Pasadena drivers best stay sober…

PASADENA – The Pasadena Police have announced an upcoming DUI and Drivers License checkpoint to be conducted this Friday night, September 27, from 7 pm to 3 am.

As is common for DUI checkpoints, the specific location has not been disclosed, and may in fact be conducted in multiple locations. Police, by publicizing the process, hope to encourage drivers to be aware that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will probably lead to their arrest, if it hasn’t already resulted in an accident causing injury or death to the driver, passengers, and other innocent victims. However, a known location may actually encourage drunk or “buzzed” drivers to just avoid the checkpoint.

DUI checkpoints and other efforts in drunk and impaired driving have paid off, reducing fatalities and collisions over the years, but much is yet to be done. In California in 2011, impaired driving led to 774 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver. “Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 5 lives and resulted in 65 injury crashes harming 85 of our friends and neighbors,” said Pasadena Police Chief Phil Sanchez.

However, “DUI Checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety. “But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, Pasadena needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”
Funding for this checkpoint is provided to Pasadena Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to continue to work together to bring an end to these tragedies.

Of course, any time or any day, if anyone witnesses a Drunk Driver, they are encouraged to call 9-1-1 before tragedy strikes.
