SALINAS—An officer with Salinas Police Department is on administrative leave after an armed robbery resulted in the shooting of 44-year-old Salinas resident Charlene Hale.
On Thursday, Salinas Police responded to the City Suds Laundromat on the corner of East Market and Pajaro Streets on a report of a subject causing a disturbance and brandishing a weapon.
When officers arrived at the scene, they spotted Hale just as she was leaving. Hale ignored the officer’s verbal commands and reached towards her waistband where a dark metallic object, looking suspiciously like a handgun, was tucked therein.
Hale continued to ignore the officer’s verbal warnings and opted to draw whatever she’d been hiding, at which point the officer saw no choice but to fire.
“An investigation of the incident has revealed that Ms. Hale was in fact armed with a large knife and reached for the weapon that was tucked in her waistband in plain view of the officer,” Salinas Police Commander Vincent Maiorana said, ”We have been working diligently to solve this case, gathering evidence and interviewing credible witnesses.”
An investigation revealed that Hale was walking through the parking lot of the City Suds Laundromat when she attempted to rob a male adult customer. When the customer refused to give her any money she entered the Laundromat brandishing the weapon that was first described to police as a handgun. She was able to obtain an undisclosed amount of money from another customer in the building.
Hale eventually departed and was walking away when she was confronted by the Salinas officer. After the confrontation, Hale was transported to a bay area hospital for treatment of a single gunshot wound.
On Thursday, September 26, Hale was released from the hospital and into police custody. She was booked into the Monterey County Jail on charges of attempted robbery, robbery and brandishing of a weapon.
The officer involved is due to return to work within the week.
