FRESNO – Police arrested a man they say is one of the most prolific auto thieves in the city of Fresno, but he was released the same day.

Eric Macias, 33, was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of auto theft, being a felon in possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property. His bail was set at $1.3 million, but he was released six hours later without posting bond because of overcrowding.
Macias and other “nonviolent” suspects charged with auto and property thefts are among those released early because their crimes do not involve people, only property, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department.
Police say they believe that Macias steals anywhere from three to five cars a day in order to support his addiction to methamphetamine.
Although Macias was released the same day, police say that each arrest helps build a stronger case against habitual auto thieves like Macias, which will hopefully one day lead to a long prison term.
