SANTA MARIA – A routine traffic stop in the 700 block of East Main Street Sunday morning left one man spending the remainder of the Easter holiday behind the bars.
Police attempted to pull over Jeremy Cassaro just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, but instead of yielding to officers, the man allegedly led law enforcement officers on a high-speed pursuit through city streets, according to the Police Department.
The pursuit wove through the northeast area of Santa Maria before Cassaro, 26, struck a curb at Fessler and Suey, disabling a tire on his vehicle. Although the car only had three functional tires, Cassaro continued the pursuit at a lower speed, police said.
While traveling at only 20 mph directly behind Cassaro’s car officers allegedly observed him tossing evidence from the vehicle, which eventually came to a stop in the 100 block of North Palisade, where the suspect was taken into custody.
Cassaro was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail on charges of reckless evading, possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance and hit-and-run. He also had an outstanding felony, no bail, and a warrant for his arrest, according to police.
