MONTEREY — Authorities with the Medical Board of California’s Prescription Drug Strike Force arrested Monterey Psychiatrist Dr. Duke Fisher for allegedly prescribing drugs without a legitimate medical purpose.

On Thursday, August 29, the Medical Board of California’s Prescription Drug Strike Force visited Dr. Duke’s San Jose Office on the 800 block of Blossom Hill Road on a complaint that he was prescribing medication in exchange for cash.

After a number of undercover operations in which agents would pose as patients, it was found that Dr. Fisher had prescribed controlled substances without a legitimate medical purpose.

“He had also prescribed controlled substances to a customer who had admitted to using heroin and methamphetamines in the past,” Medical Board’s Press Officer Cassandra Hockenson said in a press release.

He faces charges of violating the Health and safety code section 11153- prescribing without a legitimate medical purpose and 11156- prescribing to an addict.  He also faces an additional charge from the Business and Professions Code, section 725- excessive prescribing of drugs.

Dr Fisher was transported and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail with bail set at $64,000. He is due in court on September 6.  Other than his San Jose office, he also has an office in Monterey on the 1000 block of Cass Street.

Dr Fisher received his medical license a year after graduating Indiana University’s School of Medicine in 1964 on good standing.
