UKIAH – On September 8th at around 12:30 a.m., an agency assistance call from the California Highway Patrol saw deputies paying a visit to the Testa Vineyards parking lot at 6400 North State Street, where folks had reportedly been giving drunken golf cart rides to a parking lot in downtown Calpella.
The first deputy to arrive was immediately confronted by an intoxicated and highly belligerent Clyde Martinson (48), who forcibly insisted that he leave immediately. It was then that another golf cart breezed through the parking lot and crashed, briefly drawing the deputy’s attention away from Martinson who then threw a beer can at him and began shoving him, still drunkenly demanding him to go away.
The increasingly frenzied crowd prompted the deputy to call for additional units. Meanwhile Martinson was forced to the ground and restrained by crowd members.
Additional deputies along with officers from Ukiah PD, California Highway Patrol, and Coyote Valley Tribal Police all responded in an effort to cool things down. Somewhere in the midst of all the madness, someone had even stolen an ignition key from one of the patrol vehicles. Fortunately, it was later recovered and returned.
Another highlight of the evening included 49-year-old James Thompson approaching officers in an abrasive and standoffish manner, obviously intoxicated and looking for trouble. He was promptly arrested for it and placed into the backseat of a patrol car while officers continued to dissuade the crowd.
Clyde Martinson, who by now was still being restrained, was then approached and taken into custody, during which time he physically resisted and earned himself an additional charge on that account.
But someone had other plans for James Thompson, as it was discovered he’d been sprung from the patrol car that had held him while officers were dealing with Martinson. A search proved unsuccessful and only Martinson was taken in and booked.
Later that day at around 10:30 a.m., Thompson showed up to the Sheriff’s Office in Ukiah with several wrist injuries – his handcuffs appeared to have been cut off – and turned himself in. An anonymous tip later identified 59-year-old Charlene Testa as the one responsible for his escape, to which she then admitted after being contacted and interviewed by authorities.
The case remains under investigation and has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review of the charges – and to the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for review of possible sanctions against the liquor license holder of Testa Vineyards.
