SAN DIEGO — A nugget of rather unsettling news circulated the streets and corridors of Paradise Hills over the past weekend — that 45-year-old Rachel Escobedo, principal of Robert E. Lee Elementary School, had been arrested on drugs and stolen weapon charges.

She posted $25,000 bond on Sunday and reported to her regular shift on Monday morning, as her supervisors were yet unaware of her arrest. Once they were, however, she was placed in leave the following morning pending the results of the case.
Rewinding, we find a lone officer responding to a suspicious vehicle report in the 6800 block of Missy Court just before 8:30 p.m. that Saturday, the 7th of September. There he found Escobedo in her 1993 Honda Accord with a 60-year-old man, a bottle of vodka, and a small amount of marijuana.
After Escobedo granted him permission to search the vehicle, the officer apparently discovered a loaded .22-caliber pistol in the trunk, as well as roughly two dozen prescription pills resembling hydrocodone and four small zip-loc bags containing some kind of white crystalline powder. The drugs were submitted for lab testing, meanwhile a computer check came back revealing that the gun had been reported stolen.
Escobeda was taken into custody on suspicion of illegal possession of a loaded firearm and controlled substances, while her companion — whose relationship with her is unknown — was released. She is scheduled for arraignment on the 17th of September.
