The Group Was Looking For A Party In Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ—Santa Cruz Police Department arrested four young adults after they caused a disturbance on the 1500 block of Laurent Street and assaulted a homeowner, who had taken pictures of them with her cell phone.

Arrested were 18-year-old Freedom resident Kyla Bell-Bernard, 18-year-old Soquel resident Cassie McCabe, 18-year-old Santa Cruz resident Riley Cameron and 19-year-old Santa Cruz resident Esabella Gentile-Montgomery.

Riley Cameron, the fourth one in the party.

On Saturday, August 2 around midnight, a group of young adults gathered on the street near the 1500 block of Laurent Street and began creating a disturbance. A concerned homeowner called the police and then went outside and took pictures of the group.

The group took exception to the homeowner’s actions and a physical altercation ensued. Members of the group assaulted her and took her cell phone, and at one point they tried smashing it. The victim was able to retrieve her cell phone and continued to take photos of them. The group left the area.

“The suspects hatched a plan to return to the area and take the victim’s cell phone out of fear that the photos would be used on social media.” Santa Cruz Police Deputy Chief Steve Clark wrote in a press release, “ The suspects drove back and lured the victim to their vehicle to take her phone. We believe that the cell phone was discarded into the ocean”

The disturbance and assault happened at a home in this Santa Cruz neighborhood.

One suspect had reached for the victim’s cell phone and pulled it and the victim’s arm into the vehicle. The woman fell to the ground and the driver drove away, running over the victim’s hand. She suffered a compound fracture to her hand.

Detectives worked the case over the weekend and developed leads that led to the suspects. They determined that Bernard was the driver, although the car belonged to the family of Cassie McCabe. Montgomery and Cameron all had active roles in the conspiracy to return and take the cell phone.

All suspects were arrested on August 4 for robbery and conspiracy charges. Bell-Bernard also faces an extra charge of felony hit & run. The victim is recovering from her injuries.

Three suspects from the Bay Area were recently arrested in Auburn, with a fourth suspect being sought, for reportedly stealing about $6,000 worth of baby formula and other items in a crime spree that ranged from the Bay Area to Reno, according to an official press release issued by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

Damon Yon Marcus Nash, 24, of Hayward; Charday Mariah Monique Brown, 18, of Hayward; and Torryiel Gayla Griggs, 20, of Oakland were reportedly arrested and booked into the Placer County Jail on charges of commercial burglary and conspiracy. Griggs also had a burglary warrant from Alameda County. Detectives are currently searching for the fourth suspect.

The four thieves last targeted the Bel Air Market in Auburn for baby formula and other items.

The trio targeted the Bel Air Market in Auburn for baby formula.

According to Placer County Sheriff, on Wednesday, August 20 at 6:50 pm, two women and two men reportedly entered the north Auburn Bel Air store on Highway 49, and were observed filling duffel bags with baby formula. As a store employee attempted to stop them, one male suspect reportedly ran out of the front doors with a bag of stolen merchandise, while the other suspects dumped the merchandise they had in various aisles and fled the store to a blue sedan.

Two employees chased the first male suspect, but stopped when he crossed over Highway 49. The first male suspect reportedly dropped his duffel bag of formula, which was recovered.

Placer County deputies reportedly swarmed the area, and helpful citizens pointed them to the blue sedan, which was a rental car, parked behind a building on Kemper Road directly across the highway from the store. A deputy reportedly observed the two female suspects running from the car and quickly detained them. The second male suspect reportedly ran in a different direction.

Baby formula and tequila were among the items stolen

Despite setting a perimeter and assistance from CHP air support and a K9 search, deputies were initially unable to find neither of the two male suspects. However, about two hours later, one of the male suspects — later identified as Nash — was seen walking along Highway 49 near Live Oak Lane, and was reportedly taken into custody without incident.

According to Placer County Sheriff, the suspect’s vehicle contained 160 stolen items totaling about $6,000. The majority of the stolen haul was large containers of baby formula, but detectives also reportedly found quantities of Prilosec medication, Sensodyne toothpaste, and large bottles of tequila. Detectives reportedly determined the stolen items were taken from various grocery stores from the Bay Area all the way to Reno.

Ventura County - On March 15th of this year, the body of Ashley Moran, a 21-year old resident of Santa Paula, was found hidden in the brush of a small neighborhood park in that city.

The ensuing investigation indicated that she had died from blunt force wounds to the head and repeated stabbings to her torso…and that she was in the early stages of pregnancy at the time of her violent death. Recently arrested in connection with Moran’s death was Antonio Magana.

According to Santa Paula Police Department spokesman Cdr. Ish Cordero, Magana—known to have had an off-and-on relationship with Moran—was a suspect since the initial investigation began, stating, “Magana stayed on top as one of the main persons of interest.” For his part, Magana, who was 18 at the time of Moran’s death, was a known gang affiliate who already had a child with another young woman. “it was about the longest, most complex and complicated investigation that I have ever been involved in,” Cordero said, indicating that within a week of the killing, SPPD had served multiple search warrants on three individual Santa Paula residences, “putting this case together.”

Pursuant to the evidence gathered during the investigation into Moran’s death, on August 14th Magana was observed driving down one of Santa Paula’s principal thoroughfares and was pulled over in a routine traffic stop. He was taken into custody at that time and transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on felony murder with his bail set at $500,000.

Relentless “Customer” Arrested for Stalking

VENTURA – Some guys just don’t know when to take a hint.

By all appearances, John Brophy, a 29-year old resident of Ventura, is one of those guys. As early as January of this year, a 28-year-old female complained to police that Brophy had been “harrassing her at her place of business,” according to the report filed by Ventura County Sheriff Public Information Officer, Sgt. Vincent Fazio.

At the time of that initial report, the alleged victim told patrol officers that Brophy was a frequent customer of the business where she worked, and that he had a habit of coming in to engage her in conversation. As Brophy’s interest in the woman apparently escalated, he began sending her emails and making phone calls to her place of employment and “began to express his feelings of affection toward the victim.”

As these things commonly go, Brophy then began showing up when the woman’s work shift was over and pursue her as she made her way to her car. “The victim repeatedly told the suspect to leave her alone,” Fazio reported, and even made contact with Ventura Police Detectives out of fear for her safety. It was at that time that Detectives learned Brophy had previously been convicted for stalking.

With that knowledge at hand, Detectives turned the tables on Brophy and stalked him to the victim’s workplace, where he was observed lying in wait for her. Officers made contact with him at that time, and in spite of his attempts to flee on foot, Brophy was summarily taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of stalking, possession of stolen property, and resisting an officer.

SANGER – Two men from Sanger were arrested on Thursday in connection to a shooting that happened seven years ago and left one person dead.

Police arrested 29-year-old Victor Rodriguez-Mendoza and 28-year-old Victor Estrada in connection to the murder. They were both arrested at their homes in Sanger. Police are still searching for a third man, 28-year-old Felix Rios, who is believed to have been involved in the incident.

The shooting happened on July 1, 2007. Deputies responded to the area of Annadale and Reed avenues, where they found three people with gunshot wounds. One of the victims died at the scene. The other two had wounds that were non-life threatening.

Investigators say the shooting happened during a large party that was going on in a nearby orchard. A disturbance erupted and shots were fired. All of the suspects fled before the deputies arrived at the scene.

The shooting was believed to be gang-related.

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Rios for attempted murder. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Car Thief Loses 100 mph Car Chase

Ventura County - Every now and then, law enforcement comes across someone who simply watches too many “Fast and Furious” re-runs and apparently believes that it’s actually a good idea to put pedal to metal when they see those flashing gumballs in the rearview mirror of the “ride” they’ve stolen.

All indications are that Michael Borjas, 21, a Ventura resident, is one of those guys who thinks he can outrun the cops just like they do in the movies…but on the morning of August 17th, he should have taken the time to have another thought. It was just after 8:00 in downtown Ventura when Ventura Police Patrol Officers observed a vehicle that had been reported as stolen cruising down the street. According to the VPD report to the media, “officers confirmed that the vehicle was in fact stolen,” whereupon they made an attempt to conduct a traffic stop of the car.

Borjas, the driver of the hot car, immediately made attempts to evade any contact with the officers and gunned it down a series of residential streets and through commercial districts within the City of Ventura “at dangerous speeds, running red lights and stop signs,” ultimately exceeding 100 mph and making his way into the City of Oxnard.

Because of the extremely dangerous speeds, the VPD officers pulled back from their pursuit, allowing Borjas to flee into Oxnard where…there are always more cops waiting. Not long afterward, Oxnard Police Department patrol officers discovered the vehicle abandoned as a citizen contacted Oxnard PD to report that three suspects had fled from the vehicle.

Immediate investigation and a search of the area ensued, delivering three suspects and Borjas into police custody. He was then transported to Ventura County Jail where he was booked on charges of car theft, and “driving with wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property while fleeing from pursuing officers.”

The San Jose reported the arrest of two individuals responsible for two hit-and-runs just hours apart in the area of Senter Road in San Jose.

Christopher Uchicua

Christopher Uchicua

“Traffic Investigations Unit has made an arrest in the fatal hit-and-run collision that occurred on August 17, 2104 at approximately 9:51 P.M. in the area of Senter Road and Balfour Drive” according to Sgt. Heather Randol with the San Jose Police Department. “The suspect was identified as Christopher Uchicua , 25 years old, of San Jose. Suspect Uchicua was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County Jail for felony hit and run on August 20, 2014”.

Last Sunday at approximately 9:51 PM, officers responded to the area of Senter Road and Balfour Drive on a report of a traffic collision. During the initial investigation investigators soon learned that suspect Uchicua had hit 51-year-old Son Hoang Nguyen with his car, and then had fled the scene.  Witnesses described seeing Uchicua driving a dark colored sedan when the collision occurred. Investigators believe the victim might have been riding a bicycle when he was struck. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene prior to police arrival and was not located.

The victim was transported at a local area hospital where he was pronounced deceased the next morning. The death of the 51-year-old Nguyen was San Jose’s 11th pedestrian death in 2014.

Another driver, 25-year-old Francisco Esparaza, was also arrested on the same day for felony hit and run resulting in the injury under VC 20001. On Sunday, August 17 when authorities responded to the scene of the accident, Esparza had fled. However, returning to the scene, he was taken into custody and booked by police into the Santa Clara Main Jail later that afternoon.

Davis Double Murder Case Going To Trial On Schedule, Despite Dueling Attorneys

The trial of Daniel Marsh, 17, of Davis, as an adult is set to begin on Monday August 25 in Yolo Superior Court after many delays.

The head prosecutor in the Davis double homicide case has demanded that defense attorneys be sanctioned (fined) by the court, stating that they have failed to hand over to the Yolo District Attorney’s office discovery materials as California law requires.

Assistant Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Cabral made the demand in Yolo Superior Court on August 18 during a “Trial Readiness” conference held in the court. Marsh stands accused of fatally stabbing Oliver “Chip” Northup, 87, and his wife Claudia Maupin, 76, in their Cowell Boulevard condominium last year.

Currently, the conflict between Cabral and Yolo Deputy Public Defender Ron Johnson concerns the report prepared by a defense expert witness, Dr. James Merikangas, a neurologist and psychiatrist based out of Maryland. The report, Cabral argued, “lists quite a bit of information that I do not have.” Merikangas’s report includes results of an MRI scen of Marsh’s brain, transcripts of interviews with his family and psychological records.

Judge David Reed did not order Johnson to be fined. However, he noted at the August 18 conference that he himself had not received a psychiatric evaluation of Marsh related to his changed plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. One of the reasons the trial has been delayed several times is that Marsh had changed his plea in June. Other delays have been caused by attorneys needing continuances to adequately prepare their cases.

Defense Attorney Ron Johnson did not comment on the fines proposed by Cabral.

Woman Charged in Woodland Husband Killing Case Finally Arraigned

Almost three weeks after she allegedly shot her husband to death, the woman charged with the crime finally pleaded not guilty on August 21 in Yolo Superior Court.

Susan Kathleen Hoskins’s arraignment had been delayed three times. She had requested representation by an attorney with the Yolo County Public Defender’s Office. However, a Public Defender Officer determined that Hoskins, 59, a Woodland Healthcare nurse, did not qualify for representation by a Public Defender.

Hoskins then secured the services of Shannan Dugan, a lawyer from San Francisco. Dugan made her first appearance in court on August 21, representing Hoskins at her arraignment. Dugan stood beside Hoskins in court when the accused made her not guilty plea. She also denied an enhancement for “intentional and personal discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury” on her husband Bryan Hoskins, 60.

After Hoskins’s plea was finally entered, Dugan and Deputy District Attorney Ryan Couzens argued over scheduling a preliminary hearing on the case. “Obviously, I am very new to the case,” Dugan said. She suggested she and Couzens participate in a prehearing conference before the preliminary hearing. This would give Dugan time to read all the documents related to the case. Couzens disagreed with this scenario, stating that California Penal Code requires a speedy preliminary hearing.

Yolo County Court Commissioner Janene Beronio listened as the attorneys went back and forth on the issue. Couzens pointed out several times that Hoskins’s arraignment had already been delayed; Dugan reiterated she needed more time. Finally, Beronio scheduled a prehearing conference on the case for August 27.

Hoskins remains lodged in Yolo County Jail without bail.

Police recorded Lopez’s arrest in this Hawthorne neighborhood.

That curiously named charge is described in two parts under the California Penal Code as: “647.6. For all three charges, the total bail was set at $80,000. Of that amount, the third charge, 647.6(A)PC, clocked in at just $5,000.

Dangerous Honey Oil lab discovered

LUCERNE – LAKE COUNTY – Sheriff’s deputies doing a follow up investigation on a local young woman found a honey oil lab set up in her home. Honey oil, or hash oil labs have been in the news a lot lately due to their extremely dangerous volatility, as the home made labs have a tendency to blow up or catch fire as the user tries to extract high potency concentrated cannabis from marijuana leaves using butane gas in the process.

Neighbors on 1st street may have noticed activity from drug sales at South's house over the past 2 years.

Neighbors on 1st street may have noticed activity from drug sales at South’s house over the past 2 years.

On Friday, August 15, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home of 22-year-old Jessica Louise South, in the 6000 block of 1st Street in Lucerne, a home just two blocks from the north east shore of Clear Lake. They were following up on an unrelated case involving Ms. South.

Jessica South had been arrested in October 2012 at the same home with two others, Joel Langan and Nickolas Delisle, who also resided there. Detectives had found psilocybin mushrooms, methamphetamine, marijuana, pills, and cash while serving a search warrant at the home. Langan was alleged to be selling drugs out of the home. South and Delisle were also arrested for possession of narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and cultivating marijuana, according to a story in the Lake County Record-Bee. South was also arrested earlier this year on a bench warrant related to possession of a controlled substance and providing a location to prepare or store controlled substances.

On Friday the 15th, at 9:00 am, as the deputies arrived at the house to follow up on the cases involving South, they found evidence of an active butane honey oil lab. According to Lt. Steve Brooks of the Lake Sheriff’s office, on that discovery the deputies summoned the Narcotics Task Force detectives to investigate the scene. They interviewed South and another man who was there, 38-year-old Raymond Stroud Bowman who stated his residence as Nice, a town near Lucerne on the furthest north shore of Clear Lake. She and Bowman both said that he did not live at the Lucerne house. She showed the detectives the room where the deputies had found the lab, stating that most of the property there belonged to previous tenants (Langan or Delisle, perhaps), but that some of it was Bowman’s.

Evidence seized from the house from Bowman's nightstand.

Evidence seized from the house from Bowman’s nightstand.

The room had an active BHO (butane honey oil) lab going, with a glass extraction tube filled with marijuana, and a glass dish with extracted honey oil. There were several bags of processed marijuana and “shake” – leftover material from trimming the plants. It was later weighted in at 25.8 pounds. A digital scale and extraction filters, along with a large box with cases of butane canisters were stored in the same room. All of that was seized as evidence.

As the detectives continue to discuss the matter with South, while Bowman was detained elsewhere, she told them he had brought some of his stuff to the home. She said that she and he were in a relationship, but he had not moved in. Detectives then showed her a stack of Bowman’s personal paperwork found in the room, and she then came clean. She said that Bowman had moved in, but he had insisted she not tell them, believing they would not be able search the house if a warrant on him had been issued. She also claimed she had told Bowman he could not run a honey oil lab there, a request he had apparently ignored.

Bowman also had meth and a syringe on him when searched.

Bowman also had meth and a syringe on him when searched.

Bowman, however, denied that he lived there, and had only brought some of his things to the spare room. Turning their attention to the master bedroom, reportedly shared by the couple, detectives found in a nightstand 21.3 grams of honey oil, two digital grams scales, two meth pipes and 8.5 grams of meth, .2 grams of heroin, eight LSD pills, five diazepam pills, and evidence of narcotics sales. The nightstand was said to be on Bowman’s side of the bed. There was also a small crop of marijuana growing in the backyard.

Detectives found cause to arrest Raymond Bowman, but not Jessica South. He was also found to have just over a gram of meth on him, and a hypodermic needle and a blue plastic cap with  a dried cotton ball. He was charged with manufacturing a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and controlled substances for sale, possession of ammunition by a prohibited person, cultivation of marijuana, keeping a place to sell narcotics and parole violations. He was booked at the Lake County Hill Road Correctional facility.

SAN BERNARDINO – A 31-year-old police officer, fighting for his life, was listed in grave condition after a shooting early Friday morning.

Gabriel Garcia, who was shot by a member of a criminal street gang based on nearby Redlands on Friday night. The gunman, Alex David Alvarado, 38, of San Bernardino was shot and killed while five suspects have been detained. Police arrested Johnathon Contreras, 20, as an accessory in the shooting. Orlando Cruz, 24, was also arrested for outstanding traffic warrants, said police. Three others, including two women and a man, have not yet been identified by police.

Reports are that Garcia was shot with an assault rifle during a gun battle that broke out. Garcia, along with a police trainee, came across six individuals walking near 19th St. and Garner Ave., two blocks east of Mt. Vernon Ave., according to reports. When the two officers got out of their patrol car, one individual opened fire.

The trainee, who was just out of the academy for two months, shot and killed Alvarado, who died at the scene. An AK-47 rifle and a revolver were discovered next to his body, both recovered by police. A sawed-off rifle was believed to have been used to shoot Garcia, said police. Three guns were reportedly involved.

Alvarado, who was not on probation or parole, had a significant arrest record, according to police. Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said the suspects had met earlier at a local club, had drinks, then went to the spot where the shooting eventually took place. The area is surrounded by a railroad yard and the 215 freeway.

Bullets could be heard by residents from the automatic rifle, according to reports. Witnesses told police that the shooter, Alvarado, just kept firing, refusing to get down. The trainee that returned fire was not identified by police. According to the coroner, Alvarado died at 3:47 a.m.

Garcia, who was shot once in the head according to Lt. Rich Lawhead, was eventually taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where he underwent surgery. He started with San Bernardino police in 2008, according to Lawhead. Garcia’s father, Ron Garcia, is a captain for San Bernardino PD.

BUTTONWILLOW — A 20-year-old murder suspect is behind bars after running from authorities for five years. Tadeo Saucido Rodriguez was booked into the Kern County Jail for one count of first degree murder.
He is being held without bail.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Rodriguez was wanted for the Sept. 9, 2009 murder of 50-year-old Hector Leon in the 5800 block of Panama Road in Lamont. At around 2 a.m. deputies responded to a report of a shooting , and when they arrived found Leon suffering from several shotgun wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“During the course of their investigation, detectives were able to determine that Leon and Rodriguez were involved in an argument,” Ray Pruitt, sheriff’s public information officer said. “During that argument Rodriguez shot Leon before fleeing the area.”

Later detectives were able to uncover critical information that Rodriguez had fled to Mexico after the shooting.  In August, detectives received information that Rodriguez had returned to the United States and after being tracked to the Buttonwillow area, was arrested on Aug. 21.

Redding police are rightly proud of their K9 police dog unit, which has been in place since 1965. Tarro, a 6-year-old German Shepherd, is trained in patrol duties, SWAT assistance, and narcotics detection. Tarro works with officer Ryan Ellis, a 16 year police veteran and former Marine.

Tarro’s services were put to good use Saturday night, when police were sent to a home on Royal Oaks Drive in northwest Redding in response to a burglar alarm. According to a Police Press release, the officers arrived with Tarro to check on the house. They found an unoccupied vehicle parked in the driveway, and saw that there was a sawed-off shotgun inside. They had determined that no one should have been home at the time.

As the officers prepared to enter the home, they saw a man run out the back door in an apparent attempt to escape, and possibly get into the wooded area behind the homes, potentially heading to the wild area surrounding the nearby Sacramento River. He did not get far, however, as the officers quickly captured him, without even needing to send in Tarro. He was identified as 35-year-old Redding resident Dean Michael Hagerman. Hagerman is known in some blogging circles as an enthusiast into the JFK conspiracy theories, and identifies himself as an “Alterationist”, a believer in conspiracy theories in the assassination of President Kennedy. Hagerman has a previous arrest from 2013 for disobeying a domestic relations court order, and later for failure to appear at court.

Meanwhile, officers prepared to enter the house to continue their investigation. They announced inside that anyone present should immediately surrender. When they got no response, Tarro was sent in to search. The dog had no trouble finding one more suspect, a 31-year-old man identified as Dale Allen Pierce Jr. of Redding. Pierce might be called a “frequent customer” of the Shasta County jail and law enforcement. His record shows ten arrests in 2014 alone, with charges ranging from narcotics, burglary, to property crimes and drunk diving. He was currently on “Post Release Community Supervision”, an alternative to incarceration as part of the AB109 program to reduce the burden on jails. He was even arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle just two days prior.

Hagerman and Pierce were both arrested and booked for burglary, possession of stolen property, and illegal weapons.
