SALINAS — The Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force arrested 26-year-old Oscar Resendiz and 23-year-old Gerardo Cerna, both of Salinas, after it was discovered that they were in possession of a firearm and drugs.

Gerardo Cerna

Two members of the Monterey County Joint Task Force were on patrol in the City of Salinas near Felice Street near Market Street when they noticed a suspicious vehicle parked on the street. As they approached, the two subjects visibly attempted to conceal their activities.

When the two officers contracted the driver, Cerna, he appeared very nervous while his passenger, Resendiz, attempted to conceal something. They were both instructed to remain still and keep their hands visible.

But Resendiz had other plans — instead of showing his hands and remaining still, he opened the door in an attempt to flee.  As he began to run, officers heard what appeared to be a muffled gunshot.

As the officers came around the passenger side of the vehicle, they found Resendiz lying on the ground. “Resendiz had accidentally shot himself in the lower leg with the revolver that he had tried to conceal in his waistband,” said Monterey County Gang Task Force Commander Stan Cooper in a press release.

Both Resendiz and Cerna were arrested and booked into the Monterey County Jail on various firearm, drug, and probation violations. Officers searched the vehicle and found hash oil, marijuana, and prescription medication along with the firearm that Resendiz had on his person.

Resendiz was taken to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas and treated for the gunshot wound to his leg, then released to authorities.
