A La Mesa woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly lying to police about where her two young children drowned to death.

Tassie Behrens found her 2-year-old and 16-month-old face down in the swimming pool at her home this summer. Behrens drove the kids to a fire station for help, telling authorities they had drowned in a mobile home park. Neither child survived.
She was apparently trying to keep police from finding marijuana she was growing at her house. But investigators searched her home anyway and found marijuana plants and growing equipment.
Police initially held off on charging Behrens while the kids’ autopsy report was completed. On Thursday, she was booked into custody on suspicion of child abuse, and possession, cultivation and sale of a controlled substance.
Behrens was apparently taking a nap when her children drowned in the pool.
