A San Rafael woman who had committed a litany of crimes since May 30, including check fraud, has finally been arrested and identified as Julianne Nina Bagley, age 28, according to a San Rafael Police Department press release.
Bagley’s spree began with the May 30 theft of a wallet from a woman’s purse inside a Novato grocery store and continued when she stole checks from a San Rafael home on July 3. Two days after this incident, Bagley entered a San Anselmo bank and declared her intent to open an account, using the name of the woman from whom she had stolen the wallet and a check from the San Rafael residential theft. She lost her nerve, however, and left the bank without opening the account.
On July 17, however, she successfully opened an account at West America Bank in San Rafael, assuming the identity of the Novato wallet theft victim. Five days after this, she was finally caught on camera depositing stolen checks at ATMs in both San Rafael and Mill Valley. On July 29, two San Rafael residents learned from Bank of America that the checks Bagley had deposited on July 22 were taken from their homes.
Following the release of Bagley’s photograph from the ATM deposits, a civilian called the police to identify her. A San Rafael police officer was able to identify Bagley separately. Bagley was charged with numerous counts of burglary, possession of stolen property, forgery, endorsing stolen checks, identity theft, petty theft and possession of narcotics upon her arrest.
Police are still “in the preliminary stage of the investigation” according to Corporal Justin Graham of the San Rafael Police Department, and they will continue to review evidence and be on the lookout for any other fraudulent checks or related crimes that may eventually be tied to Bagley. Officers will be following Bagley’s paper trail, Graham said, working to “trace the checks that she cashed and trace them back to their origins.” Officers could not yet be certain how large Bagley’s operation is or how many thefts she committed. As Graham put it, “As time goes on, it could end up being a few or a lot.”
