Santa Barbara – Santa Barbara, known as a vacation playground for most, has also been known lately as the scene of an alleged assault at the County Jail system at the hands of two deputies.

Two Santa Barbara County Jail Custody Deputies were arrested on charges of the use of unnecessary force under color of authority pursuant to said alleged assault upon an inmate residing at the jail.

According to Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, the complaint was “brought to our agency’s attention by the Public Defender’s Office on June 18, 2013,” whereupon an investigation into the matter promptly ensued.

The custody deputies involved are Robert Kirsch, 30, and Christopher Johnson, 28.  Each has been charged with felony assault by a public officer as detailed in the criminal complaint issued by Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley.

Clearly finding himself at the eye of a local media storm, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown addressed the issue by saying, “Our agency does not tolerate the unnecessary or excessive use of force.  The behavior alleged in the criminal complaint is contrary to the high standards of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.  I am saddened by these allegations that do not reflect theconduct and actions of the vast majority of the hundreds of men and women of the Sheriff’s Office who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving others.”

According to Hoover, booking photos of the arrestees in this case “are not available”.  Arraignment of Kirsch and Johnson is scheduled for August 30, 2013.
