SANTA MARIA – An alleged drunken driver caused a vehicle collision in a busy part of town Monday morning, sending him first to the hospital and then to jail.
Just after 10 a.m. on Monday, April 1, police officers and fire personnel responded to an injury collision in the 2000 block of South Broadway, where they found a red Chevy pick-up had crashed into another vehicle and a tree in the center median, police said.
The truck was driven by Santa Maria resident Fabian Yanez, 29, who was trapped inside the vehicle with his passenger, Armando Peralta. Both men had to be extricated from the truck by firefighters and were transported to Marian Medical Center with moderate injuries.
Police arrested Yanez on suspicion of driving under the influence and driving without a license. He was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail. Investigators also believe speed played a role in the collision, they said.
The other driver was identified as Opal Foxley, a 91-year-old Orcutt resident. She was uninjured in the collision and able to drive away from the scene, police said.
