On the night of August 12, a traffic collision resulted in Redwood City police officers arresting 48 year old Richard Slaughter for a DUI charge. He had run into two cars, injuring an occupant of one of them and suffering injuries himself. A few hours later, at the hospital where he was being treated, Slaughter told deputies that he had killed someone, said East Palo Alto Police Sgt. Tommy Phengsene. He told them that they could find a body at 45 Newell Road.
East Palo Alto officers checked out that location and found the body of a 47 year old woman, Philomena Ashford-Anderson. She had sustained multiple stab wounds to her upper torso, said , according to Detective Delbert Thomas of the EPAPD.
Anderson was a counselor at a nearby drug and alcohol rehab facility. Family members, like her sister Freda Andresson-Johnson, said that Anderson “was the baby of the family and…always happy.”
Her son, Frank Finney, said that Anderson was involved with her community and a generous person.
“She was always helping everybody,” said Dwayne Robinson, Anderson’s nephew.
Slaughter and Ashford-Anderson had been dating at the time of the death and possibly living together. This is ongoing investigation so the motive is unclear, though some media reports now list the motive as jealousy.
Slaughter was booked into the San Mateo County Jail on murder charges, along with his previous charges of DUI resulting in bodily injury and receiving or concealing stolen property (from taking the victim’s gun.)
