcement. His flight was shorter than anything that ever took place at Kitty Hawk, and once he was in custody, the probation search revealed an additional cache of stolen property in his residence. Ms. Hoffman was on the premises in possession of a controlled substance, and when further on-site investigation revealed that both Gross and Hoffman had been engaged in using stolen property and documents to perpetrate online financial fraud, they were both arrested and transported to Ventura County Jail where they were booked on multiple burglary and identify theft charges. Gross had his bail set at $130,000 while his paramour’s bail was set at $55,000.

SAN BERNARDINO – Sheriff’s deputies located a 24-year-old woman, reported missing by her family, and took her and four others into custody on multiple drug charges on Tuesday.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies, seeking the whereabouts of Priscylla Cass of Loma Linda wound up locating her at a nearby motel.
Just after 11 a.m. on Monday, Cass’ family had called the sheriff’s office to report her missing after showing up at her apartment.

Deputies said the family believed her apartment had been ransacked. “And they were unable to locate her,” according to a sheriff’s department release. The next morning, detectives and deputies located Cass at the Super 8 Motel, located at 225 East Hospitality Lane, a short drive from her apartment. Investigators believe that Cass was there willingly.

According to a statement, “She told deputies she was aware that her parents had reported her missing, but left her apartment on her own free will to stay with friends at the motel.”

Further investigation revealed that the people staying at the motel with Cass were in possession of drugs. In the motel room, deputies discovered suspected heroin, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Cass, along with Daphney Smith, 20, of Redlands; Evan Randell Hodge, 27, of Redlands; Maxwell David Broderick, 22, of Redlands; and Jacob Douglas Ball, 26, of Redlands, were taken into custody.

All five were arrested on drug charges, including possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Ball was scheduled to appear in San Bernardino Superior Court on Thursday. Total bail on two charges was set at $35,000. Broderick and Hodge were cited and released. No court dates have yet been set. There was no court records to indicate the status of Smith.

Man and Woman Dead in Fresno Murder/Suicide

FRESNO – A man murdered a woman and then killed himself in front of an office full of patients and staff at a downtown Fresno pediatrics office, police said.

The gunman was identified as 43-year-old Neng Moua. The victim, age 33, was not identified, but police said that she was the mother of Moua’s five children.

The incident happened Tuesday morning. Around 10:52 a.m., police were sent to the building housing Sang Pediatrics and Eye Medical Center at S and Mariposa streets after there were reports of shots being fired, authorities said.

“There were several people that were running out of the building frantically advising our officers that an Asian male had come inside of the building and was armed with a shotgun and had shot one of the employees,” Fresno Police Deputy Chief Pat Farmer said.

SWAT officers broke windows at the building to rescue people inside. Officers who went inside the building found a woman hiding in an examination room with three children. They later found Moua and the victim dead inside, according to authorities.

Moua had allegedly entered the building, where the victim worked, shot the victim and then a few minutes later, shot himself.

Police served a search warrant at Moua’s residence in the 8600 block of Shaw Avenue in Clovis later that evening and found a suicide note, but did not reveal what the note said.

Farmer called the shootings a “tragedy,” but expressed his relief that on one else was hurt in the incident.

This has been Fresno’s 12th homicide this year.

Cancer Faker Faces Charges

SAN DIEGO – Cancer may be the most dreaded diagnosis someone can hear in their lifetime.  However, for 25-year-old Chula Vista resident Meaghan Hudson, it became a means to make money off of the sympathy of others.

In the summer of 2013, Hudson began reaching out to friends and family with the tragic news that she had been diagnosed with cancer.  She told them she had severe multiple myeloma that was spreading throughout her body and had left her with a grim prognosis.  According to her ex-best-friend Chelsey Whild, “there was the understanding that at one point, she may have had less than a year to live.”

Whild hasn’t spoken to Hudson since the news of her deceit broke.

Hudson managed to collect more than $5,000 in donations from friends and family, and many of them even took their support further.  Several friends, including Chelsey Whild, shaved their heads and got tattoos that read “sing on” in honor of Hudson’s time spent in the school choir.

Chula Vista police Lieutenant Fritz Reiber said in a statement that they “believed it was just a lie that got of hand.”  Unfortunately for Hudson, her actions will come with serious consequences, and she is due in court this month on charges of theft by deception and grand theft.  If convicted, she could be forced to serve as much as 3 years of incarceration, along with having to pay back all of the money she received.

News outlets reached out to Hudson’s current roommate and asked her what she thought of the charges.  Her response was that she felt like “everyone was hating on her.”

1983 murder suspect convicted by Familial DNA

SANTA CLARA COUNTY – A Santa Clara County jury on Monday, March 23, convicted a former South Bay man for the rape and first-degree murder of a 17-year-old Campbell girl more than three decades ago.

59-year-old Christopher Melvin Holland now faces possible life in prison without parole when he is sentenced by the Honorable Arthur Bocanegra in the Superior Court of San Jose’s Hall of Justice. With a possible appeal in the works, a scheduling date for his sentencing has not yet been set. Holland has been in prison since 2007 after DNA evidence linked him to the murder of 17-year-old Cynthia Munoz. He was found hiding in his San Jose apartment complex when police arrested him after linking his brother’s Y chromosome DNA to the crime scenes of two rape and stabbing murder victims, which occurred a month apart in 1983.

“Cynthia Munoz’s family has waited 31 years to find justice for her cruel and senseless death,” prosecutor Christopher Walsh said. “Today a jury held Christopher Holland accountable for her murder, and hopefully given Cynthia’s loved ones some measure of peace.”

The District Attorney’s office has worked on bringing Munoz’s killer to justice since her August 7, 1983 brutal rape and murder, where she was found strangled and stabbed to death in the home of her disabled boyfriend in Campbell, just hours after she visited him in the hospital. The physical evidence from the crime scene strongly suggested this was a rape-murder, and DNA evidence from an unidentified person was collected. However, the forensic technology available at the time did not allow for a precise identification. The case was later pulled as a “cold case” in order to conduct DNA testing, and current scientific advancements resulted in the identification of the defendant as the primary suspect.

Although the defendant himself did not provide a DNA sample to Cold Case Investigators, his brother Kenneth provided his own DNA to investigators, which helped link Christopher to the murders. The familial DNA also provided by his half-brother David Pearman led to his own arrest in a 2001 sexual assault case.

The DNA provided by David did not link Christopher to the crime, however, it led authorities to an old rape case in which an 81-year-old San Jose woman was sexually assaulted. That rape had occurred in 2001, when 54-year-old David Leonard Holland, also known as David Pearman, had entered the woman’s home through an open door on October 10 at around 5:00 AM, slipping into her bed and then threatening to kill her if she did not perform sexual acts on him.

Evidence left at the scene and collected was later matched to David Holland, who had called a sex hotline after sexually assaulting and burglarizing the woman. She later died in 2004 of unrelated circumstances. When police were investigating Christopher Holland for the murders of Munoz and 21-year-old Tera Marowski, they were led through a familial DNA search to Christoper’s younger brother David Holland/Pearman. David willingly gave his DNA to detectives to try and match DNA evidence taken at the rape and murder scenes back in 1983. However that is when authorities learned of a new link to the 2001 sexual assault case. David Holland was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2007, that same year his half-brother Christopher Holland was arrested for the murders of the two young female victims.

During Christopher Holland’s trial, four other women had come together to testify against the defendant, who had reportedly choked them while holding a knife on them during their previously unreported rapes.

The defendant is also charged with the 1983 rape and murder of Tara Marowski, a 21-year-old San Jose woman slain four months before Munoz. This charge was severed before trial from the Munoz case, and is currently awaiting a separate trial. Marowski’s decaying nude body was found in the back seat of her 1973 Plymouth Duster on April 2, 1983 in San Jose, just blocks from the City of Campbell.

Rodney Halbower booking photo

Rodney Halbower booking photo

The killings were similar to the “Gypsy Hill” murders in the 1970’s, as 66-year-old Rodney Halbower was arrested decades later for the rape and stabbing deaths of at least two women in San Mateo County. In January 1976, 18-year-old Veronica Cascio’s body was found on Gypsy Hill Road at the Sharp Park Golf course in Pacifica. Veronica Anne Cascio was also killed nearby around the same time. Paula Louise Baxter, Tatiana Marie Blackwell, Carol Lee Booth, and Denise Lampe were also murdered around the same time in the county, and may also be linked to Halbower.

Halbower told the media that he was surprised to be named the killer. Halbower has denied any involvement in the murder of the two young women found raped and stabbed to death in Millbrae and Pacifica. DNA was collected from cigarette butts found at both murder scenes that linked Halbower to the murders.

All three men have plead not guilty, and deny their guilt in the rape and killings of these women.

HAWTHORNE, CA—Is telling a cop one is in sales, after getting arrested for grand theft auto, drug possession and the intent to sell the stolen vehicle and drugs, mean that person is going to get into stand-up comedy?

Manuel Antonio Delfin, 50, was arrested by Hawthorne police officers on Wednesday, March 25 at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Imperial Highway at Dalerose Avenue just south of the 405. The Lawndale salesman was charged with grand theft auto (487(D)PCGTA), possession of a controlled substance for sale (1378HS), transporting/selling controlled substances (11379(A)HS, taking a vehicle without owning it (10851(A)VC, receiving known stolen property/vehicle/trailer/construction equipment (496D(A)PC, possession of controlled substance paraphernalia (11364HS), identity theft involving 10 or more other persons’ identification (530.5(C)PC) and possession of a controlled substance while in possession of a firearm (11370.1AHS).

The total bail was set at $195,250. The largest single bail amount was $50,000 for the firearm possession and the lowest amount was $250 for paraphernalia possession.

Whatever he plans to do next, he’ll probably have a lot of time to hone his skills while sitting in jail.

SACRAMENTO—Police arrested a Sacramento man on Monday, March 30, following a single-vehicle crash that killed the female passenger.

The crash happened at approximately 1:45 am on San Juan Avenue just north of Palm Avenue in Fair Oaks, when Philip Michael Horch, 31, who was driving a 2000 Dodge Stratus, drifted onto the right shoulder of the road and hit a tree.

Horch and his passenger, Heather R. Barnett, were taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center where Barnett was pronounced dead. California Highway Patrol Officer Chad Hertzell said Barnett, 29, of Elk Grove, had not been wearing a seatbelt.

Horch was arrested at the hospital and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of any drug causing injury or death, violation of probation. He was also charged with carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

Horch had been arrested a year before, on March 10, 2014, for carrying a concealed, loaded and stolen firearm in a vehicle, a switchblade knife, and a narcotic controlled substance. Records show the victim, Heather Barnett, had also been arrested herself in 2014 on weapons charges, along with abuse, threats of violence, and vandalism.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, April 2.

“Spice” Sales Bust Four

Ventura County – According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. J. Hendren, the Ventura County Narcotics Task Force began an investigation in September 2014 into the traffic of “spice” throughout their jurisdiction which, on March 24th, resulted in the arrests of four suspects who were arrested pursuant to warrant searches pointing to their active involvement in the sale and possession of prescription drugs, the possession of a stolen firearm, and ten stolen slot machines.

According to Hendren, “spice is a mix of herbs, with man-made chemicals applied to it,” which produces a “mind-altering” drug with effects much stronger, and potentially more dangerous to the user than marijuana. Commonly labeled as “not for human consumption” and sold under the pretense of being a potpourri or incense product, its sellers are alleged to know that it is being abused by school-age consumers.

Based upon that suspicion, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has targeted sellers of “spice” as being in violation of laws prohibiting the sale of those active psychotropic drugs being applied to the underlying herbal product. In his report to the media, Hendren detailed the negative individual and social side effects of the use of “spice”, indicating that its use is highly addictive.

Pursuant to law enforcement reports that students at area high schools had been found to be under the influence of “spice”, exhibiting violent and irrational behaviors, Ventura County Narcotic Task Force, in conjunction with the Ventura District Attorney’s Office, the CHP, the Oxnard Police Department, the Simi Valley Police Department and the Santa Paula Police Department, began an undercover effort at more than 30 county smoke shops, resulting in sales of “spice” at nine individual locations.

Those sales resulted in search warrants at those locations, producing more than 43 pounds of “spice”, currently being analyzed by law enforcement to establish the presence of illegal compounds within the seized goods. The searches also produced the stolen guns and slot machines, resulting in the arrests of Ilias Youseef, 37, Abdo Alhaddad, 26—both of Ventura—as well as Dominic Diaz, 35, and Charlene Galvan, 30, both residents of Oxnard.

All four were booked into Ventura County Jail on charges of possession of stolen property and are held pending the outcome of the laboratory findings investigating the recovered “spice.”

Police Canine Bo scored his very first suspect in the hills of Glendora last night. After being pepper-sprayed, then thrown down a steep ravine while grabbing the arm of one of the eight members of a robbery ring, Bo jumped back up to aid the mutual agents called in from the surrounding cities. Bo’s assistance helped the four-hour operation in the Glendora Hills’ containment area cover the robbery ring’s three cars, capture the eight members, five young women and three men, and escort them to the Glendora jail.

Officer Salvage and Bo

Watch Commander Sgt. Barrett said the three-year-old rookie had been on several deployments over the first quarter of 2015 – and this was his first apprehension.

Canine handler, Officer Scott Salvage, said “Bo did a very good job during this critical operation – while thrown curve balls and multiple suspects. Afterwards, Bo is treated normally, and knows that he did what he is supposed to do. He still has a lot to learn while in the field, but the outcome is exactly what we wanted. We treated him to a home-cooked steak dinner with a lot of petting and praise.”

Meanwhile, the  people arrested were reported as April Stephan, 21, Erica Whitson, 23, Jeremiah Mitchell, 25, and Anthony Moore, 34, all charged on suspicion of burglary. (Moore was already on parole for burglary.) Caught driving in the area, apparently looking for the other four, were Bobby Bolton, 20, Courtney Adkins, 19, Paulette Gordon, 21, and Jasmine Lawrence, 21, who were all arrested on suspicion of being accessories to burglary. The eight suspects are all from Inglewood.

NORCO – Two would-be thieves had their plans foiled when they discovered that they should have brought a bigger truck to the heist.

Early in the morning on Friday, March 27, an attempted theft occurred at a business located in the 2100 block of Hamner Avenue, in the city of Norco. The business owner reported the crime, and a deputy assigned to the Norco Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation.

Through video surveillance footage, the deputy was able to ascertain that two male suspects were involved in an attempt at stealing a riding mower that was situated at the front of the business. According to a press release from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, the two suspects arrived in a two-tone-colored 1984 Chevrolet El Camino. The pair exited the vehicle and then proceeded to try to shove the lawn mower into the back of the El Camino.

When it became apparent that they were not going to be successful loading the mower, the suspects fled the location. They were last seen headed northbound on Hamner Avenue.

Fortunately, the suspects’ vehicle was conspicuous . On Tuesday, March 31, about 2:51 AM, the investigating deputy spotted the vehicle and two men believed to be the same individuals as in the video. They were parked not far from the business where the botched mower theft had occurred. The deputy detained the men and also located additional stolen property taken from the business during a second and unreported incident.

Eddie Garza, age 47, and Randy Contreras, age 52, both from Riverside, were arrested for theft, conspiracy, and possession of burglary tools. Garza was also arrested for the additional charge of violating his probation. Both suspects were booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.

SAN JOSE – On Saturday, March 21, the San Jose Police responded to a possible burglary call to 1480 West San Carlos Street. However, upon arrival it was soon discovered that the male suspect had fled the scene. It was suspected that the man had entered the Public Auto Wholesale car lot with the intent to commit theft.

The reporting party who originally called police said that they had seen the suspect jump the fence into the auto yard and check vehicles to see if their doors were open.

21-year-old Matthew Philipe Paz Jr. was located several blocks away from the scene after 9-1-1 dispatchers received another call, placing Paz at that location. When SJPD officers arrived, they quickly reacted to locate Paz, who was fighting with several people who had pulled him from one of their neighbor’s cars. He was taken into custody.

The glove box handle had been broken by the suspect when he was found rummaging through the car looking for items to steal. With vigilant neighbors able to identify the possible burglar, according to Officer Albert Morales, “Officers immediately responded as one suspect was arrested in the driveway of a nearby home.” Morales said “The suspect was booked into the County Jail.” The suspect had tried to bite the two men holding him down, but there were no injuries to be reported.  Several apparently stolen items were located in the suspect’s backpack and on his person, but the victim thought that he had only taken his DMV papers. The other items were believed to have been taken from other vehicles at the time.

Paz was charged with three counts of second degree burglary under PC 459-460(b). Paz is also facing three counts of petty theft of personal property under PC 484-488, and a misdemeanor tampering with a vehicle under VC 10852.

Matthew Paz is interviewed on ABC 7 News on March 1 following a fatal accident in San Jose, which killed one of his friends.

Matthew Paz is interviewed on ABC 7 News on March 1 following a fatal accident in San Jose, which killed one of his friends.

Paz is no stranger to law enforcement. He also has prior allegations and was out on bail for a September arrest under PC 487, grand theft, with charges filed in the Santa Clara County Superior Court. Once Paz was arrested again, the bail bonds agent submitted a motion to have his bail revoked after new charges were filed. According to police records, Paz was also arrested on February 15 for theft, petty theft, and possession of stolen property. On December 9 he was arrested by Campbell Police for possessing marijuana and toluene, a dangerous solvent sometimes abused as an inhalant.

He was also charged in September for petty theft, and twice before, in July and March, for possessing Toluene. He was also arrested on December 26, 2013 for petty theft.

Paz was interviewed just a month ago by ABC 7 News following a fatal accident that killed a friend of his. A wreck on February 28 near Rite Aid in San Jose, at Hillside and Meridian, was blamed on racing and alcohol. The victim, 14-year-old Vladimir Vargas, was a passenger, two others were also injured in the wreck, and the two drivers fled the scene.  The driver of one of the cars, a 16-year-old boy, later turned himself in, and the investigation is ongoing.

Matthew Paz’s next court date on the burglary charges has been scheduled for April 13, 2015 at 9:00 AM in Dept 33 in front of the Honorable Allison M. Danner.

Jimenez was caught in this neighborhood on Timberview Drive.

Another recent burglary arrest in the area was reported on Wednesday, March 25, when 20-year-old Omar Jimenez was charged with PC 459-460(a), a felony in which the suspect entered a home located on the 6500 block of Timberview Drive, in San Jose. But that was not the only house that Jimenez tried to enter that day. Another home located on the 6500 block of Bose Ave was also targeted by Jimenez. He was in the back yard of the home when the homeowner saw him peering through the back patio glass door. After seeing the homeowner Jimenez fled.

The homeowner called to report the suspect. Police responding to the area were able to get a description of a dark colored Green Honda, which was then located near Timberview Drive. It appeared that Jimenez had just fled after he had successfully burglarized a home close by. Police soon learned that the car had been stolen, but the owner did not know that their car was missing.

A witness near the scene screamed to officers, “He running that way!” The suspect was seen running through multiple yards to try and get away. A perimeter check was set up throughout the area. Police went home to home, eventually finding the suspect in a motor home parked in a driveway. Jimenez was taken into custody without further incident. When officers located the suspect they also found a handgun near him in the RV.

The female victim of the home burglary, after viewing the suspect in the back seat of the police cruiser said, “It looks just like him.” She said, “Yes, I think it’s him.”

Like Paz, Jimenez – also known as Omar Rosales-Jimenez – had a history of recent arrests. On September 10, 2014, Milpitas Police reported arresting him for auto theft, and possession of burglar’s tools, stolen property, and a narcotic controlled substance. He was driving a 2008 Volvo X90 and backed into a parked vehicle. The Volvo turned out to be stolen, and there was property in the car from a Los Gatos residential burglary.

Prior to that, on August 15, he was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, and a probation violation. And on June 19, he was arrested for stealing a vehicle and violating probation.

His next court date is scheduled for April 15, 2015 in Dept 34 at 1:30 PM in front of the Honorable Allison M. Danner.

Two businesses were victim to same suspect

The Paso Robles Police have a woman in custody who allegedly embezzled more than $700,000 from two local businesses.

According to PRPD, the businesses each filed a separate complaint with the department regarding possible embezzlement. One of the businesses is a non-profit and the other is a manufacturing business.

“The victim businesses were Make It Manufacturing and Paso Robles Youth Sports,” said PRPD Detective Sergeant Tod Rehner. “We filed on the loss from Make It, but are still going through financials for the non-profit.”

The businesses alleged that a mutual bookkeeper, Deanna Serda, 56 of Paso Robles, may have been embezzling funds from the businesses between 2008 and 2014.

After an extensive investigation, PRSD detectives served search warrants on Serda’s residence and bank accounts. They searched several hundred financial documents and were able to corroborate a significant loss via embezzlement from both of the businesses. Investigators from the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney assisted in the review of the documents.

The team concluded the financial documents revealed probable cause that Serda embezzled more than $700,000 from the manufacturing company alone. Investigators say the evidence demonstrates Serda allegedly forged more than 450 financial documents to facilitate the embezzlement. In late March, PRPD detectives secured a felony arrest warrant for Serda.

Serda subsequently turned herself in to the PRPD on March 20, and was transported and booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail, with bail set at $1,200,000. Serda was charged with felony forgery, a criminal enhancement of denial of probation for thefts exceeding $100,000, a criminal enhancement for taking property more than $50,000 and a criminal enhancement of aggravated white-collar crime more than $100,000.

“[Serda] did not own an accounting business; she was independent/self-employed,” Rehner said. When asked if any of the money was recovered, Rehner said, “Zero of the funds have been recovered, but we are serving restraining orders that essentially freeze all assets.”

Johnson’s funeral procession, led by SJPD’s top brass and local, county and state law enforcement agencies, proceeded down North Santa Cruz Boulevard in Los Gatos toward the City of Campbell, Santa Clara County, and through the city of San Jose, to eventually rest at the SAP Center. After the memorial service, his body was laid to rest at the Oak Hill Memorial Park on Curtner Avenue in San Jose during a private ceremony held for close friends and family members.

The Town of Los Gatos Police Department joined in the procession. This was the first time that the Town of Los Gatos had participated in providing support for the Memorial Service of a fallen officer who had been killed in the line of duty.

Like many employees that work with the community, the killing of SJPD Officer Johnson by Scott Dunham during a distress call by a family member has affected thousands throughout the city, state, and country, along with the Bay Area.

One fire fighter with Santa Clara County Fire Department said, “They have our full support”. Santa Clara County Fire Department Mechanic Phil Taylor said, “I think it affects everyone on a personal level.” Taylor said, “You hate to see something like this happen.”

The streets were lined with Flags streamed by local community and law enforcement service members. There were also children who were able to watch the procession safely from the sidewalk near their school at St. Lucy Catholic Parish Church. One parent said, “I think it is good that they are honoring him.” She said, “We think it is really sad, that’s why we are out here doing this.”

With more than 8000 attendants at the memorial service, parking was spread throughout the area as mourners both walked and drove to attend the service.

Menlo Park Police Officer Scott Solis said, “Death did not make you a hero.” Solis is a former San Jose police officer who graduated with Johnson from the San Jose police academy in 2001. “You where already a hero while you lived.” Solis said “I truly believe Mike is looking down on us right now, so I would like us to give Mike a standing ovation for the life that he gave to us.”

SJPD Chief of Police Larry Esquivel also spoke. “As a police chief, you never want to get that call” Esquivel said. “On March 24, 2015, I got that call.” Like so many others working with the San Jose Police Department, the loss of Johnson has sharpened the bond between officers. Esquivel said “The state of the San Jose Police Department is strong, and that’s because of officers like Michael.”

California Attorney General Kamala Harris spoke, saying “He gave 14 years of his life to the most noble of professions.” Harris said, “Johnson’s death underscores the inherent risks police face every day they put on a uniform.” Harris talked about how when working with the community, there are often times that “safety comes at a supreme price, and that price must always be remembered by a grateful state and her people.” Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen said, “There’s nothing that could have been done differently except not respond to the call.”

Johnson’s older sister Jamie Radack spoke about Michael in a kind and loving way in remembrance of their growing up together. “I knew he would grow up to become a cop,” Radack said. “Mike, we do not only miss you, but you have left emptiness in our lives that cannot be filled.” Radack said that “Mike was always genuine, always honest, always trustworthy, always loyal, always there for his friends.”

The Paso Robles Police are looking for a suspect who allegedly robbed Payless Shoe Source store at gunpoint.

According to the PRPD, they received a call on Sunday around 5 p.m. regarding a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at the Payless store located on the 100 block of Niblick Road.

When officers arrived, someone reported that a lone, male suspect walked into the store and appeared to employees to be shopping. The suspect did this for a few minutes before approaching the counter. An employee witness said the suspect began to participate in a regular transaction with the employee and then pulled up his shirt to reveal a handgun in his waistband.

The employee said the suspect then demanded money from the employee. The employee complied with the armed robber’s demands and turned over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect.

The witnesses said the suspect walked out of the business after taking the money, and fled in a white four-door sedan westbound on Niblick Road. The suspect is described as a white male adult in his 30s, about 5’10” and 240 pounds. He was clean-shaven with blonde-colored hair. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and gray cargo style shorts.

He was later identified as 40-year-old Kelly Shawn Grimm, wanted for a series of robberies in Salinas, Sand City and King City. The license plate number in his white Toyota Camry is 5AJR595.

Out of Jail for a Week, Busted Again

Santa Barbara County – Some people just don’t know when to quit. By all appearances, Ronald Carrari, a 56-year old resident of Los Alamos, is one of those people.

On March 20th, Carrari was the central figure in an armed standoff at his home where he had reportedly made threats against a family member, and refused to speak with or face responding Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department deputies. His stubborn stance resulted in law enforcement completely shutting down U.S. Highway 101 for a period of several hours, out of what SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover characterized as official concern “about his ability to hurt himself or others.”

That confrontation ended when SBSD SWAT units managed to fill Carrari’s home with tear gas and flush him out. The subsequent search of the residence revealed a large cache of weapons, including guns, knives, ammunition, and no less than seven swords. At the time, Carrari was charged on multiple weapons violations, as well as resisting arrest and making criminal threats.

Pursuant to his March 24th release from custody, Carrari was served with a temporary restraining order “protecting a family member,” Hoover reported. But it was just four days later that Carrari reportedly constructed “a cart or shrine with threatening messages and depictions” of his prospective victim. As deputies were removing the property from public view, Carrari was observed nearby and arrested on charges of making criminal threats and of violating a court order.

Carrari was summarily transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where he was booked with his bail set at $1,000,000.
