Before the tense drama ended, Fairfield police tried a variety of means to negotiate with and arrest a knife-wielding Coreion Johnson, 38, of Fairfield, who had barricaded herself in the back bedroom of a Grande Circle apartment.
Police got a call at approximately 6:30 am August 27 from a woman with whom Johnson had been staying as an overnight guest at the Grande Circle apartment. The woman told police dispatchers Johnson was acting very erratically after “smoking drugs” most of the previous night and had threatened her life.
When Johnson’s host confronted her about the behavior, Johnson reportedly threateningly gestured at her with a hot iron. Later, she heaved a barbell at her and yelled the death threats. Johnson’s host and her son then fled the apartment and made the call to police.
When responding Fairfield officers attempted to enter the apartment Johnson allegedly threatened them with a knife. Johnson, failing to inflict any injury, then retreated to the back bedroom.
Officers negotiated through the bedroom door to no avail. They then sent a robot with audio-visual capabilities into the bedroom. Johnson threatened to kill the officers and their K-9 dogs by way of reply. At that point police evacuated the entire apartment complex. They tried non-lethal tactics, including deploying pepper balls (fragile projectiles filled with chili pepper powder), to dislodge her.
Johnson did not budge. Finally, around 11 am, SWAT entered the bedroom and peacefully took her into custody.
After a trip to the hospital, Johnson was booked into Solano County jail.
