FRESNO – Police identified and are on the look out for two suspects believed to be responsible for the fatal stabbing of a 31-year-old man earlier this month.

Samuel Whitmore

The Fresno Police Department identified 25-year-old Samuel Whitmore and 25-year-old Branden Forrest, both of Fresno, in the killing of Michael Tunnel that happened around 8:45 p.m. on Aug. 14.

Witnesses said they saw Tunnel, a tattoo artist, and two men fighting outside of a bar near Dakota and Blackstone avenues, across from Manchester Mall. One of the men stabbed Tunnel before running away. The altercation was also caught on a surveillance video.

Brandon Forrest

Tunnel died from his wounds after being transported to Community Regional Medical Center.

The two men, believed to be Whitmore and Forrest, fled the scene in a 1998 Lincoln Navigator. Police believe they were headed to the San Luis Obispo or Los Banos areas. Both men are considered armed and dangerous.

Woman Raped and Tortured for Seven Days, Murder Victim Found

FRESNO – Two suspects have been arrested in connection to a woman’s claims that she was raped and tortured while being held hostage in a house for seven days.

Margaret Jeanette Alinez

Investigators discovered a decaying body in a shallow grave in the same house, located at 2623 E. McKenzie Ave., where the woman was being held, police said.

“The male victim was dragged outside from the residence along the side of the house, which leads to a basement area, and he was taken down into the basement and he was buried in a shallow grave,” Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

The man, who police said was in his 20s, had been dead for days when his body was discovered. Officers have not said whether the woman witnessed the murder of the man.

Gilbert Anthony Nunez, 41, and Margaret Jeanette Alaniz, 23, were arrested on suspicion of murder and on several other charges.

The kidnapping victim’s week-long ordeal began on Aug. 14 when she went to the home to look for her stolen bike. Alaniz allegedly pulled her inside the house and then began beating her and eventually torturing her.

“That torture consisted of cutting the victims arms and body in multiple locations, as well as pouring what is described as a caustic chemical on various parts of her body,” Dyer said.

Both Alaniz and Nunez tortured the woman multiple times over the course of seven days. The victim was also sexually assaulted. Police believe the sexual assault and the discovery of the man’s body are related.

On Wednesday, the woman managed to escape and called the police. Officers went to the home Wednesday morning to investigate, and obtained a search warrant early Thursday. That’s when they discovered the body of the unidentified man.

Both Alaniz and Nunez have a criminal history. Alaniz was sentenced to two years in state prison for robbery, was arrested earlier this year for identity theft, and spent six months in jail in 2008 for drug possession.

Nunez has been in and out of prison since 1994 for drug charges, corporal injury on a spouse, and vehicle theft. Last October, he was convicted of burglary and drug possession.

Victims were riding their bikes when they were attacked

SALINAS—The Salinas Police have arrested 18-year old Salinas resident Christian Luna and two other juveniles on assault and robbery charges last Saturday night.

Suspects were arrested near the corner of Pearl and E. Market Street

On Saturday at 9:41 p.m., four juveniles ranging from ages 13-to-16 years of age were riding their bikes on 1st Avenue and Alma Avenue in East Salinas when a vehicle drove passed and stopped nearby.

Luna and four other juveniles ranging from ages 16 to 17 years old occupied the vehicle.  When the vehicle came to a stop Luna and two other juveniles got out of the vehicle.  As the juveniles rode passed Luna punched one of juveniles and took his bike.

The other two juveniles suspects assaulted the other victims and took their bikes as well.  The vehicle that the suspects were riding in drove a few blocks away and stopped and waited them.

The suspects reached the car, loaded the bikes and fled the scene.  The victims called the police and were able to give them a description of the vehicle.  The Salinas Police were able to broadcast a BOL (Be on the lookout) of the vehicle.

Shortly after the BOL went out, an officer with the Salinas Police Department located the vehicle that still had the bikes inside.   It was spotted about a mile and half away at the intersection of E. Market and Pearl Street.  All occupants of the vehicle were identified as the suspects in this case.

“It is not sure whether the suspects knew the victims in this incident,” Salinas Police Commander Henry Gomez stated. “ This incident is been investigated as gang related at this time.”

All three were taken into custody, Luna was transported to Monterey County Jail and booked on assault and robbery changes. The other two juveniles were booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on the same charges.

The Paso Robles police responded to two shootings over the weekend.

According to PRPD, the first incident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on the 1200 block of Corral Creek Avenue.

Police say they received numerous phone calls from residents who reported hearing gunshots.

The second shooting happened on Sunday at approximately 2:45 a.m. at the same location.

Police say there were no injuries reported and there no suspects identified.

Investigators found evidence that a small caliber firearm was shot toward an apartment that may have been occupied at the time.

Officers have been unable to locate a victim or a suspect associated with the shooting.

Police say several neighbors reported hearing four to five gunshots around 11:30 p.m. and saw a shadowy figure running from the area directly afterwards.

Neighbors also reported seeing several people run from an apartment they believe may have been the intended target.

On Sunday morning, officers returned to the apartment complex after neighbors again called and reported hearing gun fire. Officers recovered evidence that a small caliber firearm had been fired in the area.

Again, officers were unable to locate a victim or a suspect(s).  Investigators are treating the incident as gang-related.

Trial Date Set for October in Nov. 2011 Redlands Shooting

SAN BERNARDINO – An October trial date was set for a man accused of a November 2011 fatal shooting outside of a sports bar in Redlands.

Randy Ortis

Randy Ortis, 24, of San Bernardino, was accused in the shooting death of Kruze Levusi Kuaea, 22, of Calimesa, while wounding two others, when he reportedly shot them on Nov. 19, 2011. Ortis will also appear at a pretrial hearing set for Sept. 27.

Three people were shot outside Charlie Jewell’s sports bar and grill at 1 East State Street in the early morning hours of Nov. 19, a crime that was caught on a video taping system unit used by Redlands Police in several sections of the city. Tipsters came forward after police released the surveillance video. The shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. after two groups of men were seen having a verbal altercation inside the bar. Those involved in the initial fight were escorted out by security personnel, where more words and blows were exchanged which, police believe, led to the shooting. Police said Ortis was seen firing on the group of men just outside the restaurant on Orange Street. He was arrested one week after the shooting. San Bernardino police and the San Bernardino County sheriff’s SWAT team assisted in the arrest, Baker said.

Charlie Jewell's Bar, where the shooting occurred in 2011

Two other victims, Jeremy Lavanway and Jared Miller, were wounded in the shooting, but survived. When Redlands police studied the video footage, they were able to identify Ortis and his vehicle, which led to his arrest. Ortis taken into custody about 2 a.m. on Nov. 26 in the 5500 block of Bonnie St., an unincorporated area near San Bernardino’s Del Rosa neighborhood, said Redlands police spokesman Carl Baker.

Attempted burglary arrests in San Mateo

SAN MATEO – A resident on Hemlock Avenue was at home when he heard a knock at his front door at about 6 am the morning of Thursday, August 15. Before he could answer, he heard the front door knob rattling as someone tried to force open the locked door. The resident looked through a side window and seeing a young man there, demanded to know what he was doing.  The man fled.

The two teens targeted a home on Hemlock in San Mateo for burglary, but the resident called police before they could get away

The resident immediately contacted the police and within minutes, the police had arrived and had gotten a description of the suspect. Officers immediately found two young men walking away from the residence, one of whom matched the victim’s description: 19 year old Alphonso Jones, an Oakland resident.

Both Jones and Leon Watson, an 18 year old Oakland resident, were immediately arrested and booked into San Mateo County Jail for attempted burglary.

The success of this arrest was mostly due to alert witnesses, like this resident, said Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

“A quick police response and timely arrest would not have been possible without the willingness of an observant witness to call San Mateo Police Department about the crime in progress,” said Deputy Rosenblatt.

Ventura Man Arrested in Storage Freezer Homicide

Ventura – A 2 month long homicide investigation has culminated in the arrest of a Ventura resident already in custody at the Ventura County Jail. 49 year old Michael Nelson Bresnak was formally arrested on Wednesday, August 21st and charged with the felony murder of Jeffrey Korber, a missing Laguna Beach man.

Michael Nelson Bresnak

The Ventura PD identified Bresnak as the primary murder suspect on August 8th, when investigators publicly announced the June 28th discovery of Jeffrey Korber’s body which was found stashed in an operational freezer inside of a Ventura public storage unit. In an interview with KEYT news, Commander Darin Schindler stated, “In 24 years, I have never had a case like this.”

Korber’s family initially reported him as a  ’missing person’ in Laguna Beach back in June of 2011. While Laguna Beach investigators conducted and concluded a comprehensive missing person investigation in early 2012, they were unable to substantiate any signs of foul play in Korber’s disappearance.
After the discovery of Korber’s body in Ventura, detectives revealed that prior to his disappearance he had been living with and had a romantic relationship with Mary ‘Francesca’ Hannan, Michael Bresnak’s 66 year old mother. Hannan is a workers’ compensation attorney and a Ventura resident.
During the course of the investigation, detectives served search warrants at Hannan’s home and allege that she assisted her son with the storage of Korber’s corpse at the Ventura public storage facility. Investigators do not believe that Hannan currently poses a threat to the community and she has not yet been arrested or formally charged in the case. Bresnak was already in custody for a violation of his post release community supervision, which stems from a 2007 felony conviction. He is now being held at the Ventura County Jail on $650,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on September 25th.

The Marin County Arms gun shop (Photo - Facebook)

Novato police arrested 20-year-old city resident Eduardo Alvarez Friday afternoon after he assaulted two officers who responded to a vandalism call, sending one of the men to the hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police received a call at 1:04 p.m. on Friday from a local business owner, who reported that a man later identified as Alvarez had thrown a rock at him and shattered one of the front windows of his business, the Marin County Arms gun shop, which is located at the Del Prado Shopping Center on Alameda Del Prado in Novato. The Marin Independent Journal reported that Alvarez then entered the store and attempted to throw the rock at the owner, but it fell to the floor instead.

One of these men went to a hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, while the other injured officer required no medical treatment at the time.

Retail Theft Sting Nets 25 Arrests in San Bernardino, Riverside

$
0
0

SAN BERNARDINO – Police in two major Southern California cities combined efforts to battle a growing concern about organized retail theft in an August 20-21 sting operation that netted 25 arrests.

More importantly, said San Bernardino spokesman, Lt. Paul Williams, the effort not only resulted in arrests for the thefts, but also resulted in uncovering information related to illicit fencing operations. It’s a growing problem, he said.

The Price of Success - Tide detergent is in high demand for shoplifters because of it's value as tradeable of sellable item.

Detectives from the San Bernardino and Riverside police departments, in partnership with Sam’s Club, Sears, Stater Brothers, Target and Walmart, among others, combined with loss prevention agents at those stores to identify those stealing from their respective stores. Local retailers suffer significant financial losses to organized retail crime, said police. Often, stolen products are sold online or other fencing networks, including online operations.

During drug raids, said Williams, detectives often found huge caches of laundry detergent, specifically Tide, including the liquid and pod-like versions of the product. It’s often traded for drugs or sold far below retail prices at open swap meets. Sgt. Travis Walker, of the San Bernardino Police Dept., said one area supermarket chain claimed that each store reported four to six thefts of Tide every week. Each loss is reportedly between $100 to $400. Tide, said police, is easy to shoplift and difficult to trace since it does not have identifying marks, such as serial numbers. Police said Tide bottles, which retail anywhere between $15 and $18, are often sold for $5 cash or $10 worth of marijuana or crack cocaine. Other items on the retail theft hit list, said police, include beauty supplies, allergy medication, baby formula and razors.

Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz is a leader in the Inland Empire Organized Retail Crime Association

Rings often work in three-person groups, including a target, lookout and a mule, often concealing a shopping cart full of items with blankets and walk out of stores without paying for any merchandise.

In 2011, local retailers and police formed The Inland Empire Organized Retail Crime Association to showcase trends on shoplifting activities and share information about suspects. According to a similar organization, the National Retail Federation estimates rings of thieves cost businesses $30 billion annually.

In a two-day sting operation in June, Riverside and San Bernardino police covered 16 retail locations and made 38 arrests – 13 for felonies. Among those arrested included the fences that would have received the stolen goods, said police.

Mother’s Killer Brings Knife to a Gun Fight

MARIN CITY – On the 23rd of August at approximately 11 PM, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a request pertaining to an apartment home on Cole Drive, where a resident had returned to find the living room covered in blood.

Cole Road, Marin

The unidentified resident exited promptly and phoned 9-1-1 from a neighbor’s home.

Once deputies had seen the blood, they entered the apartment.

Unfortunately, their only discovery was a female victim – later identified as 44-year-old local Rosa Aldana – in a bedroom having suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite attempted CPR, she was pronounced dead on-scene.

Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol had received a report of an unidentified male covered in blood and carrying a knife at the bus stop on Donahue Street. He was then seen boarding the Golden Gate Transit Bus headed southbound on Highway 101 into San Francisco.

US Park Police intercepted the suspect as he exited the bus at Fillmore and Chestnut in San Francisco, at which point he brandished his knife and officers drew and fired their weapons. The suspect was soon transported to San Francisco General Hospital for multiple gunshot wounds.

The bloody suspect left the bus at Fillmore & Chestnut in San Francisco, where he was shot by police while wielding his knife.

Responding detectives with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office were able to surmise that said suspect, identified as 22-year-old Carlos Aldana of Marin City, was indeed responsible for stabbing Rosa Aldana – his own mother – at the apartment on Cole Drive.

The investigation is ongoing as detectives interview witnesses and family members to establish a motive.

Aldana remains under hospital guard, slated to be booked into the Marin County Jail for murder upon recovery.

Rickey Lartigue is being charged with murder for the death of a pedestrian during his DUI incident.

SAN JOSE -With the number of violent crimes increasing in the City of San Jose, the total number of homicides are on pace with last year’s total. In 2012, police reported there were more than eight people killed, with six others shot and wounded during the last two weeks of August.

San Jose’s 32nd homicide was reported just days after the arrest of 55-year-old Rickey Lartigue on Saturday, August 17th . According to San Jose Police, “The San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit arrested 55 year old Rickey Lartigue the night of the collision involving 43 year old victim Willy Umali.”

Police believe that Lartigue had pulled into a driveway and then began backing out and ran over Umali when he began walking behind his SUV. It is believed that Lartigue was under the influence of alcohol during the time of the accident. Lartigue’s record revealed that he has had six prior offenses of ‘Driving Under the Influence’.

According to SJPD Sgt. Heather Randol, “The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office has filed a murder charge based on Lartigue’s past convictions.” Randol said, “The preliminary investigation revealed that Rickey Lartigue was intoxicated and had two small children with him while operating his vehicle.”

The fatal confrontation happened outside of Tico's Tacos in San Jose

San Jose’s 33rd homicide occurred on August 24 near the Tico Tacos restaurant located at 291 North 4th Street in San Jose. A confrontation with the suspect began near the intersection of 4th Street and East Julian Street when the victim, 22-year-old Ramon Garcia, was seen on video surveillance footage setting his bike down quickly, and then turning to face the male suspect who had been chasing him on his bike. The suspect then faces Garcia and fires up to seven shots before fleeing the scene.  The video footage captured the suspect shooting Garcia and then running from the side parking lot where Garcia’s body was found.

Garcia was pronounced dead at 1:43 pm, some forty minutes after San Jose officers arrived. According to a press release by the SJPD, “the San Jose Police Department’s 9-1-1 Communications Center received a report of shots fired in the area of 3rd Street and Julian Street in Downtown San Jose.” Officers responded within minutes of the call.

Family members and friends joined together in lighting candles and signing balloons and notes in remembrance of Garcia. Mickey Guzman, who was a friend of Garcia for more than five years said, “I’m hurt.” Leticia Hernandez who is Garcia’s cousin said, “We live just a few blocks away on San Carlos Street.” Hernandez sat next to a makeshift vigil for Garcia. “I was told he was right here,” she said. “We are angry and mad that this happened to him.” Hernandez said, “everybody loved him, everybody.”

The victim Ramon Garcia's family and friends created a memorial for him at the scene.

The family held a car wash with dozens of volunteers who helped wash cars and even semi-trucks.  Company owners of the rigs also pitched in donations to help the family cover funeral costs. Another car wash is being planned for the last weekend of August near a home between North 5th Street and St. James in San Jose. Hernandez said, “We are just trying to get money together to help pay for his funeral.” A viewing at the Chapel of Flowers is expected to be held sometime next month.
