FRESNO – A pedestrian was killed on Wednesday after a car hit him and took off on Fruit Avenue in central Fresno.
Police are looking for 19-year-old Maurice Fields, a validated gang member, who allegedly was the driver responsible for hitting the pedestrian and injuring two children inside the vehicle.
Police say Fields was driving a Lexus heading south on Fruit Avenue just after 5 p.m. when he struck a man in his 30s crossing the street. Police say witnesses saw the driver attempt to pass a car, but swerve to miss an oncoming car, thereby hitting the man. The Lexus then crashed into a utility pole at Fruit and University avenues.
The pedestrian was thrown through a fence into someone’s backyard from the impact. Two children were apparently inside the Lexus at the time of the crash. Fields allegedly fled the scene with a 7-year-old boy, but left a 9-year-old child pinned in the front seat of the vehicle, authorities said.
Firefighters responding to the scene were able to pull the boy out of the car.
He was “was extracted after about 30 minutes and was transported by ambulance” to the hospital, said Fresno Fire Department spokesperson Koby Johns.
The child is in serious condition, but expected to survive. The younger boy was later dropped off at the hospital by someone for a minor forehead injury. Police have not revealed the relationship between Fields and the two children.
Fields is expected to be charged with felony hit-and-fun when he is found and arrested, police said. Anyone with information as to his whereabouts is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 498-STOP.
