Thousand Oaks – Today’s modern banks provide customers with myriad banking options, from internet-based online account services to an entire panoply of ATM conveniences ranging from check deposits to cash withdrawals.  All of these nifty options come, however, with no uncertain risk of falling victim to both rudimentary and sophisticated scenarios designed to relieve the unsuspecting of their money.

Karen Sargsyan

One such scenario involves the placing of an almost-undetectable electronic scanning device in ATM slots that records account numbers and passwords, and when Chase Bank employees at the Thousand Oaks branch reported having discovered one such device in place on June 30th, a criminal investigation immediately ensued.

According to Thousand Oaks Police Department spokesman Sgt. Alan Hartkop, bank investigators provided information that dovetailed with evidence from Santa Clara County’s tech-savvy Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, which led to the identification of Karen Sargsyan, 29, a resident of Glendale as the principal suspect.

On September 11th, Detectives with the Thousand Oaks Fraud and Forgery Unit made contact with Sargsyan at his residence “and obtained evidence directly linking him to the crime,” Hartkop reported to the media.  Hartkop further detailed that Sargsyan “was arrested for fraudulent use of a card scanning device and possession of personal information for the purposes of identity theft.”  With that evidence, Sargsyan was transported to Ventura County Jail  and booked on those charges with his bail set at $100,000.

In bringing this case to public view, Hartkop said, “The Thousand Oaks Police Department would like to remind its residents to regularly check their bank account statements.”
