EXETER – An Exeter police sergeant is facing charges of having sex with a minor in the youth Explorer program, according to the Exeter Police Department.

Investigators with the Tulare County District Attorney’s Office, armed with an arrest warrant, took 46-year-old Jeff Detwiler into custody around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Detwiler is a patrol sergeant with the Exeter Police Department. He is a 10-year veteran on the force.
Detwiler was also an advisor for the police department’s Explorer Post. The victim was 17 when the crime occurred, according to police.
Detwiler was booked into the Tulare County Jail on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a person under 18, witness intimidation and possession of a controlled substance. His bail was set at $75,000.
Detwiler was separated from the general population because of his employment as a police officer.
Exeter Police Chief Cliff Bush released a statement saying that there is “only limited information” available on the case. The department is conducting an internal investigation.
