SAN BERNARDINO – An October trial date was set for a man accused of a November 2011 fatal shooting outside of a sports bar in Redlands.
Randy Ortis, 24, of San Bernardino, was accused in the shooting death of Kruze Levusi Kuaea, 22, of Calimesa, while wounding two others, when he reportedly shot them on Nov. 19, 2011. Ortis will also appear at a pretrial hearing set for Sept. 27.
Three people were shot outside Charlie Jewell’s sports bar and grill at 1 East State Street in the early morning hours of Nov. 19, a crime that was caught on a video taping system unit used by Redlands Police in several sections of the city. Tipsters came forward after police released the surveillance video. The shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. after two groups of men were seen having a verbal altercation inside the bar. Those involved in the initial fight were escorted out by security personnel, where more words and blows were exchanged which, police believe, led to the shooting. Police said Ortis was seen firing on the group of men just outside the restaurant on Orange Street. He was arrested one week after the shooting. San Bernardino police and the San Bernardino County sheriff’s SWAT team assisted in the arrest, Baker said.
Two other victims, Jeremy Lavanway and Jared Miller, were wounded in the shooting, but survived. When Redlands police studied the video footage, they were able to identify Ortis and his vehicle, which led to his arrest. Ortis taken into custody about 2 a.m. on Nov. 26 in the 5500 block of Bonnie St., an unincorporated area near San Bernardino’s Del Rosa neighborhood, said Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker.
