DERBY ACRES — A man accused of assault with a deadly weapon is in custody after beating another man with a pipe wrench.

Michael Atkison, 46, was booked into the Kern County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.
His bail has been set at $50,000.
According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called out to an area off Highway 33 and Cadet Road near Derby Acres at about 11 a.m. on Aug. 23, for a report of an assault.
When deputies arrived they discovered the victim, Bobby Fitts, lying on the ground being attended to by medical aid and fire personnel.
He was transported by ambulance a short time later to an area nearby, then air lifted to Kern Medical Center for treatment where he was treated for moderate to major head injuries.
“After speaking with several witnesses at the scene, deputies were able to determine that Fitts and several co-workers were on a job site in the area,” said sheriff’s spokesperson Ray Pruitt. “While on the job site, the suspect struck Fitts from behind, hitting him on the on the back of the head with a large pipe wrench.”
Atkison then confronted others before getting into a work truck and fleeing the area.
Deputies later located Atkinson at about 5:15 p.m. after responding to a report of a suspicious person on the Buena Vista Golf Course, which is several miles west of Derby Acres.
When they arrived deputies they located the person in the parking lot and determined it was Atkinson.
Deputies also found a large pipe wrench in the bed of the suspect’s pickup truck that was parked on a dirt road about five miles south of the golf course.
