A confirmed gang member with a criminal past was caught with a half-pound of marijuana, a submachine gun and ammunition in his Merced home this weekend.
Joseph Herrera, 23, was booked on suspicion of possession of a submachine gun, possession of a high-capacity magazine, being a felon in possession of a firearm, criminal street gang participation and possession of more than an ounce of marijuana, as well as other charges.
Herrera has been identified as a confirmed gang member by the Merced Police Department. Officers were doing a routine search of his home when they found the drugs and gun. By law he is not allowed to possess firearms or ammunition.
Herrera was arrested when this automatic weapon and marijuana were found at his home
Records show Herrera was sentenced to nine months in jail for a 2010 conviction of possession of a deadly weapon.
