FRESNO – A suspect who charged an officer while holding a knife was shot several times and remains in the hospital in critical condition.

A Fresno police officer was called to a family disturbance at an apartment complex in east-central Fresno around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Family members told police that the man had been acting oddly and they were concerned for his well being. When the officer arrived at the scene, he found the suspect and two family members in an alley.
As the officer started to get out of his car, the suspect, who was armed with a knife, charged him. The officer fired one round at the suspect, but the suspect kept running toward him. The officer fell while backing up, and fired several more rounds, this time bringing the suspect down, according to the police department.
The suspect was transported to Community Regional Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition. The names of the suspect and the officer have not been released. The suspect is said to be in his late 20s.
