SANTA CLARITA VALLEY – Golden Oak Community School, a K – 6th grade school whose motto is “From little acorns grow the Mighty Golden Oak”, suffered a loss at the hands of an unexpected source.
A silver Apple iMAC computer was discovered missing from the Canyon Country school, and security camera footage revealed that the theft occurred at about 9 pm on Sunday, August 4th. Investigation quickly turned towards a security officer contracted to the school, 32-year-old Aleksei Ilnitskiy. Ilnitskiy was the assigned officer at the time of the theft, and the investigating deputy from the Santa Clarita Valley Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs determined that Ilnitskiy had a key to the school building. According to a Sheriff’s press release, deputies responded to the private security company’s main office, where the stolen computer was found. Both the computer and the key were released to a school district representative.
This was apparently not the first time Ilnitskiy, or possibly another security officer from the company, had tried to get away with a school computer. Deputies reported that another one stolen from an area school was also discovered at the same time. Detectives are currently investigating that theft, and will no doubt be comparing assigned guards with the victimized school campus.
Meanwhile, Ilnitskiy was arrested on Friday August 9th, and the L.A. District Attorney has filed one count of felony commercial burglary against him. Bail was set at $65,000; he is due in court on August 21.
