Santa Barbara – The Santa Barbara County Jail has a new tenant with a surprising background, in that members of the Santa Barbara County Fire Department are rarely seen charged with felonies.

August 30th, however, proved to be the unusual exception from the norm when Robert Perez, a retired county fireman, who had been the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation conducted by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, was arrested and booked into the jail. According to SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, “Perez was charged with grand theft and filing false tax returns”, and is currently held in custody on $110,000 bail.
Perez was well aware of the investigation into his personal finances and the ensuing allegations deriving from his performance as the Insurance Administrator for the Santa Barbara County Firefighter’s Local Union 2046. It was the Firefighter’s Union, Hoover reported to the media, that “notified the Sheriff’s Office regarding alleged criminal activity” on the part of Perez. That activity—specifically the misdirection of union funds and concomitant avoidance of federal income taxes from 2006 through 2012—generated the four month-long investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division.
The arrest of Perez was also somewhat atypical, as, with the help of his attorney, he reported to the SBSD Headquarters and voluntarily turned himself in for arrest. Voluntarily submitting to arrest or not, Perez was summarily handcuffed and walked across the parking lot to the jail for booking.
