SAN JOSE – San Jose police are investigating the city’s 31st homicide after unknown suspect(s) shot into a local Vietnamese bar & restaurant named Hoàng Hôn (or Sunshine). The shooting occurred near the 2800 block of Alum Rock and Pleasant Ridge Avenue sometime after 10:00 pm Monday night. Three people were injured when more than five bullets ripped through glass, walls and tables, with one bullet exiting the rear of the business through a heavy wooden door.
One patron, who was at the restaurant during the attack, stated that the restaurant hosts several different types of parties – the restaurant offers beer, alcohol, and even partitioned rooms for patrons who request lap dances from topless dancers.
When speaking with Officer Albert Morales with the SJPD about possible illegal activities he said, “If illegal activities are found to be occurring on the premises, the Vice Unit would be called in to investigate.” In that case, San Jose’s Vice Unit would be handed the case, and they would follow up on the investigation in order to determine the past history of the bar or restaurant, and follow up on incident reports related to these kinds of activities.
A follow up investigation could reveal whether possible illegal activities, including topless dancing without a permit, prostitution and/or drug sales, were occurring on the premises. Reports could also show a possible correlation to other types of crimes, such as vehicle thefts, attempted burglary, or property damage. This could warrant the closure of the business and possible prosecution by the Santa Clara District Attorney’s Office.
An individual who did not want to be identified said, “I was stunned and shocked to learn about my friend who was shot in the head. That’s why I came here.” He said, “I learned from his Facebook page that he was dead after his wife posted it online.” The victim who later died from a head wound was reported to have worked at a tech firm in Sunnyvale. Two other patrons who were also hit by the gun fire were not seriously injured. They were treated at a local hospital and released.
By late afternoon, the restaurant manager together with several workers, began the daunting chore of cleaning up the blood and trash that filled room from the night before. Others were called in to replace the door and windows revealing 5-bullet holes found in three separate sites near the front of the business. Others who work and live near the scene were still visibly shaken by the incident.
The San Jose Police Department has increased patrols in “hot spot” areas, making it less likely for gang violence to occur in known gang areas. In 2012 there were a total of 7094 violent crimes reported, with 45 of them homicides. With 31 homicides occurring this year, 2013 is seemingly making its way to becoming an increasingly violent year.
