BARSTOW – A Barstow man who pleaded not guilty to performing a lewd act on a 12-year-old girl will appear in court again this week.
Brandon Lopez, 20, a volunteer at a local doctor’s office, is facing charges on four counts for performing a lewd act on the girl that investigators say he contacted through social media. He pleaded not guilty on Friday. Arrested two days earlier in a sting operation, Lopez was taken into custody near Second Avenue and Buena Vista Street by Barstow police.

Barstow police began the investigation on Sept. 11 when the girl told her mother that Lopez had contacted her through a Facebook account. Lopez reportedly performed a lewd act on her when they had met in person, said authorities. Police said he also tried to get the girl to come to his house for sex on another occasion.
Part of the sting operation included creating a fictitious profile of a 13-year-old girl. Police said Lopez arranged to meet the fictitious girl at a pre-determined location.
Three of the charges he is facing, which include lewd or lascivious acts with a child, are felonies. Investigation revealed that Lopez, who likely obtained information about the girls from patient medical records, might have convinced other victims by claiming to be a firefighter with the Barstow Fire Protection District.
Lopez, who has no previous criminal history in San Bernardino County, is currently in custody at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, held on $400,000 bail. Bail had been originally set at $250,000. Lopez is scheduled for a pre-preliminary hearing in a Victorville court on Sept. 30.
