A man from Merced, CA, has been arrested after transporting a 14-year-old girl across the country without the permission of her legal guardians, according to an official press release from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

Nathan Salas, 27, was arrested on August 19, 2013, at the Sacramento International Airport and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He was reportedly charged with intentionally concealing a child without parents’ consent and is being held on $100,000 bail.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, on August 19 the minor female victim was reported as a missing person by her parents in Hamden, Connecticut after leaving a suicide note and disappearing from home. The Hamden Police Department reportedly conducted an intensive search to locate her and entered her into a national database as a missing juvenile. Hamden PD also conducted forensic analysis of the victim’s phone and obtained a cellular phone number for Salas, who was discovered to be from Merced.
Sacramento International Airport reportedly received a call from the Merced County Sheriff’s Department about a runaway whose parents had reported missing. Further investigation revealed information about flight arrangements for Salas and the victim from Connecticut to Sacramento. Investigators reportedly believe Salas and the victim met online, where they developed a relationship over several months.

At approximately 10:30pm on August 19 Sheriff’s deputies reportedly made contact with Salas and the victim as they deboarded their inbound flight at the airport. Deputies also contacted the victim’s father in Connecticut and he confirmed the parents did not know Salas and had not given their daughter permission to leave with him.
After Salas’ arrest, the victim was reportedly transported to the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall as an out-of-county runaway.
