SAN RAFAEL – A serial bank robber known as the Cotton Ball Bandit has been knocking over banks in Corte Madera, Greenbrae, Mill Valley, and most recently, the Redwood Credit Union at the Montecito Plaza Shopping Center in San Rafael.

In this most recent of incidents, which took place on September 4th at around 9:15 AM, he made off with an undisclosed amount of money without brandishing a weapon – nor was anyone injured.

Responding SRPD officers immediately began investigation, during which they determined from eyewitness accounts that the suspect had indeed matched the known description – white male, 40-45 years old, approximately 5’10”, slim to average build, unshaven grey stubble, and clad in a dark knit cap with ear tassels, pink t-shirt, black jacket, and raggedy black jeans.

CMPA (Central Marin Police Authority) had previously issued a press release that included photographs and a video clip which allowed witnesses to positively identify him as the Cotton Ball Bandit, known as such by his brown winter knit beanie complete with ear flaps and a “cotton ball” sewn to the top.

SRPD Investigations is diligently at work alongside the CMPA, Marin County Sheriff’s Department, and FBI to put a legal name to the man of illegal shenanigans. He is currently sought in connection with six other bank robberies throughout Marin County.

Authorities are calling for the public’s assistance in identifying the bandit, who they say should be considered armed and dangerous. If spotted, he should not be approached, rather call 9-1-1 or get in touch with law enforcement as soon as possible.

Anyone with information regarding the San Rafael robbery is encouraged to call San Rafael Police at (415) 485-3000 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477. Tips may also be left at www.bayareacrimestoppers.org or via the SRPD Silent Witness tip form at www.srpd.org/tips. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
