SAN JOSE – 30-year-old Jerry Low Thomas was arrested on July 29 for an attempted armed robbery that occurred at St. James Park near the corner of North 2nd Street and St. John Street. Thomas approached a person who was standing near the public restroom waiting for his turn, and began to brutally beat him and demand money from him.

The victim, like this man, was waiting to use the restroom when attacked by Thomas

Charges are being filed against the defendant under PC 664 in the attempt of second degree armed robbery under PC 211-212.5 (c). During Thomas’s attempt to take money from the victim, he is also being charged with PC 12022 (b) (1), for the use of a 3.5 inch black handled pocket knife during the commission of the crime.

The victim reported to officers that he was downtown doing some banking when he needed to use the outside restroom, and began to stand near the door, when he was quickly approached by the suspect. Thomas knocked the male victim to the ground and punched and kicked him in the arms and legs, while also punching him several times in the face.

SJPD officers, who were called by the victim to the scene, saw visible signs that he had been beaten by the suspect, however his wounds were non-life threatening. Believing that the suspect may still be in the area, officers took the victim near St. James Park. He and officer were able to locate a possible suspect based on the victim’s description. The victim described him as an African American male, with a black hat and Red Bull symbol in the middle, and an orange jacket with black stripes in the back. The victim said in Spanish to the officer, “Creo que es el, (I think that’s him).” Thomas was stopped and searched.

Law Enforcement presence on the scene were able to identify and capture the Thomas.

A black handled knife recognized by the victim was found on his person. While detained by SJPD Officers the suspect he began to mumble and talk incoherently, saying odd things. During Thomas’s brief court appearance he also mumbled and began saying odd things. Thomas showed little remorse for his actions as he stood before the courtroom mumbling incoherently. Thomas said, “You think I did it.” “Alright,” he said. When asked to be quiet by the district attorney he ignored them and continued to speak over the judge.

Bail was set at 200K by the Honorable Daniel Nishigaya. A Santa Clara Public Defender was also appointed on his behalf during his brief appearance despite his intention to disturb the court. The next plea hearing was scheduled for August 26 at 1:30 pm in Dept. 38 at the Superior Court in San Jose.
