FRESNO – Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a woman’s claims that she was raped and tortured while being held hostage in a house for seven days.
Investigators discovered a decaying body in a shallow grave in the same house, located at 2623 E. McKenzie Ave., where the woman was being held, police said.
“The male victim was dragged outside from the residence along the side of the house, which leads to a basement area, and he was taken down into the basement and he was buried in a shallow grave,” Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
The man, who police said was in his 20s, had been dead for days when his body was discovered. Officers have not said whether the woman witnessed the murder of the man.
Gilbert Anthony Nunez, 41, and Margaret Jeanette Alaniz, 23, were arrested on suspicion of murder and on several other charges.
The kidnapping victim’s week-long ordeal began on Aug. 14 when she went to the home to look for her stolen bike. Alaniz allegedly pulled her inside the house and then began beating her and eventually torturing her.
“That torture consisted of cutting the victims arms and body in multiple locations, as well as pouring what is described as a caustic chemical on various parts of her body,” Dyer said.
Both Alaniz and Nunez tortured the woman multiple times over the course of seven days. The victim was also sexually assaulted. Police believe the sexual assault and the discovery of the man’s body are related.
On Wednesday, the woman managed to escape and called the police. Officers went to the home Wednesday morning to investigate, and obtained a search warrant early Thursday. That’s when they discovered the body of the unidentified man.
Both Alaniz and Nunez have a criminal history. Alaniz was sentenced to two years in state prison for robbery, was arrested earlier this year for identity theft, and spent six months in jail in 2008 for drug possession.
Nunez has been in and out of prison since 1994 for drug charges, corporal injury on a spouse, and vehicle theft. Last October, he was convicted of burglary and drug possession.
