CLOVIS – When police officers went to a man’s house to question him about a sexual assault case, the man fled the scene, leading officers on an extensive search of the neighborhood that locked down a nearby elementary school.
The Fresno Police Department received a call Thursday afternoon from a 21-year-old woman who claimed that she had been sexually assaulted Wednesday evening in Fresno. After identifying 45-year-old Roger Moreno as a possible suspect in the assault, they went to his apartment on Stuart Avenue near Helm Avenue, near Cole Elementary School, in order to question him, according to authorities.
When officers knocked on the door, Moreno, wearing a white t-shirt, took off out the back door. Officers locked down the area, from Stuart Avenue south to Bullard Avenue, in an attempt to locate him.
Cole Elementary was put on lock down and students had to remain on campus for an hour due to police dogs being used in the search. Parents were able to pick up their children from school around 4:30 p.m.
Around 40 officers from the Clovis and Fresno police departments took part in the search, but they were unable to locate Moreno. However, authorities say it will only be a matter of time before they find him.
