Suspect was apprehended in Mexicali, Mexico
SALINAS — Investigators with the Salinas Police Department have arrested 22-year-old Salinas resident Julio Cesar Garcia in connection with the January 27 shooting death of 17-year-old Salinas resident Jorge Alberto Perez.

On January 27, at 2:15 pm, officers with the Salinas Police Department responded to the parking lot of an apartment complex at 52 La Posada Drive. When they arrived, they found Perez sitting in a vehicle suffering from a single gunshot would to his chest.
Perez was transported to a local hospital where he later died from his wounds. Police were able to ascertain from witnesses that a dark color Nissan or Honda was seen leaving the area shortly after the shooting.
On February 7, investigators were able to a identify Garcia as the prime suspect in this gang related shooting. The Violence Suppression Unit of the Salinas Police Department served a search warrant at the 100 block of Natividad Road in an attempt to locate Garcia but he was not found.
An arrest warrant was issued, charging him with murder. Garcia was considered to be armed and extremely dangerous. On August 26, authorities from Mexico, the Deputy US Marshall Office, and investigators from the Salinas Police Department apprehended Garcia in Mexicali, Mexico.
“We received a tip of Garcia’s whereabouts,” Salinas Police Detective Byron Gansen said, “ We, along with the US Marshals Office and Mexican Police, arrested him without incident.”
Garcia, who is a U.S. citizen, was taken into custody and turned over to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Officer at the Calexico port of entry. He sits in an Imperial County Jail in El Centro awaiting extradition back to Monterey County.
