ATWATER – On Sunday afternoon a 61-year-old man was killed in an attack with a machete. Police were called to a report of a stabbing 1501 Valencia Way. Once there they encountered Joseph McDonald with traumatic cuts to his neck and both arms.
Although he was taken to Mercy Medical Center, McDonald died from his wounds. Police then initiated an investigation and soon discovered a machete that apparently was tossed away at the scene. A witness gave the police the name of a possible suspect. In addition, a description of the vehicle that the suspect fled in was also provided.
Less than two miles away, on the 5000 block of Crest Road, police contacted Antonio Cuz Guzman, 30. During their approach to Guzman, he would not comply and show his hands. Police deployed a Taser in order to subdue him.
Police also discovered the burgandy 1993 Chevy truck, with blood on the steering wheel. Guzman was booked into the Merced County Jail.
This is the 10th homicide in Merced County in 2013.
