Bautista, who works as a horse trainer for the Green Valley Training Center in Chowchilla, was pulled over late at night with an unidentified child in the vehicle. Bautista has been charged with DUI before, but this time the added charge of child endangerment, which results from the mere presence of a child when caught driving under the influence, adds a felony to his list of offenses, and will likely result in a much stricter sentence if convicted.

Bail for the felony charge was set at $10,000. He was released on bond after being booked at the Madera Department of Corrections.

Santa Barbara DUI Driver Tries to Run

Santa Barbara – Santa Barbara’s Lower Westside neighborhood can be a difficult area to navigate by car, even when cold sober during daylight, as it is laced with narrow early-20th Century lanes and avenues, where passing another car and maneuvering around legally parked cars at curbside can be a challenge.

Imagine then, the difficulty of driving down those narrow, congested streets in the dark of night while inebriated at twice the legal blood alcohol. Such appears to have been the case on the night of March 31st when Brenda C. Jauregui-Salinas, a 21-year old resident of Goleta, slammed her gray Dodge Charger into an oncoming Jeep Cherokee being driven by a 36-year old Santa Barbara man.

According to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Sgt. Riley Harwood, “she drifted into the wrong side of the roadway”, made full contact with the Jeep, and then promptly alighted from her vehicle and “fled on foot”. She was making a clean getaway until she was apprehended just two blocks distant from the accident site.

SBPD officers responding to the scene located a pair of witnesses to the accident who made a positive identification of Jauregui-Salinas as the driver of the errant Dodge. In the course of their standard DUI investigation, the 21-year old woman rang the bell on the breathalyzer with a reading double the legal limit, at .16% blood alcohol level.

Jauregui-Salinas was then transported to Santa Barbara County Jail where she was booked on charges of DUI with her bail set at $5000.

Jauregui-Salinas, who turned 21 in January, was arrested on May 17 of last year when she was 20 for being a minor in possession of alcohol, and entering and remaining in an establishment that sells alcoholic beverages as a minor. According to a police report, she was arrested at an event in the Casa De La Raza cultural center on Montecito Street in Santa Barbara at 11 pm that Saturday night. No further details of that incident were available.

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office has a man in custody for allegedly possessing and distributing child pornography.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives with the Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement (SAFE) team served a search warrant at a home in the 2900 block of Little Creek Lane in Paso Robles on Tuesday at around 8:30 a.m.

Sheriff’s detectives had received information that child pornography was being downloaded and distributed from a computer at that residence. Detectives served the warrant, seized computers, external hard drives and thumb drives, which contained several hundred images and videos of pre-pubescent children engaged in sexual acts.

The images appear to have been downloaded from the internet and then distributed. The seized electronics will be forensically analyzed for child pornography. Detectives arrested Eugene Virgil Rominger, 51, of Paso Robles on one count of possession of child pornography and one count of distribution of child pornography.

Rominger was taken into custody and booked into SLO County Jail.

BERMUDA DUNES — A second suspect and a juvenile were arrested on Thursday in conjunction with a robbery that was committed in March.

Two suspects reportedly assaulted a man who was on an evening walk in Bermuda Dunes, a small town between Palm Desert and Indio, on Monday, March 16. The victim reported that he did not know the two men who physically assaulted him. The victim’s belongings were taken by force by the two armed suspects, who then fled the scene in a vehicle. When deputies from the Riverside Sheriff’s Department responded to the crime, they were unable to locate the men described. Following the crime, officers assigned to the Coachella Valley Violent Crime Gang Task Force (Gang Task Force), assumed the investigation.

The investigation that followed was lengthy and extensive. Members from the Coachella Valley Violent Gang Task Force authored and served two search warrants in the 46-000 block of Clinton Street in the city of Indio.  On Thursday, March 26, the first warrant was served, and it was followed by a second search warrant that was served on Thursday, April 2, and netted two arrests.

During the search on April 2, a .38-caliber revolver, sawed-off shotgun and ammo were seized.  The items found resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old juvenile along with Christopher James Crowell, age 22 of Indio.

The 17-year-old juvenile was transported to the Indio Juvenile Hall where he was booked for robbery and possession of a short-barreled shotgun. Christopher James Crowell was transported to the Riverside County jail in Indio and booked for robbery and possession of an unregistered firearm.

The Gang Task Force encourages residents to contact them if have they have non-emergency information regarding gang activity. Community members can use the online Gang Task Force Tip Form or call 951-922-7601.

Bonnie & Clyde Bank Robbers Caught 17 Minutes Later

Carpinteria – “The Official Rules for Successfully Robbing a Bank” should probably include the following: 1) Never rob a bank during commuter rush hour. 2) Never rob a bank and then escape on a freeway where no offramps exist for 15 miles. 3) Never rob a bank in an easily-identified newer car with six cylinders or less.

These fundamentals were clearly ignored on the morning of March 31st when, at 9:00 a.m. Terry Ray Hornbeck, 53, and Mary Lee Johnson, 49, both Los Angeles residents, who had perhaps mistakenly thought themselves akin to a modern-day Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow of movie dialogue “we rob banks” fame, strolled into the Carpinteria branch of Chase Bank. After relieving the bank tellers of their cash, the pair then drove away in what Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Butch Arnoldi described as “a newer model silver Hyundai”.

The sad fact of the matter is that escape routes from that bank are few and far between. There is, in fact, only one direction of travel if one intends to vacate the area before the arrival of any law enforcement personnel, and it leads directly onto the U.S. 101 southbound in the direction of Ventura, some 20 miles distant. As if the vehicular congestion and constant pedestrian traffic at that hour wasn’t challenging enough, the fact that there are very few offramps leading away from that freeway heading southbound certainly made any successful flight doubtful.

Proof of that came when the suspect vehicle was promptly spotted by a passing patrol deputy from the SBSD Carpinteria Sheriff Station just blocks away from the targeted bank, whereupon the deputy followed the Hyundai pending the arrival of additional law enforcement units. Just seventeen minutes after the robbery, units from the SBSD, the Ventura County Sheriff, and the CHP conducted what Arnoldi referred to as a “high risk stop” of the vehicle, and promptly took Hornbeck and Johnson into custody. Hornbeck was found to be in possession of brass knuckles and an undisclosed amount of cocaine, as well as evidence of the robbery.

Both Hornbeck and Johnson were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail and booked on charges of bank robbery, where they’re currently held on $100,000 bail.

A Madera woman has been arrested by the Madera Police Department last Thursday, March 26, according to the Madera County Department of Corrections. Melinda Davis, 50, was brought in on two counts of unlawful camping, one count of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or co-habitant (domestic violence), assault with a deadly weapon, threatening crime with intent to terrorize, and obstructing or interfering with an officer. Davis was booked at 2:45 in the afternoon.

According to sources, Davis is currently unemployed, and her listed address appears to be a vacant lot. It was not specified in the report if she was camping on this lot, or at another location.

This was not her first brush with the law. Sources show she was arrested in 2010 for prostitution, providing false identification to an officer, and a parole violation. She was arrested again in 2012 for domestic abuse, vandalism, probation violations, and post release community supervision violations. In April of 2013 she was charged with interfering with a business customer. Further details of those incidents were not available.

Bail has been set at $90,000.

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for allegedly sexually assaulting a disabled juvenile Los Osos girl.

According to the sheriff’s office, they received a call on Friday, March 27 around 2:10 p.m. from a local hospital regarding a report of a 16-year-old developmentally disabled girl who had been sexually assaulted the night before at a home in the 1200 block of 11th Street in Los Osos.

The victim reported she had gone to a friend’s home to to spend the night. Investigators say at approximately 9 p.m., the girl’s friend, the friend’s mother, grandmother and brother all went to bed.

At the same time, the victim went to the couch in the living room for the night. Police say the father of the friend, identified as Steve James Linzmeier, 57 of Los Osos, was in the living room watching television. Investigators claim at some point during the night, Linzmeier went over to the girl and sexually assaulted her.

Linzmeier was arrested on multiple charges, including rape by force, child molestation and committing a violent crime against a person who is disabled. He was transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail, and his bail is $175,000.

Suspect ditched Firearm in Backyard

WATSONVILLE—The Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Task Force arrested known gang participant and Watsonville resident 21-year-old Marcial Arana Castillo after he was spotted by agents driving a vehicle that had a faulty taillight.

On Friday, April 3rd, agents with the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Task Force were patrolling in the area of Freedom Boulevard and South Green Valley Road in Watsonville when they noticed a vehicle driving with a faulty taillight. They noticed that the driver of the vehicle was a documented gang participant who was on probation.

Agents tried to pull over the vehicle on the violation, and they initiated a traffic stop in the area of the Home Depot store on South Green Valley Road. Castillo pulled into the shopping center, however he ignored the officers and passed several parking stalls. He then pulled over, but as he came to a stop, he bolted from the vehicle.

Castillo ran from Home Depot across Loma Prieta to the residential neighborhood.

Castillo ran from Home Depot across Loma Prieta to the residential neighborhood.

The agents gave chase, and followed Castillo on foot in the area of Loma Prieta Drive and Holly Drive. Officers caught up with Castillo after he took them through a residential obstacle course, jumping over several fences. Castillo was then taken into custody without further incident.

A resident of one of the homes that Castillo ran through called the Watsonville police to report that he had just found a firearm in his backyard. They thanked God that the two children who lived at the residence were not playing in the yard when the incident took place.

Evidence found at the scene and on Castillo led police to charge him with being a felon in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a gang participant, probation violations, participating in a criminal street gang, and delaying or obstructing a peace officer.

The firearm had been reported stolen two weeks ago in a burglary in the City of Watsonville.

Records show that Castillo was arrested in December of 2013 for burglary, which he was also charged with in March of 2013 and October of 2012.

Ventura – If you’re going to be sneaking around in residential neighborhoods looking for cars to burglarize or steal, it might be a good idea not to be doing it at 4:30 in the morning, where any activity is likely to alert neighbors and their barking dogs.

But in the pre-dawn hours of March 29th, that is apparently what Gregory Ledbetter, 24, Melissa Zeir, 32, and an unnamed juvenile were attempting to do when Ventura Police Department 911 Emergency Operators received a homeowner call reporting what is described in the SPD Watch Commander’s report as “suspects casing vehicles in the area,” and that they were “checking door handles on vehicles parked both on the street and in the driveways of homes in the area.”

With VPD officers responding and enroute, however, the three suspects boarded a waiting vehicle and drove away, apparently departing the neighborhood as quickly as possible. As things go at that hour of the night, however, a speeding vehicle is easily seen driving down residential streets, and just blocks away a routine patrol unit spotted the vehicle, conducted a traffic stop, and made contact with Ledbetter, Zeir, and the juvenile, whom they detained at the scene.

Pursuant to positive identification by the witnesses reporting having seen active auto tampering on their street and a search of their vehicle, the three suspects were found to be in possession of a loaded firearm as well as several items suspected to be stolen property.

All three were arrested at the scene and transported to Ventura County Jail, where Ledbetter was booked on charges of conspiracy, vehicle tampering, possession of narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia. Zeir, found to be driving on a suspended license, was cited for the violation and the vehicle was summarily impounded. The unidentified male juvenile was booked into Ventura County Juvenile Detention Center and charged with conspiracy, vehicle tampering, possession of a loaded firearm, and on a juvenile warrant.

RANCHO CORDOVA: Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified a man who was killed by gunfire on Friday morning, April 3, as Michael Elder, 49.

The Sacramento Sheriff’s office reported that a dog walker discovered Elder lying lifeless on the sidewalk at around 7:15 in the morning near the corner of Egmont Way and Viking Road, in a residential neighborhood south of Highway 50 near Bradshaw Road. Police declared dead Elder dead at the scene.

Detectives are investigating Elder’s death as a homicide. There are no witnesses at this point and no motive has been identified. Some residents of the Rancho Cordova neighborhood said they woke up after hearing gunshots.

“It was around two in the morning. My husband and I heard ‘pow pow pow’,” said a man who lives in the neighborhood. “It was like six shots. Then you hear screeching, like people doing donuts on the streets. I didn’t hear anything else afterwards.”

“We did see a great deal of blood around the body,” said Sgt. Lisa Bowman of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. “We contacted the fire department, who came out to check on the subject.”

Family says Elder, who suffers from a mild physical and mental disability, was visiting a friend. They have no idea why he would be the target of a homicide.

“He bothered nobody,” family friend James Nelson said. ”I don’t know what happened last night. But he was a good friend and I talked about the Lord with him. All we have to do is pray for him.”

Elder is survived by his two sisters, Joanne Young and Diane Smith.

SAN BERNARDINO – A man who tried to run over two police officers on Saturday afternoon was tracked down, arrested and booked later that night. Terrance Jamal Cummings, 27, has two court dates this week on various charges – on Monday and another on Tuesday, according to booking records.

At 5:35 p.m. on Saturday, two unidentified San Bernardino police officers were concluding an investigation when the pair walked across the street to their police vehicle. According to reports, both officers heard a nearby car engine revving up, then watched a black BMW heading toward them at a high speed. While the officers were able to get out of the way, they were also able to quickly get into their car and chase Cummings. The incident first occurred in the 1500 block of East Pumalo St.

Cummings, according to reports, ran a stop sign and sped down the street in an effort to avoid police. Officers lost sight of the car in the 2300 block of North Osbun Road, but later discovered its whereabouts in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

Cummings was eventually found inside an apartment, and arrested for attempted murder of the two officers. A search warrant was presented for both the apartment and the car, which was towed to police headquarters for processing, according to reports. Cummings was also ordered to provide a blood sample because police believed he was intoxicated.

Cummings was booked into the San Bernardino County Jail for two counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, and his case has been forward to the district attorney’s office for review.

He is currently being held on $1 million bail, plus another $25,000 bail for driving while under suspicion of being intoxicated. Other charges include being actively involved with a criminal street gang and resisting arrest. Cummings’ first appearance in court was set for Monday, while another was scheduled on Tuesday.

Card Scanning ID Thieves Busted

Ventura  – While the media airwaves are filled every day with warnings to consumers about the constant threat of identify theft and credit card fraud, those who perpetrate such crimes appear just as energetic about their daily business as well.

Dawn Marie Zolman

Dawn Marie Zolman

Evidence of that appeared in the City of Thousand Oaks when, in the mid-afternoon of March 31st, a Thousand Oaks Police Special Enforcement Unit detective just happened to be driving through the area’s commercial district when he spotted Terry Oliphant, a 44-year old resident of Oxnard whom the cop recognized as an individual currently on probation and subject to search. According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Dan Hawes, the search of Oliphant’s vehicle revealed “a billy club and tools commonly used during burglaries.”

Apparently intrigued by the contents of Oliphant’s car, detectives were then summoned to Oliphant’s hotel room where he was residing nearby. The search of the hotel room proved to be something of a treasure trove of evidence including “a credit card scanning device and a notebook that contained credit card and pin numbers for multiple victims.”

Just an hour later, detectives made contact with three other individuals: Dawn Marie Zolman, 39, believed to be residing at the hotel with Oliphant, Jose Jesus Cardenas, a 31-year old Camarillo resident, and Matthew Jesus Cardona, 29, hailing from nearby Oxnard. As detectives identified themselves to the trio, Cardenas dropped a glass pipe “commonly used to ingest narcotics,” which led even further inquiry on the part of the detectives.

It was soon determined that all these folks lived at the same hotel, whereupon a search of their digs revealed additional credit card scanning devices and another notebook filled with credit card and pin numbers. Oliphant, Cardona, and Zolman were arrested on the scene and transported to Ventura County Jail where they were booked on a plethora of charges, including fraudulent use of a credit card scanning device, possession of personal information, obtaining credit in another person’s name, fraudulent use of an access card, possession of burglary tools, and conspiracy. Cardenas was cited for possession of an opium pipe; he was released at the scene, presumably to enroll in the nearest graduate school of economics…or not.

Reeder was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, though no injuries occurred to either driver. Deputies from the Central Station, located in Loma Linda, responded to reports of road rage driving when a motorist reported a black Dodge Charger was attempting to ram a blue Volkswagen off the road along Redlands Blvd.

Deputies were able to respond to the incident near Mead Street and Mountain View Avenue, where the two vehicles were stopped.

Investigation revealed that Reeder and the unidentified victim had been having a domestic dispute before the incident. Reeder, said deputies, “intentionally sideswiped the victim’s car, trying to get him to stop his vehicle.” Moderate damage was done to both cars, according to reports.

Reeder was taken to Central Detention Center and eventually released shortly before midnight. No court date has yet been assigned, according to booking information.

According to records, it has not yet been determined if the case will be filed as a misdemeanor, which carries a year’s sentence in jail, or a felony, which carries a sentence of anywhere between two and four years in state prison.

Vehicle Was Spotted By A Friend Of The Owner

SALINAS—The Salinas Police Department arrested 26-year-old Salinas resident Elizar Uribe and 30-year-old Ismael Reymundo for vehicle theft after they were spotted driving a vehicle that was reported stolen four days prior.

On Thursday March 26, a 2007 Jeep Cherokee was reported stolen from an apartment complex on West Alvin Drive in the North Area of Salinas. Four days later a friend of the owner spotted the jeep driving southbound on North Main Street near Alvin Drive, which is approximately two blocks from where it was stolen.

He called the Police and provided them with a description and the direction of travel. A Salinas Police officer spotted the vehicle heading west on West Laurel Drive, heading towards Highway 101.

After seeing the police, instead of heading to the Highway, the driver, identified as Uribe, turned on to Adams Drive, abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. He was captured after a short foot chase.

Reymundo ran to Polk Street and tried to hide, but was spotted by many.

Reymundo ran to Polk Street and tried to hide, but was spotted by many.

The passenger, identified as Reymundo, also made a run for it, and was chased for several blocks and over fences of nearby residences. Police conducted a yard-to-yard search, and thanks to several witnesses in the area, the suspect was tracked to the garage of a home on Polk Street.

The owner of the home did not know Reymundo, but did not want to prosecute him for trespassing. He was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, being in possession of methamphetamine and providing false information to a peace officer.

Uribe was booked in the Monterey County Jail on charges of driving a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest and violation of probation. He was on probation for vehicle theft.

Police Arrest Child Stealing Suspect After 90-Mile Chase

ONTARIO – A 90-mile car chase down a major interstate freeway led to the arrest of a man who was suspected of stealing a child on Sunday.

Reaching speeds of up to 100 miles-an-hour, a long stream of law enforcement chased him eastbound from Ontario, where an Ontario police officer had tried to pull him over for speeding, according to reports.

Pablo Lopez Velasquez, 37, was taken into custody at nearly midnight. But it wasn’t until after Velasquez was stopped in far away Indio, in neighboring Riverside County, that police discovered the suspect had taken a 10-year-old girl earlier that day, according to reports. She had been returned home before the chase began.

The girl, who was returned to her family unharmed, may have left voluntarily with the suspect, said police. That changed the crime from a potential kidnapping to child stealing. Reportedly the girl, who had an argument with her family, walked away from her Ontario home at 9 a.m. that day. Police are investigating why the family waited so long before reporting her missing.

Police said the girl reported that she and Velasquez spent time shopping at eating at local restaurants, adding that nothing inappropriate occurred during their time together.

When the girl’s family reported her missing on Sunday afternoon, it led to an intensive police search. Investigators identified the suspect as a man who was a family acquaintance in his 30s, which turned out to be Velasquez. She had been returned home by 9 p.m., said police.

When the suspect was first spotted at around 10 pm near Holt Boulevard and Vineyard Avenue in Ontario, the officer tried to pull him over. According to reports, he refused to stop, got onto Interstate 10 heading east, and fled from police.

The man, who was booked in the West Valley Detention Center, also attacked an officer during the booking process, said police. He is facing charges of concealing a minor from a parent, resisting arrest and felony evading. Jail records show bail at $100,000. The chase from Ontario, located in the west end of San Bernardino County, covered 90 miles before police caught the suspect in Indio.

Suspect Struggled With Police Before Being Taken Into Custody

HOLLISTER—The Hollister Police arrested a robber who wore a hockey mask to rob the City Gas Station on Third Street and San Benito Avenue. Ramiro Ramos Jr. was identified as the suspect who wore a Halloween type mask.

On Saturday, March 14, officers responded to the City Gas Station on a report of an in-progress robbery. The information that they received was that the suspect, perhaps inspired by previous day’s date of Friday, March 13, was described as wearing a hockey type mask like Jason from the “Friday the 13th” movies.

Ramos was spotted near Jerry's Restaurant.

Ramos was spotted near Jerry’s Restaurant.

According to the clerk, Ramos entered the business and said that he had a gun in his waistband and demanded money, and later demanded some lottery tickets too. The clerk complied with the suspect’s demands, and Ramos left.

Hollister Police Officers were in the area at the time of the call, and they spotted the suspect near Jerry’s Restaurant, which is approximately a block north from the original crime scene. As officers moved in to arrest Ramos, he struggled with them before being taken into custody. He was eventually detained and arrested.

Hollister Police found a large sum of money and lottery tickets on Ramos when he was arrested. They also found the “Jason Voorhees” style hockey mask and related items where he was arrested.

Ramiro Ramos Jr. and Marcus Alexander Orozco in their January booking photos.

Ramiro Ramos Jr. and Marcus Alexander Orozco in their January booking photos.

Ramos was booked at the San Benito County Jail on charges of robbery and resisting arrest. He also had an outstanding warrant.

Just two months prior, on January 22, he and Marcos Alexander Orozco were charged with attempted felony robbery and conspiracy. Ramos had entered the Quik Stop market on San Juan Road demanding money, and of course lottery tickets. When the clerk did not comply, he ran to Orozco’s waiting car and they fled. When tracked down and arrested by responding Hollister police, Ramos was also charged with misdemeanor battery on a peace officer, and Orozco was charged with damaging a jail facility. They apparently did not go peacefully.

Prior to that incident, Ramos was arrested on Christmas Eve and on August 24 for DUI, and on August 20 for public intoxication.

The Hollister Police are asking anyone with information on the case to please call the department at 831-636-4330.
