JURUPA – Police identified and arrested a suspect involved in a street race that resulted in a head on collision and two deaths.

On September 6, 2014, at 3:56 p.m. the Jurupa Valley Police Department received a call that there had been head-on collision between two vehicles. Officers arrived at the scene at Granite Hill west of Pyrite in the city of Jurupa Valley where there were several injuries. When emergency medical personnel arrived on scene, Daniel Pasillas, 17, the driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead. At this time, Jurupa Valley Station Traffic Reconstruction Team responded and assumed the investigation.

The Team closed Granite Hill between Pyrite and Pedley for approximately seven hours while they conducted the investigation. Interviewing witnesses and reconstructing the scene, investigators determined that that a Mustang and another vehicle were involved in a street race on Granite Hill. The Mustang, which was travelling westbound at high speeds, collided with an eastbound truck. The driver of the Mustang was killed instantly and the passenger was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The driver and the passenger in the truck were also injured and were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger in the Mustang succumbed to his injuries two days later. Police continued to seek the driver of the second vehicle involved in the street race and asked the public for help in identifying the second vehicle involved in the incident and the suspect who was driving. On September 10, 2014, the Jurupa Valley Police Department identified the driver of the vehicle that was engaged in a speed contest with the Mustang as Humberto Silva, 24 of Garden Grove. Silva was arrested on Thursday and booked for involuntary manslaughter.

Gardena Resident Gasses Hawthorne Officers

HAWTHORNE, CA—The fog of war appears to extend to municipal definitions of so-called assaults.

Francisco Carrillo, 38, was apprehended by Hawthorne Police Department officers on Tuesday, September 9 at approximately 9:30 a.m. along the 1000 block of Carson Street in Hawthorne, California. According to police records, the Gardena resident’s encounter was apparently so foggy that no fewer than three officers submitted accounts and were reported in the arrest records made available to the public this week.

In the first account (dated above), Carrillo was charged with five counts and one warrant: attempted robbery (A211PC), obstructing/resisting an executive order (i.e., picketing a courthouse to impeded justice: 69PC), attempted gassing (A243.9(A)PC), assault on a public officer (241(C)PC), assault on a peace officer (240PC) and a warrant issued by Hawthorne Police Department for battery on a peace officer (243(C)PC).

The cumulative bail for the charges and single warrant was $215,500.

In a second account dated September 8 at 9:10 a.m. along the 12500 block of South Hawthorne Boulevard, the same charges were applied save for the “battery on a peace officer (243(C)PC) warrant, which appears to have been redefined as a “battery against emergency personnel (243(C)(1)PC).” The total bail was set at $265,000.

A third police arrest record reflects another angle on Francisco A. Carrillo’s altercation. Dated Thursday, September 4 at approximately 10:45 a.m., the man proclaiming his occupation as “Social Security Income” was apparently arrested at the 11900 block of South Hawthorne Boulevard in Hawthorne for attempted robbery (A211PC). Bail was set at $100,000.

Hawthorne Police representatives, asked about the three arrests of one person made over the course of a week, have not responded.

RATTF comming to an area near you

Just how often does auto theft occur in the Bay Area, when teams such as RATTF are regularly paroling for stolen vehicles? You would think the number of cars stolen would be limited. However, a thief may be striking in your area as you read this.

The San Jose Police Department reports that from January to June 2014 3,895 cars were stolen, but from January to June 2013 4,456 cars were stolen, a decrease of 12.6%. Still, that is an estimated 0.047% chance of probability that any given car will be stolen today.

On May 7 of 2014 an agent with RATTF, Regional Auto Theft Task Force driving in the area of Whirlow Place in San Jose spotted a 2000 white Civic that had been reported as stolen. 25-year-old Eduardo Saucedo of San Jose was pulled over, arrested and booked for PC 496(d)/666.5, buying or receiving a stolen vehicle with a prior conviction.  Saucedo had already been jailed for a previous auto theft, and It was determined through fingerprint analysis that he was the person responsible for the theft of the Civic.

According to the Auto Task Force agent, “I saw there were fresh fingerprints on the rearview mirror of the stolen vehicle”. The agent dusted for prints and was able to make an identification card of the prints for analysis. The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office offers a latent print specialist that works directly with cases out of Santa Clara for cases under RATTF and other similar task force operations in the county.

Using their print data base they were able to identify Saucedo and informed the agent on Aug 8 that Saucedo was the person responsible for the theft. A $25,000 bail warrant was filed for the arrest of Saucedo. It was found that he was also serving a current sentence for vehicle theft out of Santa Clara County at Elmwood in Milpitas. Since then, Saucedo pleaded no contest to the charges. According to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office, Saucedo is expected to face a 3-month jail term for the theft. The next court date for sentencing and a scheduled release date will be held on Sept 22, 2014 in Dept 35 at 9:00 AM.

Another accused car thief, 42-year-old Michael Angel Bouldt, was arrested under PC 464(d)/666.5 and several other charges, ranging from felony drug possession and petty theft.

On August 22, Bouldt reportedly took a Honda Accord without the permission of the registered owner. San Jose Police Officers located the possible stolen vehicle near S. First Street and Virginia Ave. Another suspect, Miguel Moreno, was also seen next to the car trying to force down the passenger window. A witness in the area said he saw the suspect there, and that “He had asked him for a screw driver a few minutes earlier”. That is when he noticed that he was trying to force his way into the vehicle and called police. After running a report on the possible stolen vehicle, police attempted to stop the suspect who was seen leaving the area. A punch tool, suspected Heroin and keys were collected from the suspect. This is not the first time Bouldt has stolen a vehicle. Bouldt has already served a prison term for vehicle theft in Santa Clara County under Doc. CC762978. The next court date has been set for Sept 22, 2014 in Dept 35 at 9:00 AM.

They don’t come much worse than Andrew Michael Nisbet.

On Thursday, Nisbet, 32, finally came clean in a deal with Alameda County prosecutors, pleading guilty to three counts of child molestation, three counts of solicitation of murder and one count of possession of child pornography, according to Alameda County District Attorney spokeswoman Teresa Drenick.

The case goes back to December of 2013. Nisbet, a much-beloved and nationally celebrated youth golf instructor, worked at the Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore. He had also taught at courses in Alabama, Michigan, Mississippi and North Carolina. He directed the U.S. Kids Golf Bay Area Tour and was named a Top 50 Master Teacher by the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation.

According to reports, a day before Nisbet was to receive the PGA’s 2013 Junior Golf Leader Award for Northern California, police arrested him on the course as he was giving a lesson.

Nisbet was charged with 75 felony counts for molesting three teenage boys between 2007 and 2012. One of the boys was 12-years-old. Some incidents took place inside Nisbet’s car in the golf course parking lot. Others took place in his home. Others happened during out-of-town golf trips. Nisbet was said to have performed oral sex on his victims. He showed them pornography on his cellphone.

According to a report in the San Jose Mercury News, Nisbet had a way of bonding with his young students, presenting himself as a “cool coach,” giving them rides, buying them expensive golf gear. It was Nisbet’s way of picking out which students he could prey on.

Even as he sat in a Dublin jail cell, Nisbet continued his victimization. He began working out a plot to have two of his accusers murdered. He wrote letters to someone he thought might be able to help him, but a jailhouse informant tipped off a deputy. An inspector for the district attorney was sent to the jail undercover to pose as a hitman. According to an affidavit, the inspector described himself to Nisbet as a “mechanic.” Nisbet told him he had two “cars” that needed “fixing.” He told the inspector to make the murders look like robberies gone wrong.

Ten days later, officials searched Nisbet’s jail cell and found a letter with driving instructions to one victim’s home, as well as a slew of other letters between Nisbet and the informant outlining the plot.

In April of this year, the solicitation of murder charges were added to Nisbet’s already long list of charges, including lewd acts with minors, arranging sexual meetings with minors and possession of child pornography. Nisbet initially pleaded not guilty to both the molestation charges and the solicitation of murder charges.

Nisbet will be sentenced to state prison October 9 for 27 years and 4 months.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department has reportedly made the last arrest in a shooting at a hookah lounge back on July 13 that left a 20-year-old man dead, according to an official press release.

Salvador Ramon Martinez, 19, was reportedly arrested and Sacramento Sheriff’s detectives anticipate this to be the final arrest in the case. Martinez was reportedly a close friend of the shooting victim Tyrell Hall, 20, and was reportedly standing near Hall during the incident when the gunfight began. In March, 2014, an Alamo man, Dan Taylor, 72, of Alamo was struck and killed as he rode his bicycle along Putah Creek Road near Winters.

On September 10, the California Highway Patrol announced they have identified a Winters resident as a suspect in the accidental death. CHP Officer Christopher Parker announced that Adrianna Melendez, 23, “took measures to conceal the fatal traffic collision and left her home in Winters two days after the March 26 accident.” Therefore, the CHP has issued a warrant for Melendez’s arrest.

Taylor was a member of the Benicia Bike Club and a retired Air Force colonel. Just prior to his death, he was riding along a stretch of Putah Creek Road that traverses orchards east of Interstate 505. Investigators said they believe Taylor was traveling east on the two lane road alone. He was hit by a westbound vehicle that had crossed the lane divider at a speed of 55 to 60 mph. Investigators did not disclose an estimate of the speed at which Taylor was traveling at the moment of impact.

The head-on collision launched Taylor over the vehicle. He landed in soil among rows of orchard trees. The CHP reported that he was pronounced dead of multiple head and internal injuries. The vehicle that hit him left Putah Creek Road and almost hit a tree. It then returned to the road and headed west again toward Winters.

CHP has described Melendez as a Hispanic female with brown hair and brown eyes. She stands about 5-foot-3 and weighs approximately 256 pounds. Anyone with knowledge of her current location is asked to call the Solano CHP office at 707-428-2100.

Taylor was an avid cyclist and top national competitor. He was a father and grandfather and finished second in the time trial National Championships in Bend, Oregon, in September 2013.

Davis Attorney Turned Embezzler Goes To Jail, Gets Disbarred

A disbarred attorney that formerly practiced in Davis was sentenced to jail and probation for swindling $50,000 from a client, according to a September 3 announcement by the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.

The former attorney, Hal Erwin Wright, 59, allegedly embezzled money forged checks in connection with a 2010 case he’d been hired to handle by Steve Isaacson, founder of the Davis Musical Theatre Company, who was injured in a fall at a Sacramento theater. Subsequently, Isaacson had to undergo several surgical procedures to help him heal his injuries.

But Wright never filed the lawsuit. Instead, he settled the case out of court without informing Isaacson he had done so. Receiving a check for $40,000 in the settlement, Wright forged Isaacson’s name to endorse it and pocketed the entire amount for his own use, the District Attorney’s office reported.

Over the next two years, after forging the settlement check, Wright repeatedly told Isaacson that his case was proceeding through the courts. Wright even embellished his deception to the point where he sent sham demands for further information to the Isaacson. He told Isaacson the information was needed by an insurance company.

Wright also cashed for himself a check for $15,000 that had been issued to DMTC because it was named as a beneficiary in a patron’s will. Isaacson did not find out about this embezzlement until 2013 when he had another attorney.

In announcing Wright’s plea agreement, the Yolo D.A. stated that Yolo Superior Court Judge Samuel McAdam had sentenced Wright to 180 days in the county jail and three years of felony probation. Wright will have to pay restitution in an amount yet to be determined by the court.

Wright was disbarred in May and no longer can practice law in the State of California.

BAKERSFIELD — A man wanted by authorities was taken into custody after trying to use a Taser on deputies at a Motel 6 in east Bakersfield on Saturday.

Richard Romo, 31 of Bakersfield, was booked into the Kern County Jail Central Receiving Facility on charges of assault with a stun gun on a peace officer, resisting an executive officer and obstructing, delaying, and resisting a peace officer.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 10:45 a.m. on Sept. 13, when deputies responded to a Motel 6 located at 8223 East Brundage Lane in Bakersfield regarding a custody violation.
Upon their arrival, deputies found Romo, the father of a one-year old, along with the baby’s mother, all inside one of the second-floor rooms at the motel.

When deputies attempted to take Romo into custody for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for domestic violence and vandalism, he resisted. “Deputies attempted to pepper spray the suspect, which had no effect,” Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Ray Pruitt said. “One of the deputies then attempted to use his Taser on the suspect, but the suspect was able to gain control of device, which was activated in the deputy’s hand.”

After a brief struggle, with the help of assisting deputies, the deputy was able to redirect the Taser away from himself and at the suspect, who was eventually taken into custody without further incident. No one else was injured during this incident.

Woman arrested for assault tells a different story

$

SANTA ROSA – In May of this year, we published a fairly simple account of a young woman, 23-year-old Rebekah Sammet, who had been arrested by Santa Rosa Police on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. As communicated by the Santa Rosa PD in a press release, they were sent to an apartment on Tachevah Drive on reports of a stabbing. The victim, they were told, was already sent to the hospital with wounds, and the suspect had fled. As they investigated, an anonymous caller told them where the suspect was, and Sammett was soon under arrest. The name of the victim was not released at the time.

Rebekah Sammet (Facebook)

Rebekah Sammet (Facebook)

After her arrest and the story was published here, and in other news outlets, Ms. Sammet reached out to CrimeVoice to tell her side of the story. She initially posted a comment on the story, but later sent us a more detailed account of what she says happened in the incident.

According to Rebekah Sammet, she was the tenant at the Tachevah Drive apartment where the incident occurred. She says she had an extra room in the apartment because her grandmother had recently moved out. Joe and Samantha Browder, along with their 9-month-old baby, were in need of living accommodations in the area while participating in a Sonoma County work program. Sammet says she offered to let them move in with her, but for just a month, because she could not sublease the room. They moved in on May 2.

Sammet says that she welcomed the company, as she missed her 6-year-old son, who was living with another guardian at the time. She enjoyed helping care for the baby as well. However, on Thursday, May 15, there was an argument between Rebekah and Samantha Browder. Samantha wanted Rebekah to make more room for her family by moving her absent son’s things out of his room. Rebekah says she did not want to make her son to feel “moved out”, especially since the Browders were there only temporarily. The argument got heated, and the landlord heard Samantha’s raised voice, and called the police.

Samantha and Joe Browder (Facebook)

Samantha and Joe Browder (Facebook)

Police arrived to help the landlord and tenants resolve the dispute. The Browders had already paid a sum for their share of the rent, but that money was then returned with the agreement that they would move out. Rebekah says she now wanted them out right away, but the parties agreed on a 24-hour time frame for vacating. She left the apartment to attend classes. She says that when she returned, Samantha’s brother and mother were there helping pack and remove their belongings.

Sammet then described what led to the incident and her arrest. She said that while she was waiting for the family to leave, she lied down on the couch. When the rest were gone, Samantha came in and began yelling at her and punched her. Sammet says she kicked back and demanded that she leave. Samantha, however, continued to fight, and Rebekah says at that point she grabbed a pair of scissors to defend herself. She said that Samantha continued anyway, and she pulled back not intending to hurt her, but ended up leaving as small wound on her abdomen. Samantha yelled “oh, you’re going to stab me?” and then threw a punch, which Rebekah says she tried to block, and that resulted in the stab wound on her arm. As Samantha went to the bathroom to tend to her cut, Rebekah left, and said one of the Browders’ friends who was there grabbed the scissors.

Ronnie Warren (Facebook)

Ronnie Warren (Facebook)

Rebekah’s description of the following events starts with Ronnie Warren, Samantha’s brother, forcing her back into the apartment, and closing and locking the door. Rebekah yelled for Joe Browder, who had previously told her nothing would happen to her despite his wife’s temper. Warren told her to “stop screaming, no one can hear you, no one can help you.”

Samantha came back in the room and grabbed her in another attack, which resulted in them both on the ground, and Samantha biting Rebekah’s fingers, breaking the skin. Joe Browder came in, and Warren showed him the cut on Samantha’s elbow, and Rebekah heard several people yell “She stabbed Sami!”. Joe separated the women, but Rebekah was hit in the head, and at that point she was on the floor, surrounded by six people – Joe and Samantha Browder, Ronnie Warren and his mother Robin, and another couple. While down on the floor, Rebekah says she was trying to stop her fingers from bleeding, and was kicked several times while she yelled for help. She heard Ronnie Warren say “Your God can’t hear you.”

Sammet says that after that, she was held down by Ronnie Warren and Robin Warren while Samantha got on her and chocked her. The force was not hard enough for her to lose consciousness, and Rebekah continued to try to fight back. After that, however, she was let go. Robin Warren called police to report the stabbing, some helped Samantha with her stab wound, and someone likely went to check on the baby, who was in the Warren’s van in his car seat. Rebekah says she was then able to leave the apartment out the back door. She tried to talk to a neighbor but had trouble speaking, and then laid down on a lawn.

Neighbors came out to see what happened, and offered to call police. Rebekah says she said no, she did not want any of the six to see her again. One neighbor offered to walk her to the police car that had just arrived,  but she asked her to go ahead and call instead. The neighbor called to report the assault, but the dispatcher told the woman to “keep the suspect there” and asked if she had any weapons. When police arrived, she was taken into custody, despite her claims that she was the victim. She was booked for the stabbing. The call from the neighbor trying to help was the anonymous lead Santa Rosa police detailed in their report.

Sammet says that she was scheduled for her court date on Friday, May 30, but that no witnesses appeared to testify against her, and as a result the case against her was dropped. But she says the personal results of the incident are bad enough. Though her fingers healed from the laceration caused by the biting, she cannot move her neck around normally. She no longer has the home she once lived in. She said that her mother went there the next day, and found the Browders were still there, and that the landlord had asked them if they wanted to take over the lease. She believes their plan was to get her evicted and take over the apartment all along. She has moved in with her mother, but is now being denied contact with her son because of her assumed commission of a violent act.

I contacted the Santa Rosa police, but they had no further comment or information to share on this case. I also tried to reach the Browder family through social media for their comments on this story, but they did not respond.

Rebekah Sammet stated, in conclusion to our interview “I have worked very hard to overcome obstacles from my own childhood and physical injuries; to have a place of peace in my life. I had that briefly. I grew a jungle in a garden from having no plants in my yard. My home setting was like a daycare full of safe, fun, family connectedness. I had a passion for going back to the places of poverty I was from, connecting with people to give them hope that if they try, we can make it to a better standard of living. It helped many old peers. I helped many children be treated better by homeless parents. I took food, clothes, books, shoes and spent time just being there for people who needed to know they are worth my company and to not give up on life. These people took that all away with one, jealous act of violence. But I’m thankful that even without my personal effort, there are still people going to homeless parks and devoting love to those who appreciate it.”

Homicide detectives from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office have reportedly arrested a male suspect in connection to the shooting homicide of Marquelle Jones, 25, who was inside a vehicle in the Alta Arden Expressway area of Sacramento, according to an official press release.

Joe Miles, 23, was booked into the Sacramento County Jail the evening of Sunday, September 14. While a specific relationship and motive between Miles and the victim are reportedly still not clear, detectives believe this incident has no connection to testimony the victim has provided in the past. Detectives are reportedly not releasing a booking photograph of Miles due to impending furthering investigation in the case.

According to Sac Sheriff, on the evening of Tuesday, September 9, deputies received calls of a male reporting his friend has been shot while sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. The shooting victim had reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a center median near the 2000 block of Alta Arden Expressway. Deputies reportedly arrived on the scene to find the victim — later identified as Jones — inside of the vehicle near the center median, who was later pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical personnel.

Records show that Miles has been a frequent offender since he turned 18 in 2008. He has had repeated arrests over the past six years on charges for drug possession, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, assault with a firearm, street terrorism, and multiple failure to appear in court charges. He was most recently arrested in April on charges of possession of narcotics and committing a felony while on bail.

Homicide detectives are actively continuing to investigate this case and believe a second suspect is still outstanding. They ask anyone with information relating to this crime to contact the Sheriff’s Department at 916-874-5115 or Crime Alert at 916-443-HELP.

Man Drives His BMW into a Bar, Gets Arrested on Different Charge

SAN FRANCISCO—You should never drink and drive, of course, but you would think it would be safe to sit in a bar and do your drinking. Monday afternoon, about a half dozen patrons of the Comstock Saloon in North Beach discovered that isn’t always the case.

According to reports, at around 1:45 p.m., a red BMW heading south on Columbus Avenue suddenly lurched to the right as it reached Pacific Avenue, jumped the curb, and drove right through the saloon’s main entrance, injuring two customers and damaging a beautiful mahogany and redwood bar.

There were about ten people in the establishment at the time, including employees. The injured customers were taken to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Mindy Talmadge.

“It was all a split second,” said Matt Chavez, who was tending bar at the time. “We heard brakes screeching and turned our heads and saw a car coming for us. It was coming at full speed. It just destroyed the bar.”

Comstock Saloon manager Jonny Raglin told CBS SF it was Chavez’s first shift behind the bar. “He just got promoted from being a bar back. It was a real shocker for him.”

The male driver of the BWM remained on the scene and was cooperative with police, according to reports. However, a background check revealed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Sacramento County.

“We conducted a warrant check, and we determined that the driver of this vehicle is actually wanted out of Sacramento County on a $250,000 warrant for possession of marijuana for sale,” SFPD Captain David Lazar told reporters. “So he is now being placed under arrest for that warrant.”

The cause of the crash is under investigation. The driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol. The SFPD did not release the driver’s name, but an arrest log obtained by CrimeVoice.com lists him as 48-year-old Wu Huang of San Francisco.

A message posted on Comstock Saloon’s Facebook page after the crash read, “Other than a shaken up staff and physical damage to our Monkey Bar, we’re ok. We’ll rebuild and hope to be open partially sometime soon.”

Raglin built the Monkey Bar himself, according to Zagat’s, so named because of its decorative monkey figures, a nod to Abe Warner, the 19th century owner of San Francisco’s Cobweb Palace, a bar that featured a live menagerie of wild animals–including, legend has it, some rather sad-looking monkeys.

FRESNO – Three suspects are in custody following two armed robberies and a carjacking that took place within 30 minutes of each other on Sunday night in central Fresno.

The two armed robberies took place around 9:30 p.m. and 9:35 p.m. on West Clinton Avenue. Four suspects robbed two people in separate incidents and took a cell phone, headphones and clothes, according to the Fresno Police Department.

About 10 minutes later, a woman was carjacked at Palm and Dakota avenues, allegedly by the same four suspects. They drove away in the woman’s white Lexus and in the silver four-door sedan they had been riding in.

The suspects were armed with two handguns during the crimes, police said.

Officers spotted a silver sedan matching the description of the suspects’ car near Yale and Blackstone avenues. When the officers pulled up, two people ran, but they were able to catch a juvenile. They also found a 9 mm handgun and recovered property from the robberies. They also discovered the stolen Lexus across the street.

Officers then searched the area and found 20-year-old Simmie Paschal, of Sacramento, and another juvenile hiding. Paschal was arrested and booked on charges of armed robbery. The two juveniles were booked into the Fresno County Juvenile Justice Center and face carjacking, armed robbery and weapons charges.

Detectives are still looking for the last suspect.

Thousand Oaks Gang-banger Busted for Stabbing

Ventura County - It’s not often than an 18-year old has the temerity or physical wherewithal to confront a 41-year old man with physical violence, but that age difference apparently held no sway in the mindset of Jerver Munoz, 18, a resident of Thousand Oaks.

In the early evening of September 3rd, as recently reported by Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Thousand Oaks Station spokesman Sgt. Dan Hawes, a large law enforcement response team—including “patrol deputies, the Thousand Oaks Police Special Enforcement Unit and Detectives”—got word of a substantial brouhaha between opposing street gang parties within the boundaries of the City of Thousand Oaks.

When the gang fight was finally broken up, with participants scattering hither and yon, Jose Navarro, 41, also a resident of Thousand Oaks, was discovered to be suffering from “a stab wound to his abdomen”. Navarro was promptly transported by ambulance to a local area hospital where he was last reported to be in stable condition.

Some 24 hours later, on September 4th, pursuant to aggressive investigation by the Thousand Oaks Police Department Special Enforcement Unit, Jerver Munoz was identified as the primary suspect in the stabbing, and as a documented local area gang member. Early that evening, he was observed walking on a residential street within the city and was summarily arrested without incident.

Munoz was transported to Ventura County Jail where he was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with bail set at $20,000.

Alleged Lottery Ticket Thief Arrested in Visalia

VISALIA – A man who allegedly stole hundreds of lottery tickets from at least two convenience stores has been apprehended.

The first incident happened at the Valero gas station on Houston Avenue near Ben Maddox Way in Visalia. The suspect entered the store, asked for 70 lottery tickets, and then ran away with them without paying. The suspect left the scene in a Dodge Charger, police said.

Later that day, police received a call from the Kwik Stop market on South Mooney Boulevard for a report of a robbery. The clerk told officers that a man pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and demanded lottery tickets. He then left the scene in a Dodge Charger, according to authorities.

Soon afterward, patrol officers saw a Dodge Charger matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle and pulled it over. Officers detained the driver, 26-year-old Gurpreet Brar of Visalia. A search of the vehicle revealed a pellet gun designed to look like a handgun.

Police say that Brar was stealing lottery tickets and cashing them at other stores in the area. The District Attorney’s Office will likely file robbery and burglary charges against Brar, police said.

Brar might also be connected to the theft of $1,400 in lottery tickets from a market near Farmersville that occurred on Saturday. The suspect in that case was also driving a Dodge Charger. Police are also looking into a robbery at a Tulare store last Thursday in which a man stole $300 worth of lottery tickets.
