Stockton – Officers from two different agencies shot and killed an armed robbery suspect after he attempted to run over the officers. The dead man, who has been identified as Gary Allen Hawkins, 33, of Stockton, tried to use the stolen vehicle to run over the officers after they pulled him over in a Mercedes.
The officers involved were assigned to the Countywide Gang Task Force that had been searching for the silver Mercedes Benz sedan which had been reportedly involved in an armed robbery on Cardinal Avenue the day before.
The officers, one a Stockton police officer, the other a San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputy, had pulled over the vehicle on the 200 block of Adelbert Avenue Saturday evening, February 23. Both officers fired on the vehicle and shot and killed the driver. When they pulled the driver from the car, officers found a loaded handgun in the man’s waistband.
At 9 pm, upon arrival at the hospital, the suspect was pronounced dead .
Both officers were uninjured by the incident. The officers were put on three days administrative leave, a standard procedure, while a multi agency investigation is conducted into the shooting.

Area Law enforcement agencies participated in sweep

HOLLISTER—San Benito County Law Enforcement Agencies conducted several unannounced early morning compliance checks on 25 parolees within the city limit of Hollister on Friday Feb. 22 beginning at approximately 6 a.m.

“We do about three of these kinds of sweeps a year.” Hollister Police Captain Dave Westrick said.

During the operation, agencies that included The California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation, State Parole, Unified Narcotic Enforcement team (UNET), San Benito Sheriff Department and the Hollister Police Department arrested Jessie Drewrey, 25, and Katherine Russell, 22, both of Hollister for warrants from out of county.

They also arrested Frank Stephenson, 35, Rudy Miramon, 25, Francisco Ruiz, 39, and David Ramirez, 31, for being in violation of their parole conditions.  Jason Castro, 30, also of Hollister was the seventh individual swept up by authorities on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia (which is a felony while out on bail).

“What would be a great thing, is to do one of these sweeps and arrest no one.” Westrick added,” It would be nice if everyone was in compliance.”

This was a joint operation between state and local law enforcement agencies to help curb the recent rise of violent crime within Hollister.  These agencies are committed to working together to combat gang violence that affects so many innocent individuals within Hollister and the Central Coast area.

The Hollister Police Department “would like to remind the community that if you have information on gang related activity you can always contact the department’s gang officer at 831-636-4330 ext 132.  If you would like to remain anonymous you may call WeTip at 800-78-CRIME.  Information provided to WeTip may qualify for a reward.”

Sleeping Man Arrested for Drugs

“Mr. Sleepy,” as the police called him.

Canyon Hodge

Owning a business can be extremely tiring, especially if the business is illegal. In fact, Canyon Hodge of Eureka, a drug dealer and a parolee, was so tired after a busy day that he fell asleep in his own car with his products ready for sale next to him.

According to the police, Hodge was discovered by the locals who reported “a suspicious male in a vehicle” to the Eureka Police Department on Sunday, February 24, at around 4:19 pm. The witnesses reported that Hodge was “making strange movements and appeared to be falling asleep” with a roll of cash on his lap.

When an officer arriver at the reported location, he indeed found Hodge fast asleep in his Nissan Maxima in front of a local business. In addition to the big roll of cash on the passenger’s seat, Hodge has a large bag of heroin on his lap as he was resting.

These are just few of the items EPD seized from Hodge

The officer took the time to awaken the sleepy businessman, who was highly under the influence of heroin, and searched him along with his vehicle. During the search, police found all the tools and products of Hodge’s illegal business including 43 grams of heroin, about 3 grams of meth, some marijuana, and, of course, digital scale, written records of Hodge’s sales, over $3,000 of cash, and his drug use equipment.

The officers took Hodge, a victim of his own product, into custody and seized all of his belonging, including the vehicle, which was towed from the scene. He was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, where he will hopefully get a break from his stressful job and is being held for possession and transportation of a controlled substance for sale, possession of drug paraphernalia, and parole violation.

Elementary School Janitor in Visalia Arrested for Lewd Acts

VISALIA – Police arrested a Visalia school janitor for inappropriately touching two students at the school.

Antonio Cordova

Antonio Cordova, 30, was taken into custody on Tuesday on suspicion of lewd acts against two students at Oak Grove Elementary School in northwest Visalia. The alleged victims are both girls, ages 10 and 8, authorities said.

The investigation into Cordova began after school on Monday when two students – not the victims – told a teacher about “uncomfortable situations” with Cordova. The teacher then notified the school principal, according to authorities.

The school put Cordova on administrative leave and began conducting an internal investigation. After another student reported an inappropriate incident with Cordova from a month ago, the school called the police.

Interviews with two girls determined that there was inappropriate contact and Cordova was arrested, police said.

The Visalia Unified School District automated phone call notified parents that an employee had been placed on administrative leave.

Cordova has been a janitor with Oak Grove Elementary for four or five years. He is being held at the Tulare County Main Jail.

Police are worried that there may be other victims. The case is still under investigation and parents should talk to their children and call police if they suspect inappropriate contact occurred.

Sleeping burglar arrested in stolen car

IRVINE – Irvine police officers arrested 18-year-old Brent Michael Brodie while he slept in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday morning.

Brent Michael Brodie was sleeping Tuesday morning when he was arrested

A resident reported a suspicious vehicle parked in the neighborhood, according to a press release from Irvine PD. Officers responding to the call at 7 am found Brodie asleep in the car, which turned out to be a reported stolen car. Items found in the car linked Brodie to five residential burglaries in the past month, in addition to another stolen vehicle. The burglaries he is suspected of were in south Irvine and Newport Beach. It appeared that Bordie , who lists his residence as north-east Irvine, may have been living out of his car at the time of his arrest.

Investigators believe that Brodie would try to find out if a house was empty, and then enter through an unlocked ground floor window. In addition to stealing valuables from the homes, he would search for car keys, which allowed him to steal the cars without forcible  entry.

Detectives recovered stolen property that still needs to be identified. It is possible that Brodie committed more than the 5 identifiable burglaries he is currently charged with. Laptop computers, designer handbags and jewelry, and even a solid gold watch, possibly worth $20,000 or more, are among the items recovered from Brodie.

The Irvine police ask anyone with any additional information, or who believes they may be a victim of the burglaries, to contact the department at 949-724-7200. Irvine PD Spokesperson Lieutenant Julia Engven would also like to remind the community of the value in reporting any suspicious activity. Without the initial reports, Brodie may still be at work today on the next victim.

Department morns their colleagues

SANTA CRUZ—On Tuesday, at 3:30 p.m. investigators with the Santa Cruz Police Department went to the 800 block of North Branciforte Drive on an investigation.  Detectives were there to question 35-year-old Jeremy Peter Goulet, of Berkeley, who was arrested last Friday on disorderly conduct charges.

Loren 'Butch' Baker

Elizabeth Butler

At some time during their investigation, after a conversation at the door with the suspect, shots were fired.  With the investigators lying mortally wounded outside the apartment, both the Santa Cruz Police Department and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department’s began to converge on the scene in an attempt to lockdown the area.

Thirty minutes into the lockdown procedure, officers from the Santa Cruz Police Department as well as the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department encountered an armed man wearing body armor.

Believing that they had the suspect cornered, police converged on Doyle Street as Goulet opened fire on the officers.  It was in that haul of gunfire that authorities believed that Jeremy Goulet’s life came to an end, and he was killed in the gunfight.

As authorities were busy gathering evidence in this incident the Santa Cruz County Coroner’s Office pronounced the two detectives dead.  They were identified as 28-year veteran Detective Loren ’Butch’ Baker and 10-year veteran Detective Elizabeth Butler.

“This is a very horrific day in my career,” Santa Cruz Police Chief Kevin Vogel said. “Our department is mourning the lost of our brother Butch and our sister Elizabeth. It is the darkest day in this department’s history.”

This is the first time in the department’s 147-year history that an officer has been killed in the line of duty.

Jeremy Goulet

The suspect in the case, Jeremy Goulet, had an extensive criminal history in Oregon.  He served time in jail for sex crimes

The Santa Cruz Police Department is still investigating this case and is asking anyone with information to call them at 831-420-5800 or their Anonymous Tip Line 831-420-5995.

A man faces new charges this week for attempted homicide in the Jan 19th attack of a man during five day robbery spree in the City of San Jose.

Miguel Marez

19-year-old Miguel Marez, 18-year old Ezra Santana, and 18-year-old James Palmerson are also being charged with kidnapping, a home invasion robbery, and multiple armed robberies.  Together they had assaulted and robbed several female victims during Jan 19 – 20.  Their crimes had escalated with the attempted kidnapping and home invasion robbery in the Alameda area of San Jose on January 24th.

On January 19th in an attempt to commit a robbery under PC 211-212.5(c) Marez, Santana and Palmerson of San Jose are also accused of the crime of PC 664/187 – attempted homicide – when Marez is tried to kill German Rodriquez.  During a robbery attempt, Marez had used a knife to intimidate Rodriguez  (PC 12022.7(a) and 1203(e)(3)).  At the time of the assault it is believed that the men attempted to force Rodriquez to give them his wallet.  Marez then began to assault the victim with a knife.  Rodriquez received a severe laceration to his neck and lower back due to the assault and armed robbery.

Buchanan's Nightclub, the scene of the assault and robbery

The assault began in the back of the business located at 4104 Monterey Road in San Jose. Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call, when they had found Rodriquez near the front entrance of the nightclub Buchanan.  He had been stabbed multiple times in the right side of his chest.  Officers photographed the scene and trail of blood leading from the victim as he walked around the business towards the front from where he had been stabbed.  Rodriguez had explained that he was stabbed and two people had taken his wallet.  Rodriquez was transported to the Regional Medical Center where he was treated for a two stab wounds to the right side of his chest and three other wounds to the lower left side of his back that appeared to be a inch to one and half inch lacerations.

The victim stated that the two male suspects had told him in English “I’m going to stab you.”  Then he heard the suspects say, “Give me your wallet.”  He didn’t have time to react and was jumped by the two individuals who took his wallet.  He felt himself being punched and kicked and was unable to defend himself.  Once he was able to support himself he walked to the front of Buchanan’s Night Club where he asked people to call the police for him.

Sgt. Jason Dwyer with the San Jose Police Department said, “These men were responsible for a home invasion robbery that occurred on the 24th of January.”  Dwyer said, “The same individuals are also suspected in a string of violent robberies in the days leading up to the attack.”

The elderly couple that was attacked had both vehicles stolen from their garage by the suspects.  According to the Press release by the San Jose Police Departments website, “Within 24 hours, both victim vehicles were recovered.”  The SJPD press release states, “The California Highway Patrol was involved in a high-speed pursuit with the Camry on Highway 152 which exceeded 100 miles per hour.”  The chase had ended with the CHP officer blowing a tire in the pursuit.

After several robberies, the suspects, wanting to find someone with more money, began to drive around until they had decided on a home invasion robbery, and they found a home in the Almaden neighborhood.  They asked the residents to give them are their money and anything of value.  According to a police report provided by the San Jose Police Department, the suspect Marez said, “They just wanted to grab what was valuable and then leave.”  Other robberies occurred at a Taco Stand at Story Road and Knox Road in San Jose, with another robbery reporting the same description of the individuals Marez, Palmerson, and Santana robbing a taco truck. They were unsuccessful and had only taken a few dollars from a tip jar, but that is when things began to escalate.

The three suspects then entered a Wienerschnitzel on Story Road and McGuiness Road.  Marez and Palmerson told everyone to get down on the floor.  One female victim was suspected of holding the cash ran off.  In retaliation, during the robbery Marez hit the woman with a wooden stick. According to the report, “He was sure he had hit her pretty hard.”

Santa Ana – Police have arrested Thomas Walker, 40 , a local transient, for drug sales, multiple burglaries and an additional unorthodox kidnapping charge.

Thomas Walker, 40, matched the police sketch created to find him

Walker was arrested for sales of methamphetamine while making a sale to undercover police officers only blocks away from the first two burglary locations. His set bail is $1,000,000.

Walker broke into two homes during two separate incidences within the same apartment complex located in the 500 block of Lyon St on Monday at approximately 7:00 am. and later at 2:00 pm that same day.

He entered the first home through an unlocked door, stole $100 from the sleeping victim’s purse then was confronted by the victim’s son and immediately fled, reportedly with a beer in his hand.

He entered the second home forcibly through a window. Once inside, the suspect physically detained the victim, saying that he was not going to hurt her, then demanded that she prepare him a meal. While she was cooking the meal the man ingested narcotics and began taking pictures of her with her camera, finally leaving after a few hours but not without first stealing her son’s bike.

Detectives received a tip that a male matching the composite had abandoned a beach cruiser along with clothing in an apartment complex. Additional charges will be added to the drug charges as he has been positively identified by the witnesses involved in the two burglaries.

On Feb 6, 36-year-old Gregory E. Blackcloud was reported to have committed the crime of assault with a deadly weapon, when the suspect attempted to stab another person under PC 667 and 1192.7. Blackcloud is also being charged with PC245 (a)(1) – with prior allegations of using a hand gun in the commission of a crime.

The attack took place at La Colina Park in San Jose

While at La Colina Park in the City of San Jose, Blackcloud removed a knife and showed it to the victim, and then slashed at the victim’s throat causing an 8-inch long laceration.  The victim believed that the attack was premeditated.   It is believed the two knew each other, but they were not close friends and rarely hung out.  It is believed that Blackcloud had become angry when the brother had allowed someone else to live in the house.  The victim was reported to have stated “You f*** with my family and I will f*** with yours.” Blackcloud, however, denied having any involvement in the assault and claimed he was playing the X-Box 360 all night.

The victim was suffering from a significant laceration to the left side of his neck.  The laceration was “parallel direct” meaning left to right side of his neck.  A 5-inch paring knife was shown to the victim to intimidate him before the assault.  Witnesses also believed that the suspect maybe have gang ties, however there was no evidence to support this.

According to Dave Low, a Policy Analyst for Communications with the Office of Mayor Chuck Reed at the City of San Jose, “Mayor Reed also chairs the Mayor’s Gang Prevention Task Force, which brings together a broad coalition of stakeholders to address gang violence in our communities.”

With the reduction of over 500 officers in the last few years, the mayor’s office has “allocated an additional $2 million to the Task Force to fund gang intervention and prevention programs,” Low said.

Low said, “Unfortunately, a decade of budget deficits (caused primarily by skyrocketing retirement costs) has forced the City to decrease the number of officers on the force.”

Downtown Hit & Run Driver Busted

Santa Barbara- In an incident uniquely unreported to the media, violent and deadly mayhem broke out in the middle of Santa Barbara’s busiest tourist and commercial district on March 1st just before 6:00 p.m., according to the Santa Barbara County Jail Booking Record report filed by Santa Barbara Police Department Officer Kasi Beutel.  Beutel-whose own personal notoriety pursuant to ongoing investigation into her employment history and performance metrics may have influenced the lack of media coverage in this case-and other officers responded to the report of a hit and run traffic collision at the busy intersection of State Street and Figueroa Street, in the heart of the heavily-trafficked downtown area.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers were provided with numerous witness statements and cell phone videos of the incident, including detailed vehicle and license plate descriptions of a 2006 BMW registered to Justin Alexander Holiday, 30.  Witnesses reported that Holiday’s vehicle had made an unsafe turn off the main thoroughfare and collided with a Honda CRV, whereupon the BMW made a U-turn and proceeded in the opposite direction, immediately colliding with a bicyclist riding in the bike lane.

According to witness statements summarized in Beutel’s “probable cause” recitation on the booking report, “Holiday’s vehicle became lodged on the west curb” at which time Holiday and his passenger alighted from the BMW and physically pushed the BMW off the curb and back onto the street.  As they jumped back into the car, a female pedestrian witness placed herself in front of the BMW in order to prevent the vehicle from leaving the scene.  Undaunted, Holiday “accelerated the vehicle two separate times, making movements toward the witness” as detailed in Beutel’s report.  The witness, choosing survival over heroics, stepped aside, and Holiday gunned the BMW away, fleeing the scene of the multiple accidents.

Within minutes, SBPD patrol officers confronted Holiday at his nearby residence and placed both him and his passenger, Sven Olson, 30, under arrest.  It was quickly determined that Holiday is an unlicensed driver, and he was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of hit and run with injury, driving without a license, and driving under the influence.  Additionally, both Holiday and Olson were booked for dissuading a witness, with their bails set at $100,000 each.

18-year-old Learns Life Isn’t a Cop Show

Brandon Robert Morrison, 18

Santa Barbara- In spite of the fact that it’s the home of a Federal minimum security penal facility, the community of Lompoc, situated between the much larger cities of Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, is a fairly tranquil place…that is until something happens.

On February 10th, 2013, the Ocean Avenue Circle K Store was the scene of a classic armed robbery when, just before midnight, according to the report issued by the Lompoc Police Department media alert, “a single armed suspect entered through the front door…and pointed a handgun at the clerk.”  With pictures speaking 1,000 words, Lompoc Police Department Sgt. Chuck Strange released the store’s surveillance video taken of the incident which clearly shows a scene that could have been shot for any popular TV cop show.

With that video in hand, the Investigations Section of the Lompoc Police Department conducted an intensive study of the images they had and a month later identified the suspect as Brandon Robert Morrison, 18.

Morrison during Robbery

When local police officers observed Morrison walking in the downtown Lompoc area on March 6th, they attempted to make contact, to which Morrison “immediately took off.” Perhaps still under the impression that he was a character in a bad TV cop show, Morrison attempted to flee on foot. Failing to realize that this was in fact reality, not a TV show, his attempt was short lived, seeing that officers pursued and dogged their man down and took him into custody at the scene.

Morrison was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of armed robbery, possession of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest.  He remains in custody with bail set at $102,500.

Another attempted kidnapping in Whittier

Whittier–Over the past couple of weeks, the city of Whittier has seen a rash of attempted kidnappings. While it has been determined that this incident was unrelated to the previous ones, Whittier Police, with the assistance of some local witnesses, arrested a man who attempted to abduct an 18-year-old woman.

David Polanco

According to a Whittier Police Department press release, on March 6th, officers responded to the 6700 block of Greenleaf Avenue in the Uptown Whittier area after receiving reports of a possible kidnapping in progress. By the time officers arrived, the suspect had already been detained by several witnesses on the scene.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the victim and the suspect, later identified as 41-year-old David Polanco, had met up earlier in the day. Both had willingly spent time together in the Uptown Whittier area before Polanco tried to pull the victim into an alley at approximately 2:02 PM. Witnesses told police that when Polanco heard a 911 call being made, he attempted to flee. That’s when some witnesses took action and detained Polanco until authorities arrived.

The attempted kidnapping happened on Whittier's Greenleaf Avenue

Polanco was charged with kidnapping and is currently being held on $100,050 bail. Polanco lived in the Los Angeles County area of Whittier and was a registered sex offender. While police hadn’t initially ruled out Polanco’s connection to a couple of other recent attempted kidnappings in the Whittier area, after showing Polanco’s picture to the victims, authorities announced on March 7th that Polanco was uninvolved in those incidences.

Whittier has experienced a recent spike in attempted kidnappings. On March 5th, a 30 to 40-year-old  man grabbed a 12-year-old boy at a park located at 15390 Lambert Road and told him not to make any noise. The boy made enough noise to alert his older brothers who were playing at a nearby basketball court and they subsequently punched and yelled at the man until he released the boy and fled.

In a separate incident, an 11-year-old female victim was kidnapped and forced into a red convertible at the intersection of Broadway and Citrus Street. The victim found herself in the car with another female juvenile victim, who was crying. The 11-year-old freed both herself and the 7-year-old and they both fled from the vehicle. The 11-year-old found her way home, but the 7-year-old has still yet to be heard from.

Whittier Police also believe that the suspect in the red convertible is related to a pair of February 5th incidences, where teenage girls were asked to get into his car. Both times, the girls refused and the suspect drove away before being identified.

Detectives are still investigating all those incidents. They recently thanked all of the local citizens who have assisted in these investigations, having received and followed up on hundreds of tips in recent weeks. The Whittier Police also advised local parents to use “common sense safe practices” when monitoring their children.

“If you can hear them you can help them,” said Whittier Police Community Relations Officer Brad White.

Suspect Drags Police Officer with Vehicle, Crashes into House

FRESNO – A wanted man driving an SUV dragged a police officer 60 feet with the vehicle and then crashed into a house, breaking a gas line.

John Behnken

The incident began on Thursday when officers with the Fresno Police Department were checking on a suspicious vehicle just before 8 a.m. on Fremont Avenue just east of Chestnut Avenue, near Fresno State. They discovered a man, woman and 7-year-old child sleeping inside the vehicle.

During a check, they discovered the man, John Behnken, was being sought on an out-of-state warrant. Authorities say the warrant was for a felony and may have been for drug and theft charges.

The woman and child left the vehicle of their own free will, but Behnken stayed inside. When officers tried to take him into custody, Behnken got behind the wheel of the SUV.

The suspect took off in the vehicle with one of the officers still holding on to the steering wheel. The officer told Behnken repeatedly to stop the SUV.

“He drug the officer approximately 60 feet. The vehicle then crashed into the home,” said Lt. Don Gross with the Fresno Police Department.

After the crash, officers surrounded the suspect and were able to subdue him with a stun gun. Police then placed him under arrest.

The officer who was dragged by the SUV was treated at Saint Agnes Medical Center for cuts and scrapes and released.

The fire department and utility workers were called to the scene to shut off the broken gas line at the home.

Behnken will be facing charges of assault on a police officer.

Caught on Camera

Palo Alto – Victor Adrian Martinez-Lopez didn’t know it but he was being watched. On Wednesday, February 27, at about 6 pm, he had broken into a woman’s apartment and thought he was getting away with the burglary when he saw the surveillance camera, and took it along with a digital music player. But the camera had already sent the victim, a woman in her 30’s, his images.

Victor Adrian Martinez-Lopez poses for his mugshot. This time he knew his picture was being taken.

The camera was triggered by motion sensor and as soon as Lopez moved in, his photographs were being taken and sent via email to the victim. The next day, officers from the Palo Alto Police Department took those photographs to the property management company responsible for the apartment complex.

According to Officer Ron Harris, “an employee immediately recognized the suspect as one of their painters, 28 year old” Martinez-Lopez of Hayward.  He had no work in that apartment that day and did not have access to keys to any of the apartments.

Further investigation, said Officer Harris, revealed the victim had left a window unlocked in her apartment, which may be how Martinez-Lopez entered.  There was no indication he was responsible for a jewelry theft the previous year in the same residence nor for any other residential burglaries in Palo Alto.

Martinez-Lopez was arrested later that same day. The stolen digital music player was in his possession, confirmed Officer Harris. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for one count of residential burglary (a felony). He was already on court probation in Alameda County for a DUI conviction.

Motorcycle Racer Arrested After Fatal Crash

Santa Barbara – Santa Barbara’s picturesque Foothill Road, an idyllic two-lane thoroughfare from where the glistening Pacific can often be seen in the distance, became the scene of a horrific, bloody nightmare in the early afternoon of March 2nd when  two local men met their deaths in a grisly accident.

Francisco Alex Rodriguez

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff spokesman Sgt. Mike McGrew, the driver of a westbound SUV observed a motorcycle approaching from the opposite direction and “go by at a high rate of speed.”  Proceeding westbound, the driver of the SUV, as McGrew detailed in his report to the media, “saw two more motorcyclists advancing down the road,” one of which had crossed the double-yellow line and was going the wrong way in the SUV’s lane.  That motorcycle directly impacted the front left fender of the SUV;  it’s driver, Raul Ibarra, 24, was critically injured.  The third motorcycle then careened out of control, and its driver, Jonathan Leon, 24, sustained serious injuries.

The lead motorcycle in the trio returned to the accident scene, and apparently seeing that his friends were not going to be continuing their recreational race, promptly fled the scene well before emergency personnel appeared on the scene.  “He stood at the embankment and called out to the now deceased motorcyclist.  He didn’t get a response and got back on his bike and fled the scene,” SBPD Investigator Jaycee Hunter said in her statement to the media.

Both Ibarra and Leon were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where Ibarra succumbed to his injuries; Leon remains hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Scene of Fatal Crash

Pursuant to the SUV driver’s witness report of a third biker who fled the scene, an investigation soon led Detectives to identify that rider as Francisco Alex Rodriguez, 23.  A warrant was quickly issued for his arrest, and deputies reported to Rodriguez’s Santa Barbara residence where—following a brief attempt at evasion by fleeing on foot—he was taken into custody.

Rodriguez was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run, engaging in a speed contest causing injury, and driving without a valid license.  He remains in custody with bail set at $100,000.

DUI on ‘Speedway’ takes another young life

$

The city is going to fix it. The Supes promise. It will take two years and more than $900,000, but somebody is finally going to fix the Sloat Blvd. ‘speedway’, where a 17-year-old student at Lowell High School named Hanren Chang was run down on March 3.

The 17-year-old victim, Hanren Chang (photo from change.org)

By a twenty-eight-year old drunk driver named Kieran Drew Brewer.

Sloat is the straight shot that runs from 19th Avenue to the ocean, past Stern Grove, Lakeshore Plaza and Sunset Blvd, down past the zoo to the Great Highway. Speed has been a problem for “decades”, and for the better part of the first mile there’s not a single stop sign.

Ms. Chang is struck a few block from the plaza. On a Sunday night. On her birthday.

The driver doesn’t flee.

He will be charged with felony gross vehicular manslaughter, while driving with a .08 or higher blood alcohol level.  Bail is set at $300,000. He could get 10 years in State Prison.

The victim was, among other things, a long distance runner on the Lowell High School track team. She had run a 5K race earlier in the day.

Sloat Blvd. - the 'speedway'

This is the second similar DUI incident in the last two and half months in San Francisco. On December 20, at around 9 p.m., Gina Eunice is driving along the 500 block of Twin Peaks Blvd, just south of Christmas Tree Pt.  There’s no better view of the city.

But then suddenly out of the dark a group of four pedestrians. Eunice hits one, a woman named Yuee Yao, who is knocked down a hill. She has come to the city to visit her son. She dies.

Shortly afterward, police find Eunice, 23, in a nearby parking lot, with three other people in the car. Eunice is found to be intoxicated and is charged with felony gross vehicular manslaughter.

Bail is set $2 million, which stands in contrast to the $300,000 for Mr. Brewer.

DA spokesperson Alex Bastian will not speculate on the disparity of bails except to say, “Obviously the facts and circumstances in the two cases are different.  And there were two different judges.”

A third pedestrian death case has been in the news: the trial of Christ Bucchere, 36, who was riding his bike on Thursday morning March 29, a year ago when he struck a 71-year-old man named Sutchi Hui. Mr. Hui was crossing the intersection of Market and Castro, walking along with his wife.

Out of nowhere he’s hit; blunt force trauma; a few days later, dead.  The defense lawyer says the charge against his client should be reduced to a misdemeanor.  The prosecutor says Christ Bucchere was going down Market Street at 30 miles an hour, and ran three lights and a stop sign before hitting Mr. Hui.

At least 18 pedestrians were killed last year in San Francisco.
