Lodi resident, Michael Montgomery, was arrested Thursday, Sept. 26 for homicide on suspicion of stabbing and killing Jonathan Denver after a Giants v. Dodgers baseball game late Wednesday night.
Montgomery, 21, allegedly provoked his own booking after making “incriminating statements,” to the police after being detained late Wednesday night. The suspect was then arrested and booked Thursday afternoon. According to SF Weekly, another man, aged 18, was also being held but has yet to be booked. He has since been released after questioning.
The incident that led to Montgomery’s arrest occurred around 11:39 pm at Third and Harrison Streets, when two groups of men argued about the baseball game. Apparently, few of the men involved in the fight went to the actual game but the fan apparel led to the heated rival squabble.
Although starting out no differently from any other sports feud, the argument took a darker turn when the scuffle became physical. The brawl began with an exchange of words and ended with Denver bloodied by a knife. The wounded Dodger fan was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he later died.
Denver, a plumber from Fort Bragg, was reported by the San Francisco Chronicle to have taken the day off in order to spend time with his father, who is a security guard at Dodger stadium.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr stated in a press release Thursday afternoon that, “there is no place for violence,” when addressing the well known team rivalry.
Many are comparing Denver’s stabbing to the fatal beating of Bryan Stow in 2011. Stow, a Giants fan, was brutally beaten outside of Dodger stadium and died from his injuries. After hearing about Denver, the Stow family released a statement to KCAL 9 saying, “We are saddened by this senseless killing and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family.”
