On Wednesday, July 31st, the parents of a 17-year-old girl addicted to opiates checked her into a local Santa Clarita Valley area rehabilitation clinic. By the next day, she’d flown the coop.
The facility reported her missing to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and a search by both the Sheriff’s station and the girl’s mother, who feared her daughter may relapse and possibly overdose, began.
In the days that followed, the search brought her to 18-year-old Saugus area local Christopher Guthrie – none other than her missing daughter’s boyfriend – who reportedly told her he hadn’t seen or spoken to the girl since she’d gone to rehab.
On Saturday, August 3rd, deputies were tipped that the teenage runaway was holed up in Guthrie’s home. Officers immediately paid Guthrie a visit and, lo and behold, there she was – in the bathroom tripping on narcotics. She was promptly taken into custody and detained at Sylmar Juvenile Hall.
Apparently, the girl had been staying with Guthrie for a number of days.
The investigation was handed over to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station J-Team (Juvenile Intervention Team), who determined that Guthrie knowingly kept the missing girl from her mother, allowing her to stay in his home and indulge her addiction.
The case was presented to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office and a warrant was issued for Guthrie’s arrest on charges relating to child concealment, maintaining a locale for the purpose of using a controlled substance, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
On September 4th, J-Team deputies arrested Guthrie at his residence on the listed charges as well as an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance. He is currently housed at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on $80,000 bail and is expected to appear in North Valley Superior Court on September 6th.
