Santa Barbara – Late in the afternoon of August 24th, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a 911 Emergency call reporting the stabbing of two men just north of the Santa Barbara city limits in the vicinity of heavily-traveled Highway 154, a main artery leading to the Santa Ynez Valley.

Gabriel Rivera

Upon arrival at the scene, as reported to the media by SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, deputies “located the victims in a black pickup truck” on the shoulder of the busy thoroughfare.  Deputies immediately summoned medical personnel to the scene while they established a law enforcement perimeter of the area “and brought in a specialty K9 unit and Santa Barbara County Air Support Copter 2” to effect an intensive  high-level search of the hilly terrain in the area.

As intensive as the search was, however, no suspect was located at that time.  Witness statements established he primary suspect in the violent assault as Gabriel Rivera, 47, who as described in some detail in the Santa Barbara county Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division’s outreach via the media to the general public for any assistance in locating Rivera.

Just two days later, SBSD received an anonymous call indicating that Rivera was once again back in the neighborhood where the verbal confrontation that led eventually to the multiple stabbings occurred.  According to Hoover,  Rivera—who was a guest resident at the reported address—“had come back to get some of his property.”  What he got was far more than he was seeking, as once again Air Support Copter 2 and a phalanx of Deputies responded to the scene in force.

Deputies made their presence known (no doubt the helicopter accomplished that), and Rivera—who wears a patch over his left eye–exited the premises with hands raised high.  He was promptly taken into custody on outstanding ADW warrants, with additional charges for the stabbing assault pending review by the District Attorney.  With bail set at $100,000, Rivera remains in custody at Santa Barbara County Jail.
