Stolen iPads and other property were recovered from a thief’s home when police used an app on a victim’s iPad to track it down.
Mario Pineda Zaragoza apparently didn't know the items he stole could help track him down
On September 17, a woman in her 20’s and a Palo Alto resident reported a burglary between 10 am and 7:45 pm. The thief had cut a window screen to an open bedroom window and stole two iPads, a laptop computer, a digital camera, and jewelry.
Using the “Find My iPhone” application on one of her iPad’s, police were able to trace it to a San Jose home, according Sergeant Kara Apple of the Palo Alto Police Department.
Detectives arrived at the home of 48 year old Mario Pineda Zaragoza, and found the stolen iPad. Police also found other stolen goods, including a laptop stolen in an auto burglary in Milpitas, and another laptop stolen from a residence in San Jose. Other than the two iPads, the rest of the property of the Palo Alto burglary was not recovered. All other items were returned to their owners.
Zaragoza was also in possession of several pills of oxycodone and hydrocodone without a prescription, said Sgt. Apple. Zaragoza was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for four felonies: residential burglary, two counts of possession of stolen property, and possession for sales of a controlled substance.
Sgt. Apple credits the Find My iPhone app with the capture of the suspect. The PAPD encourages people to enable such security features in all of their portable electronic devices.
