SAN MATEO – A resident on Hemlock Avenue was at home when he heard a knock at his front door at about 6 am the morning of Thursday, August 15. Before he could answer, he heard the front door knob rattling as someone tried to force open the locked door. The resident looked through a side window and seeing a young man there, demanded to know what he was doing. The man fled.
The two teens targeted a home on Hemlock in San Mateo for burglary, but the resident called police before they could get away
The resident immediately contacted the police and within minutes, the police had arrived and had gotten a description of the suspect. Officers immediately found two young men walking away from the residence, one of whom matched the victim’s description: 19 year old Alphonso Jones, an Oakland resident.
Both Jones and Leon Watson, an 18 year old Oakland resident, were immediately arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail for attempted burglary.
The success of this arrest was mostly due to alert witnesses, like this resident, said Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
“A quick police response and timely arrest would not have been possible without the willingness of an observant witness to call San Mateo Police Department about the crime in progress,” said Deputy Rosenblatt.
