BAKERSFIELD — An 83-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after he entered a local funeral home carrying a briefcase with a handgun and ammunition and started wa
ving it at customers and employees.
Kenneth Darrell West was arrested by Kern County Sheriff’s deputies and transported to a Kern County Jail where he was booked for false imprisonment, obstructing or delaying a peace officer in the performance of their duties and weapons charges.
He is being held on $7,500 bail.
According to police, West, who had recently paid for funeral arrangements at the business, walked into the Basham Funeral Home in the 3300 block of Niles Street in Bakersfield at about 2 p.m. on Sept. 3, and waved a handgun at workers and patrons inside the location.
Sheriff’s spokesperson Ray Pruitt said a funeral home employee was able to speak to West and eventually convinced him to leave the building as other employees a Basham Funeral Home and patrons fled to safety in other parts of the building or by running outside through rear doors.
Pruitt also added that West was then met by patrol deputies outside the front door when he tried to exit.
“Deputies ordered him to show his hands, which were concealed as he emerged from the business,” he said. “The suspect returned inside the business where he was taken into custody inside without incident.”
