VICTORVILLE – San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials, investigating an Aug. 11 shooting in which a Hesperia man was killed just outside a convenience store, released new information about a person of interest. It led to the arrest of Eric Robbins, 35, who pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Store clerk Daniel Olvera, 26, was shot once in the chest at the AM/PM Mini-Mart at 15730 Roy Rogers Drive at 10:40 p.m., the murderer apparently caught on video surveillance. The county sheriff’s department released the video that showed images of a man, plus the truck he drove on the night Olvera was shot. In that video, a Caucasian man estimated between 25 and 35 years old and about 5-feet, 6-inches, was reportedly upset with a security guard for not allowing him into the store. Olvera had been counting cash from his drawer during a shift change, said investigators, with the security guard standing near the door to keep new customers from entering, which is store policy.

Robbins, who is a convicted felon, fits the description of the man seen in the video. When he was arrested near his Victorville home one day after police released the surveillance videos, investigators also discovered other undisclosed evidence linking him to the crime.

At a news conference seeking the public’s help, investigators said Robbins walked to his truck, a white, four-door Toyota Tacoma that looked to be between 2005 and 2013. It had TRD Racing Development stickers on both rear panels.

Originally, detectives only called him a person of interest and not a suspect. Reports are that he was involved in the argument with the security guard less than one hour before Olvera was shot. No one saw the shooter, said detectives and no money was reported stolen from the cash box. It was a single shot that killed Olvera, according to witnesses.

ARCO had offered up to a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Olvera’s murder.
